Shameless Self Promoting FYI!

Okay, here is my evil scheme behind the IMDB - Wrapper at the bottom of the left hand side of the website. By creating a "window" into IMDB.com, specifically http://imdb.com/title/tt0796314/ (A Dog's Breakfast on IMDB.COM) I'm hoping that the traffic generated by everyone's day-to-day use of adogsbreakfastmovie.com will rack up hits to the movie's page on IMDB and thus its IMDB ranking.

Let me know if this causes any grief on your end and I'll get rid of it. I was going to just make it so small that it was invisible. But then you get all the hassles of loading another page and you can't even use it! What I'd like to do, if I could just figure out these wretched "templates" is to have it nicely placed right along the bottom of each page in a more usable format. In the mean time I'm afraid that this will just have to do.

By the way, if any of you have websites or blogs that you can add the http://imdb.com/title/tt0796314/ link to, that would help greatly as well! You can also sign your website or blog up to Technorati.com and that'll help get us all some attention as well!

Thanks and warm fuzzy nerd-love,

D!

Written by meljbuck Also viewing in Safari this very window the latest news items are down below the wrapper in orange/red on the red background... eek!

Huh, I didn't even see the items under the wrapper, the text blended in so well with the background. Good eye! With these new templates, I've been getting the same effect when I preview a post on the message board. I have to highlight the text to see what it is. I use IE on a PC.
Pop Ups
Written by meljbuck on 2007-02-23 04:05:11
Could this wrapper be causing pop ups. Because I keep getting them and I didn't before. Also viewing in Safari this very window the latest news items are down below the wrapper in orange/red on the red background... eek!

Where did the IMDB thingy go? Guess I'll just have to click thru to IMDB directly.
Oooh almost!
Written by 11nine73 on 2007-02-20 16:00:15
David, is that in an iFrame?

Whatever, you need to place it before the footer (is probably something like '$footer' in the code)?

And make it smaller, or it'll throw out your layoit again.

All you tech-savvy people. *sheesh*

Where's that cup holder again?

Can you explain that again?
Written by watcher652 on 2007-02-19 14:15:02
I'm confused. Does having the IMDB wrapper on the ADB site mean every time we go to an ADB page, it ups the IMDB count? Each individual ADB page visit is a separate hit count, right?

My shortcut to IMDB is the ADB entry. It used to be the David Hewlett entry when I didn't know that it made any difference but I had it as my initial IMDB page, just in case.

In the promotion dept, I'd like to suggest a flyer geared to the scifi community. I went to a scifi convention this weekend and papered the walls with the flyer (yes, I took them down at the end of the con). People showed more interest when I verbally told them it was a David Hewlett project. But I couldn't talk to everyone. If you want to be shameless, you need to leverage your name. Another version of your generic flyer should have that sweet story about Mars being rescued. Lots of people liked that story when I told it.
Oops. Never Mind.

Apparently, I'd clicked on the home page link when I went to look. It's loading the ADB page.

Now. Where did I put that caffeine?
Okay. Feeling dumb

I'm with Catsitter. Huh?

I see IMDB in that little window down there. It's not opening to the ADB page, though. It's on the main page.

However, it doesn't appear to be causing me any problems. (I'm on XP-Home and Firefox.) So if my sitting around and doing nothing but visiting your page helps? Nifty.

If I'm supposed to be doing something more (outside adding code to my non-existent web pages), then please provide more detail, oh Great Squirrel King!

I'm sure it's a great idea, but unfortunately I have no idea what this is all about. Except IMDB. I do know what that is. I feel like Jack O'Neill!
Cool Idea This ....

... nothing wrong with self promotion - if you don't do it yourself who else will (oh yeah ... right ... we will of course ;) ). Anyhoo I had spent a couple of (by which I mean several) hours happily poking around IMDB before I read your post ... now I see your grand design and have added appropriate code to my WEB site. Ann March Watercolours
An Art site I know and one I coded 11 years ago (God I feel old) in good ole HTML before all these newfangled flashy web toys existed - but it all still works (I think), and - hey - every little helps right??
Hope you are feeling better - the flu plague has hit our house now - lying low my very own David (but not me - Yay!)
Peace and happy coding

Oops. html code disappeared from my previous post. hmmm...

Trying again. Replace {} with ""

Idea for "hidden" but usable IMDB wrapper.
{a target="_blank" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0796314/"}
A Dog's Breakfast{br}
{img src="http://i.imdb.com/images/nb15/logo.gif" border="0"}{br}
{iframe
src="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0796314/"
width="177"
height="1"
scrolling="no"
align="top"
frameborder="1"
class="wrapper"}
{/a}

This displays an IMDB logo on the page, with the "wrapper" disguised as a decorative line under the logo. You can, of course, change the size of the wrapper so it's totally invisible. Clicking the logo opens a new window/tab on the IMDB A Dog's Breakfast page.

You naughty boy you! *is in hysterics*

I'm really not sure this allowed but what the hey!

It is slowing me down but I guess that's what I get for having a 10 year old PC. :roll

So opening the "ADB" IMDB page would help the movie too, right? *Adds that page among the ones to visit at least daily*

Forgot to say that Bert the Cylon is now recommending ADB and has the right links, though Bert is confused by the use of a Rubber Duck...

We like the sneaky, geekiness. All hail king squirrel... okay maybe I shouldn't have just eaten that chocolate biscuit - sugar high!
Will do, but...
Written by Aten on 2007-02-16 22:33:40
...May I be the first to say that yes, it's messing with my computer. My connection is shaky as it is (damn RoadRunner...), and loading another page simultaneously really isn't helping it along. I'm certainly all for shameless self-promotion, to be sure, but things don't want to work on my end of the cable (seriously, it took me ages just to load that "rogue squirrel" article in the previous entry).

Caffiene, Squirrels, and Coding
Written by windshieldbug on 2007-02-16 18:58:53
THis squirrel has had too much caffiene, which means I'm yodaish. Which means I can't think coding. I'm gonna get the wrapper coding for Blogger from S_auruis!

No grief for me DAvid. Working on coding for myspace!
clever

[strokes chin - theres no goatee (thankfully), and so some of the effect is lost, unfortunately]

how very clever of you. i'll add the link to my LJ, right below the link to the ADB site, :D
Written by zwild1 on 2007-02-16 18:40:07
I'm in the middle of coding my website so I'll just add the IMDB wrapper as well. That is once I get my own coding demons tamed. Gah!!!

Baha, I guess I can't use BBcode in the comments, then. :grin

You are such a clever king squirrel! I'll add the link to my webbie and anywhere else I happen to wander.
Written by dutch eowyn on 2007-02-16 17:07:49
Hahahaha!! Shameless selfpromoting and flaunting your IMDb pro subscription (in referrence to the Departed link ;) ) and every time I visit your site, something has changed! I can almost hear you muttering 'Now if I just... whoops! Ok, so if I tweak this here, that should do the trick. There you go!'

You still take some time every now and then to curl up by the fire, right?

Written by Arlessiar on 2007-02-16 16:55:31
Ah, thanks for the explanation, I was already wondering why this imdb thing showed up on every page. Wondered if it's a new add, didn't think about the ADB page on imdb. *silly me* :grin
Written by Squonk on 2007-02-16 16:54:44
Nowt wrong with shameless self promotion, it's a great idea. If i had any blogs/sites/technical know-how, i would certainly add it! lol.

Now that's three updates in one day, shouldn't you be resting? - Not that i'm complaining of course!

No grief at all!
Self-promotion seems perfectly reasonabl
Written by crazymom on 2007-02-16 16:45:27
Ah, yes, self-promotion. The kiddo has to write some poems for school, and I suggested he write one about me. After all, surely there are several poems worth of weirdness in me? He just keeps rolling his eyes and ignoring me. I really need to clean up my main webpage anyway, and I can certainly add IMDb/ADB to my blurbs for the perils of husband-wife remodeling, the Miss ADD pageant rules, and the CSI:Miami Drinking Game. Then again, are you sure you want me to do that?
IMDB WOOHOO!
Written by teknikal on 2007-02-16 16:35:49
