Scorsese has this amazing ability to make you care about everybody in his films, no matter how dark and twisted and evil they may be. Leo DiCaprio's performance is flawless (I would say as usual, the talented little bastard!) Matt Damon is equally brilliant (and I think underrated). Jack Nicholson does what he does with a wonderful style and over-the-top grace. But, I always find it hard to think of him as anything but "Jack". The story is rivetting and kept us on the edge of our seats the whole time. I will admit to yelling warnings to the characters on screen, a number of times. The film has the usual Scorcese ultra-violence, but it never felt gratiuitous.

Winner! Written by watcher652 on 2007-02-26 00:03:05 "The Departed" won best picture and Martin Scorsese won for best director. Points to you for recommending the movie. |

The "DOGS" blog Written by taywolf on 2007-02-19 12:41:28 This blog belongs to Mars. Where is HIS update? He should be telling us about his life as a star, his budding relationship with Lucy, how he has been feeling during this cold weather. Does he have a PA to do all his typing? Or does he have an agent now that he is an actor? |
Rogue Squirrel? That's nothing... Written by MagicMeerkat on 2007-02-19 08:26:07 At least it wasn't on drugs. http://www.guardian.co.uk/drugs/Story/0,,1587733,00.html |

Written by Vikitty on 2007-02-18 22:18:53 Oooh I haven't seen "The Departed" yet... but I looooved "Infernal Affairs"! So yes, I should watch the former, and you should watch the latter. =) |
Written by Rally Killer on 2007-02-17 22:21:05 Oh yeah! I watched that movie for the first time on Valentine's Day with my boyfriend. It was amazing. I wish I got free movies, but all my friends have so many movies I can just steal then whenever I feel the need. |
Written by spamco on 2007-02-17 16:30:12 As terrible as The Rogue Squirrel story was...I have to admit that I cracked up while reading it. |
Written by christmaslight on 2007-02-17 14:28:46 Ah, I loved the Departed. DiCaprio is one of my all-time favorite actors. Feel better!! |
Written by Shawna on 2007-02-17 12:15:48 I'll definitely have to see that film. Haven't been able to see as many as I'd like lately (mostly stuck with borrowing from friends or otherwise getting them for free). And they killed that poor squirrel? The animals! How would they like it if someone killed them because they *might* have something? |
re The Metro article... Written by 11nine73 on 2007-02-17 05:01:01 How do you do that?! I mean seriously, do you Google squirrels on a daily basis or something? Because I missed this and it's in my sodding area! But yeah... how did it get on the plane? I dunno. So much for airport security... Love and nuts Helen x |
Written by SeiyaTheLeaper on 2007-02-17 03:29:46 How unfair is it that a poor squirrel gets killed without even testing him for disease FIRST? The poor little bugger was just in the wrong place at the wrong time! Thanks for the movie recommandation! |
Written by Zerocool on 2007-02-17 02:04:10 Nothing like the metro for random stories free movies! (sooo unfair!) Will make note to check out The Departed. Looking forward to the London love fest report |
Written by Dew on 2007-02-17 01:27:59 The Departed based on Infernal Affairs? Great now I'll have to suffer through and see it. Really can't stand DiCrapio at all. That turd's bugged me since watching Growing Pains far to many years ago. But I loved Infernal Affairs so will have to deal. And the poor little nut eater. He just wanted to get to Dallas. |
Departed ,,, spookily ... Written by amararti on 2007-02-16 23:54:31 ... on your recommendation I just tabbed to Amazon to check out DVD release dates, price etc. and there was Departed - first in the What Other Users Are Viewing list. As stuff is transient in the list - what a coincidence was THAT?! How does it feel to have that much power Incidentally (for those interested) the release date on Amazon UK is given as Feb 19th (Monday in other words - Yay!) and it is £14.99 (14 GBP) that's cheaper than Play.com which is unusual. May The Force ... oh well - you know ... AMx |
Well now... Written by Aten on 2007-02-16 22:27:20 ...There's a head-scratcher if ever I saw one. Squirrels certainly are crafty devils. I contemplated seeing The Departed, but actually getting out and going to the movies isn't something I usually do. I'm a devout renter. I'm only a hop, skip and a jump from Blockbuster, anyhow, so all certainly won't be lost for long. |
OMG... Written by Netty on 2007-02-16 20:38:14 The poor squirrel! They killed one of us! Ur lucky getting dvds n tickets. man, now uv made me want to see the movie..grr lol |

Written by Kim on 2007-02-16 20:01:42 Can I recommend Hot Fuzz? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425112/ Tomorrow, I'll recommend ADB to Simon Pegg. Get well soon! |
Written by s_aurius on 2007-02-16 19:20:55 My sister was just talking about this movie today. She and her husband watched it over the weekend. I'll have to make sure to check it out. Poor little squirrel. He didn't make it too far on his trip. |
stowaway varmints! Written by AylaMc on 2007-02-16 19:00:32 haha, that article was something else. (but they killed the squirrely! couldn't they have just tested for rabies? and someone called it a varmint, in a very yosammity sam-esque fashion) i love jack nicholson's films, and this is one i've been really interested in seeing. i'll have to eventually. |
Written by windshieldbug on 2007-02-16 18:50:49 Lol, we posted about the squirrel on the forums and I claimed that it was me.....and that they killed a "stuffie" in place of me! You are welcome to send those free tickets this way when you decide not to use them. I love going and critiquing films. :-P That plus I have nothing to do but work with hubby in the desert. |
Someone's feeling better! Written by rosiewook on 2007-02-16 17:12:00 You've been on a lot today. Are you feeling better? I have to admit to staying away from The Departed because of Jack Nicholson. I just never see him as anything but Jack. I don't get him. (It probably doesn't help that one boyfriend took me to see As Good As It Gets right before he dumped me.) But I'll add it to the ol' Netflix list and give it a shot! And we can't wait to see you in a Scorsese film. |
Written by Kate28 on 2007-02-16 17:01:02 Sounds like a good flick, I might try to get a copy this weekend! Thanks for giving it the nod. Curiosity killed the squirrel: it's such a shame. |
Written by KDJ on 2007-02-16 16:26:53 The Departed is a fantastic film. I don't go to the cinema often as it's hugely expensive these days (converts to about $15) and usually ends up being a disappointment. This was a good one though. Aww poor squirrel. Perhaps this one looked threatening? Was he armed with a geeky t-shirt and a stack of leaflets? Did he refuse to relinquish the complimentary nuts until an ADB screening was announced in his area? |
Written by archae_ology on 2007-02-16 16:21:43 Infernal, meant infernal. Was writing huge paper at the time. 2850 words. Wow, i'm brain dead. And anyways...poor squirrel. |
Squirrels on a Plane Written by lemonchicken on 2007-02-16 15:44:54 Poor, poor little squirrel. They always use the excuse of rabies to kill an animal. Though, this could make for a blockbuster hit, no? Squirrels on a Plane! Crazy nut eating rodents terrorize small children and adults alike, who, foolishly, are reluctant to part with their package of peanuts. |
They Killed it? Written by ForkOfDoom on 2007-02-16 14:41:18 They killed the squirrel? That's hardly fair! |
Written by sammy on 2007-02-16 14:13:54 aww, poor little squirrel. will have to remember not to mention im a dgeek squirrel on my next plane journey! havent seen the film, but really want to, so ill have to look into it. hope you and jane are feeling better. |
They killed a squirrel? :( Written by Annie on 2007-02-16 13:58:25 That's so sad. I can understand why they had to do it but still, poor little blighter. Not seen the film yet, has it been released here in England yet? I don't get to go to the cinema a lot, I think the last film I saw at the cinema (not counting A Dogs Breakfast) may have been X-3... Hope you and Jane are feeling better. Ho hum, off to see if I can actually remember what the film was. |
My second rec Written by crazymom on 2007-02-16 13:56:37 A Netflix friend just sent me a "movie note" recommending this one, too. I'm definitely going to have to check it out. |
OOOHHH... Written by Amy_McKay on 2007-02-16 13:52:05 Screening copies sounds cool I really hope that Martin Scorsese will win the Oscar *cross my fingers* And the other news - My first thought reading this article - a squirrel on the way to the ADB screening And then- THEY KILLED THE POOR SQUIRREL?!
|
Written by sueKay on 2007-02-16 12:51:58 Thanks for the film rec! I've heard good things about it, but I've never really checked it out so Might do now! Poor squirrel...why do they always just kill animals? |
The Departed rocked! Written by Sweeneybird on 2007-02-16 12:40:38 I thought it was a terrific film all around, but I was particularly taken by the way that Boston is a character in the movie too. A lot of it was filmed down near the offices where I used to work, so it was a bit distracting when some ultra-violence was going on and I'd whisper, 'Look! That's my old window!" One funny note - a lot of the special double secret cell phone conversations among the criminals appear to have been filmed by the MBTA dock at the Federal Courthouse. |
Written by psychofilly on 2007-02-16 12:29:52 Ooh, good to know. I just got this in the mail from Netflix. I plan to watch it this weekend, and all I keep hearing is how fantastic it is. |
Written by Lady of the Lake on 2007-02-16 12:28:22 Being a fan of Leo DiCaprio's for a long time I always try to see his movies as much as I can the only bad part of being in Alaska is no movies here... so I get to miss it you are so lucky....Hopefully I get to see the Harry Potter film if i miss that I be so sad. |
Written by Becky S. on 2007-02-16 12:17:45 I saw the squirrel story earlier. It is both funny and sad. As for "The Departed" my boyfriend ordered it and we'll see it when we get it, which should be today or tomorrow. Everything we heard about it has been great. Glad you enjoyed it! |
Written by shelsfc on 2007-02-16 12:14:15 Aw, that poor squirrel! I haven't seen The Departed yet, but now it will probably be the next thing I rent out! Thanks for the rec! |
Written by archae_ology on 2007-02-16 12:11:24 My best friend is a huge Asian film buff and she says that Internal Affairs is one of her all time favourite films. I think i'm going to have to rent "The Departed" this weekend, seeing as I actually have time to relax for a few days before frantically cramming for my midterms. Lol. |
Squirrel murder? Written by Arlessiar on 2007-02-16 11:51:04 They killed that poor little squirrel??? Noooo! That you're getting free movies sounds pretty cool though. And when will you get your SAG award then? |
Written by elfgirl on 2007-02-16 11:50:19 There are several nom'd films this year that I'd love to see, and that one of them. Alas...it's been years since I could say I'd seen all the Best Picture noms in a year. Not for lack of desire, just time. I can't manage to watch Heroes right now, much less something that requires leaving the house. |
Written by Night Spring on 2007-02-16 11:44:56 Aw! Poor squirrel! Thanks for the rec on The Departed, we saw Matt Damon talking about it on -- I believe it was "Actor's Studio," but maybe it was some other talk show -- complete with some "sneak peek" scenes, and were thinking we should go see it, then plain forgot about it! So it's good to be reminded -- Nicholson was fantastic in the sneak peek scene we saw! |
Written by pavaneofstars on 2007-02-16 11:43:45 Lucky you, getting free movies! :D Thanks for the film rec, I'll have to check that one out. The Rogue Squirrel story is both funny and sad. Too bad they had to kill it. |
