Welcome to dGeek.com...or davidhewlett.com... or adogsbreakfastmovie.com or whatever it is we’re calling this wonderful, strange online world this week!
In a nutshell:
I was working on a show...a show called Stargate Atlantis (I’d previously done a couple of episodes as the same character...Doctor Rodney Mckay...on Stargate SG-1 ).
I wanted to make a movie...a funny little movie called A Dog's Breakfast . I wanted it to be reminiscent of films I love, like A Fish Called Wanda or old fashioned comedy classics like Arsenic and Old Lace and The original Pink Panther Films .
I funded the film myself...along with a few kind souls decided to pitch in as well...not to mention the cast and crew who worked for nothing (actually it was for deferred fees and I'll get to that in a second!) and all the local Vancouver companies that donated their valuable resources and equipment Still, we hardly had enough money to finish the movie, let alone pay a publicist! So I created adogsbreakfastmovie.com (this site) to promote it. The site has become a thriving online community...one that we’re hoping you’ll be able to enjoy for many years to come!
But a funny thing happened when I started telling people about what we were up to. People started to help...lots of people...people we didn’t even know! They designed banners for us, they helped organize screenings and started posting comments, reviews and raves on websites all over the world about A Dog's Breakfast . But they didn’t just stop there! They designed t-shirts and posters that they wore and posted in the real world in order help get the film some attention. I dubbed the movement “Squirrel Marketing” because it was small, nimble and nuts!
Thanks in large part to the amazing online response, A Dog's Breakfast was picked up by MGM. But that turned out to be just the beginning! The job now is to make enough money that the film goes into profit. Once that happens we start getting sent checks. Checks that we can slice up and send of to all those wonderful souls that made the film possible. This is really important to us, everyone deferred their wages and I want them to see something for their efforts (other than just a great movie that is!) MGM has huge overhead...it's hard going trying to get out of the red on this film. But, please, if you enjoy this site, please think about picking up a few copies of the DVD for friends and family!
While this is a good place to be if you’re looking for information about me, David Hewlett, my dream is for the community to grow into something more than just an online resume...quite what that will be remains to be seen! I'm hoping that my 25 odd years (no, odd is a good word for it!) as an actor, and my work now as a writer and director may be of some interest to people. I would like to welcome any kindred spirits out there... filmmakers, actors, screenwriters with projects of their own to develop, promote or just get some feedback on. I would like this to be a destination where people can share their work and start building an audience. And most importantly I would like it to be a community that helps organizations like Doctors Without Borders.
We’re in the middle of considerable change around here, but please don’t let that stop you from enjoying this amazing online community. In fact... you’ve arrived at the perfect time to shape the future of dGeek.com!
Enjoy,
David Hewlett
