Moderately Moderating Moderators PDF Print E-mail

Greetings all,

Just trying to get my head around the moderator side of things.  How does this sound, as a start, for a list of responsibilities?

1.  Help out “new-letts” and make them feel wanted.

2.  Kill inappropriate postings dead...spam or stupidity (within reason...I'm not always that bright either, remember!)

3.  Report spammers, crazies and those who don’t wash enough (except me...if I don’t wash enough)

4.  Categorize and organize posts, moving them as necessary.

5.  Come up with some good guidelines for forum usage (All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others perhaps? ;-))

6.  Help me put together an FAQ

7.  Provide me periodically with a list of hot topics or questions so I’m not a clueless idiot (or less of one anyway)

8.  Help determine where dGeek.com is headed.  I would love to find a niche for this baby, preferably something to do with filmmaking, writing, acting etc.

9.  NOT be a psycho on the boards or in correspondence with me...seriously, this needs to be business-like and not weird!

10. Make sure that lists like this one end on an even number ;-)

If you're interested in submitting yourself or some other poor soul I'm at adminime at adogsbreakfastmovie.com (obviously lose the spaces and replace the at with @...and if you couldn't figure that out you may want to reconsider your submission) ;-)

***UPDATE: I've had to delete the adminime email address as I was just getting a ton of spam emails...thanks for your inquiries though!

I have never moderated anything before but should I wish to, I would not find any of these duties particularly heinous.

There are a few Squirrels on here that would be perfect as Mods. We should put it to a voting and nominate system. I know Katherine, and Barcardicider would be great as well as a few others. Who there names escape me right now.

Sounds Good
written by KimberlyFDR, July 27, 2009
I got my application in early this afternoon, but I just wanted to say that this starting list sounds perfectly reasonable to me. A little more guidelines for the forum and some easy to access FAQs would go a long way in paving the road towards a solid future forum experience.

10. Make sure that lists like this one end on an even number ;-)

I think it sounds like a really good start for some responsibilities. Overall, they target what a moderator really should be doing when it comes to a forum. And I really like the idea of sending you questions and hot topics so you can keep up to date as well.

As for where dGeek.com is headed, I'd love to see it in with the whole filmmaking/writing side of things. But then, I'm biased considering I'm finishing off my fourth year bachelors in a writing program. smilies/wink.gif Still, if that's the way it goes I'd be more than happy to put my degree to some sort of use if need be. I mean, I'm paying for this education and should probably use it at some point.

Alas, I wish I would help, but, as much as dgeek rocks, I'll be at University this fall and I fear that being a moderator would cut into my study time smilies/sad.gif I wish I could help out though; I know I'd be wicked good at it (I've done work like it before.) I know, what with all the fantastic people on the forums, you'll find someone(s) very good at the job. I think those things are quite reasonable, and are issues that many squirrels have been asking to be addressed. Please remember that there is an established community here at dGeek. A few have been around since the site was started. Many of us just have concerns about someone with no knowledge about us being put in charge of the site. Unlike many other forums, people on dGeek have actually gotten to know each other in real life, so we tend to be very open with each other. And there are people already familiar with the community who would be qualified to serve as moderators and administrators; it's not just a popularity thing. So I believe at least one or two of these positions should be filled by someone from the site.

That all seems reasonable to me. I do agree with Ava that some of the long time members of the site should, if they are willing, be involved as moderators. Also, might be worth considering having moderators from different time zones as the site is populated by Squirrels the world over and as used 24/7. That way problems could be caught as soon as possible.

That said, I appreciate you giving us a say in what happens to what is, after all, your site! You are a gem! smilies/smiley.gif

lets see I am tempted to throw my hat in the ring. I have moderated and helped set up 2 boards (using invision free admittedly)

I am currently completely unemployed with time to massively kill, I have various resources for computing stuff.

I just would much rather know that the members of this board would be happy with me moderating than to be plunged directly into it. Therefore I second the idea of voting by the general populace.

*sigh* And it was eloquent too.

The gist of my post was, being a mod for another fairly big fan based site, these are quite reasonable qualities to look for in admins/mods. I would suggest that you have more than one mod and in different time zones so that someone can be accessible 24/7.

I also had commented that it was quite ironic that this post got spammed.

David, thanks for keeping the board up. We all truly appreciate it.

Help out “new-letts” and make them feel wanted.

I've only ever seen welcoming from Squirrels. If I hear otherwise, I'm going to gnaw on someone. :p

Come up with some good guidelines for forum usage

There was a thread in the forum at one point, where many of us discussed what good guidelines would be and what would make for good moderators and who they might be. If that can be pulled up it might help. The discussion came up in the wake of the only flaming thread I've ever seen on the forum.

Help me put together an FAQ

Doable. Most of the questions would come directly from the forums. I'm thinking there might be copyright issues. Ah, but the Terms of Usage should take care of that.

Provide me periodically with a list of hot topics or questions so I’m not a
clueless idiot

Were you thinking of having an "Ask David" thread? Or more along the lines of being kept apprised of questions in threads that you might feel you want to respond to?

Help determine where dGeek.com is headed. I would love to find a niche for this
baby, preferably something to do with filmmaking, writing, acting etc.

Those sound like some pretty good objectives (and thoughts), you have obviously gotten your business head on already. I've put in my ap already but can imagine you are going to be seriously overwhelmed! You'll have to employ yourself a recruitment consultant!

Regarding voting mentioned in the some of the other comments thought it might be worth throwing in that modding very often has the effect of making certain people unhappy. Perhaps a popularity contest isn't exactly the best way to go.

Hope it doesn't give you too much of a headache David!

Have you thought about maybe having more than one moderator? I'm a member on a forum that has different moderators for different threads, that way no one gets an overly large task.

You know, Spammers could at LEAST try t ohave decent grammar and make things look legit if they want to try to suck people in ... Otherwise they're just criminally annoying.

There's an idea ... Make it illegal. Charge the people with whatever severely unrealistic amount of money they're claiming is available. I mean come on, $17.200.000.00Million USD?? Seriously? Who in their right mind would even consider this to be a real deal? I say charge these people what they're saying they have and see how many spammers we get ...

I love the idea that you're willing to keep this going, that you have a direction in mind and, of course, that you remembered the most important item: Lists always ending in an even number. *g* I think that are tons of us who could help and you can expect about a gazillion (is that an even number?) hats to be tossed into the ring. Here's mine *g* (It's a fedora, btw):

Mailing lists and communities I created and moderate/moderated:

1. On Yahoo, I have a mailing list called SGtoCascade, a discussion group for fans of Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG1 and The Sentinel.

On Live Journal, I have:

2. A charity community called GMFORMOONRIDGE (I run an online auction each year for the Moonridge Animal Park) at: http://gmfor-moonridge.livejournal.com/

3. A community called PicSpam2009 that encourages folks to get out at least once a week to enjoy their city via photography at:
http://community.livejournal.com/picspamyou_2009/

4. I used to moderate a community called SGtoCascadeIcons (but let's face it - there are tons of them so I let that one go)

5. I have my own Fiction only Community on LJ and, to ensure that I end up with an even number *g*

6. I have a blog for my struggling business of photo restorations at: http://www.msphotofixonline.com/

I designed all of them, am a strong believer in FAQ that have 10 rules/questions/answers or less (and always end with an even number), and am home all day with plenty of time. I also used to have to come up with questions for guests at summer conferences just in case the audience went dumb on us *g* (this was when I was working as a general manager for 3rd largest whatever).

David,

Great list of responsibilities. I think most everyone on dGeek does #1...we have a very welcoming crew. The more Squirrels the merrier. An official welcome would be nice too.

#2 - #6 are spot on as far as I can see...many on dGeek have expressed a desire for a moderator(s) to handle those things.

I agree with the above posters that said maybe there should be 2 or more moderators. The forum has gotten quite big and it would take one person a really long time to go through old threads and organize and archive (or delete?) threads that have been dead for awhile. And then for them to welcome newbies, moderate current threads etc...it would be a monumental task. Also if you have some in different time zones they would be able to moderate pretty much 24/7. And, 2 heads ARE better than one(as someone said)...in fact 3, 4 or 5 could really help each other decide how to organize things, or how someone breaking the rules should be handled. And, that would cover some time zones too. We have a lot of Squirrels in the US/Canada, UK/Europe(sorry to lump you all together) and Australia/NZ. So maybe 2 in US/Canada, 2 in UK/Europe and 1 in Australia/NZ that would cover most of the time zones around the clock.

#7 & #8 would really help you move forward with the main pages(non-forum pages) of dGeek. It's your baby so it should be all about the Hewlett. It would be nice to have a page covering your upcoming work(things you've finished that haven't aired)...things you are thinking about/working on(Design of the Dead etc) and ADB should get it's own page in my opinion. ;o) If you had some help with that it would let you worry about your career and take the pressure of managing the day to day work of a website off your back. While still allowing you as much control as you had time for.

#9 Psycho's. We've had a few on dGeek and dealt with them pretty well so far. But you definitely would have to vet the people you would have working for you. If they don't work out and are not being professional you can always let them go. I guess no one likes to think about having to do that though. If you give them rules they need to abide by to keep their modding 'job' hopefully if you pick carefully it won't be a problem.

#10 I have no problem with this...lol. I love evenses too. Although I am partial to the number 7 which is odd. (in more ways than one) ;o)

I wish you luck in wading through all the emails. I submitted a quick one before I took off on vacation today. Now I'm thinking it was very quick and off the cuff and not very professional. smilies/shocked.gif( Maybe when I have more time I will send another? Although I hate to give you another email to wade through.

Sincerely,
Kimberly

The list of ten sounds great!

And I'm all about making lists even numbered or I'll settle for multiples of 5. I'm much like Monk in that way.

As for showering, I was told my computer has a smell filter. It works well because I can't tell who's showered or not. smilies/wink.gif

As many other squirrels have brought up, I think voting on moderators would be good and also having more than one moderator would be wise.

Yes, moderators sounds like an excellent idea especially since you seem to have quite enough irons in the fire. I like the voting idea and I agree that it should be someone that has been on the forum for awhile and knows the atmosphere and won't go all "I RULE" on everyone.
