Growing Pains! PDF Print E-mail

Hello again!

Just wanted to warn you that today we'll probably get migrated to the latest version of Joomla (one that won't be such an easy target I'm hoping). I'm just not sure which of my lovingly added add-ons are going to function with the new script and what's going to implode after all this so... thanks for your continued patience. We have over 3500 members now and all the comments and forum postings that go with that so, fingers crossed and prepare for a bumpy ride!

Cheers,

D!

I really do wish I was Rodney McKay this weekend...he'd have this sorted out and be kicking some script kiddie's bottom by now! Me, I'm racked with nerves and anger and guilt at not keeping up-to-date on the updates and Joomla warnings and all those horrible black hat things that go bump in the night!

In case you didn't notice. The site was hacked this week, by what looks like a Joomla (or third party add-on) exploit and some kind of a scanning program that looks for these kind of weaknesses. I've restored the site from backup (sorry, we lost about a week of your brilliant posts, which really *&^*&%^ me off!?) and I am in the process of having it updated to the latest and greatest most bullet-proofest version available, in the hopes of fortifying it before we get hit again.

Sadly it seems that I am not alone in my defenseless ways, even genius old time Joomla people are getting hit by this thing. I'll admit, I did used to love exploring the old BBS's then networks and then the Internet and certainly found myself (thanks to lots of reading of manuals and a few dog-eared 2600 magazines) where I "technically" wasn't supposed to be - but I NEVER touched a thing! That's not the hacker way! What joy is there in running a program that just automatically screws people you don't even know? Sorry, but I see no glory in that. Does that make me old? I suppose it does.

Here's the plan. I intend on getting the site secured (as well as can be I suppose) but then it is decision time. I'm thinking about moving to an easier setup (possibly WordPress) but I really don't want to leave everyone in the lurch. The forums are a big exploitable problem and as I haven't even got around to moderation on them...it may be something that I'll have to leave to someone else, I even wondered if I should see if the Gateworld crowd could hook me up with a forum or two. What are your thoughts and suggestions?

Brainstorm is complete except for one day in the freezer with Jewel and a large axe (don't ask!). I'm sad to see the episode go as it was a real high point for season five and (more importantly) to my life as a nerd. I really hope Baz goes into the sciences, it's such a pleasure to be around and work with such intelligent life!

Lots of love

D!

Cover me Baz!
Cover me Baz!
Greetings all!

I've been trying to keep those of you who still care up to date with Twitter...I'm finding that the little byte sized bits about my days are a little easier to get to than the full on posts...and I can do them from my phone...I never seem to get further that logging into administration here at dGeek.com...I would apologize, but I'm just not that nice a person...and I've been having too much fun!

We're back up and running on Season Five...thanks for some solid viewing numbers for episode 1...it's been reported at 1.3, but I'm told it was actually 1.35 which is nothing to sneeze at - which I'm doing a lot of today as we've been blowing things up and those explosives always get right up my nose! Given how many of you had already seen "Search and Rescue" online when I met you in London or Baltimore I'm amazed we even got those numbers...so thanks for watching even if you'd already seen it out here in cyberspace...all fuel for the Season 6 fire! We've also been goofing around with these wicked little remote control racing cars! Joe and I have done some serious damage to the sets as we careened around between setups. Strangely enough, they still won't let us handle the driving in the scenes though?!

I have to get an iPhone...Flannididdy is driving me crazy with that thing. I've got so much techo-envy I'm convinced it's beginning to effect my performance. I think for the sake of Atlantis I'll have to shell out for the 3G in the next week or so...it's a selfless act as you can imagine!

One month off and I return a ring wearing married man! Best decision I've ever made, probably the worst for Jane ;-) The wedding was incredible and after months of planning (and spending) it went off without a hitch. Jane, as always, not only pulled off all logistics from another country, she managed to look fantastic doing it. She looked incredible! I forgot to do my hair (a fashion disaster) and Baz pulled his diaper off just before Jane headed down the aisle so her first attempt had to be quickly aborted until the half naked Hewlett (Sebastian that is) was ready for prime time. The Warwick Castle event was like something out of a fairy tale. I know that Getty images has a number of the "classic" wedding poses, but I'll see if we can't dig up some of the more candid shots for you to look at...they are fabulous...as was the whole thing...I can think of no better way to celebrate the rest of my life with, my wife, the extraordinary Jane :-)

Baz is mobile and crawls faster than I can sip soy lattes so I'm constantly on guard for pint sized perils. He's also taken to "cruising" from one upward position to another. A process (for those of you who haven't experience the constant terror of the under twos) that sees him traverse the property via sofa, table and anything just above eye-level...including the now permanently disgruntled Mars.

Thanks to all of you for your kind dGeek design and organizational concepts. They are all percolating in my post holiday brain and should hopefully result in some kind of tweaking in the not too distant future. My big question now is what to do with the forum? I have, up until now, avoided moderating them, but I think it may make sense to have a few of the boards patrolled by more experienced dGeeks...what are your thoughts?...any suggestions on this?

Peace love and biscuits!

D!
