I know it doesn't look like much, but there's been a lot of excitment for me today as I've upgraded our dGeek-dogs-breakfast site to the latest version of glorious Joomla! For those of you who know what I'm talking about... Get a life! For those of you who don't...it was nerve wracking and now I feel very smart and proud of myself... McKay-like in other words!
I've done this so that I can add some fancy pants modules to the site, including Community Builder which is as new to me as it will be to you and if not, let me know what you are supposed to be able to do with it! One of its features, once I install a few more hair-raising modules, is a Personal Messaging feature, something I know some of you have been asking about. If you encounter any problems along the way, please let me know. I've fixed the small problem of every post on the dGeek Forum coming up as "null" (major sweaty, stomach-churning panic attack there!).
I'm just geeking out right now as I have flu-brain (yep! Jane and I are still out for the Valentine's Day Count) I just want to be a dGeek right now...not entertaining or writerly I'm afraid. I do promise updates, but first I need to curl up by the fire and geek out a bit. Then I'm going to make Jane the first dinner I ever made for her and then probably drop dead judging by the way I feel!

Love the site Written by nanook660 on 2007-03-21 13:57:49 EWWWWWWW new toys to play with. Me like toys. YA Ya Ya! Love the site. Most of the time I have no clue as to what you are saying is there a "Guide Book For Geeks" out there? Like those yellow Dummies books? Peace Fran |
Written by nunshavingfun on 2007-02-20 20:06:44 Now we get to upload bizarre pictures of ourselves! |
Written by Trialia on 2007-02-17 04:24:17 I hope you get rid of the flu soon, I'm still trying. Spent all my birthday (10th) throwing up! It really seems to be going round the internet, though I'm sure that is impossible. Still, it's weird. Get well soon, both of you. |
Written by crownglass39 on 2007-02-16 20:39:27 Ok, seriously, you're not allowed to play with the fish eye lens anymore. You're just having way too much fun with it. |
Written by valderys on 2007-02-16 08:42:42 Aww, I love it when you go all code monkey Hugs both to you and Jane, and I hope you're better soon. Lemon juice, honey, brandy, hot water - you'll feel better, I promise - and if not you'll be too tipsy to care! (And thanks for making P2 so great, even when you were so under the weather - here's hoping you can make it over here again sometime...) Happy V-day! |
Because geeks are happy people! Written by fnordine on 2007-02-16 01:04:31 I was pretty happy just looking around, but after this post i had to register and comment... I know what you are talking about! I prefer using Plone CMS because.. YIKES! PHP! Anyway, now that you made me register (heh) I'll browse around. Joomla! looks pretty cool And I wish you two a fast recovery, full of coding and loving Daleks (here is a scary tought, uh? ) |
Written by meljbuck on 2007-02-15 19:43:28 Ahhh the post con flu! Hubby and self are still recovering but it was well worth it. So glad to hear about the screenings and I would say take it easy but after talking to Jane at P2 I suspect that only if she tranquilizers you!! Make her a nice dinner then do you zoning out and get your strength up. (yeah I'm nagging) Hope you had fun at P2 and enjoyed Annie and myself bidding on that photo of you and Kate (laughs)... love and peace back |
Written by Laitaine on 2007-02-15 19:05:07 I do promise updates, but first I need to curl up by the fire and geek out a bit. This was pretty much my evening yesterday; geekery is the best way to relax Happy Valentines, enjoy your dinner, and I hope you and Jane feel better. |
Written by MdGateFan on 2007-02-15 18:34:10 Very interesting photo there. I am putting my photography geek hat on and trying to figure out if that was done with the camera and a funky lense or if it was done in Photoshop. Either way it is a great shot. Thanks for all the work you are putting into this site.

Written by Lady of the Lake on 2007-02-15 14:37:17 Community Builder is awesome way to go I have one on my own site... Yeah Being sick no fun and I'm sick to though my advise is to drink of a lot of water and rest. Happy Valentine's Day to you all.. |

"I'm going to make Jane the first dinner I ever made for her" - now what did she ever do to deserve that?! Only joking - I'm sure you'll cope... and look adorable in the pinny Love n hugs and GO TO BED! Helen x the Giggle Squirrel |

It's Loverly... Written by Annie on 2007-02-15 11:50:59 Popped onto the site at lunchtime and saw that you'd done some updates and I thought coolies - then text Wabit to tell her! Am gonna play with the changes, thank you very much for all the work you've put into the site. Hope you and Jane feel better soon and that the meal went well. Taking it easy is a very good idea. Happy belated valentines to everyone, hope you all had a great day. |
Heh! Written by crazymom on 2007-02-15 11:25:37 I was looking at the "Who's Online" list, and I said, "Oh, Fool With a Party Hat is gone! But Icarus is on now!" Behind me my teenage son said in a sing-song voice "Someone needs to get a life..." |
Written by lemonchicken on 2007-02-15 11:02:13 The tree is getting renovated again! Hooray! Still got the flu? Stop working so hard on here and rest! ... right, I should take my own advice. All the best as always! |
Written by Captain Peregrine on 2007-02-15 10:53:55 BTW, I love the picture. hehe |
Written by Captain Peregrine on 2007-02-15 10:53:04 Hope you and Jane feel better real soon. I look forward to future changes... though I haven't a clue what you said. :D Hope dinner went okay. |
Cool! Written by ladyc3 on 2007-02-15 10:45:30 This is great David. Hope you and Jane feel better soon and a belated Happy V-day to you and the rest of the geeks/squirrels. Now off to class and a much dreaded math exam...Have I mentioned I hate math? Constance |
Cool! Written by crazymom on 2007-02-15 10:41:46 I really like the "Who's Online" bit (just because I'm nosy, I think)! I have no idea what Community Builder is, so I'll let the other squirrels sort that out before I try to figure it out. |
Written by Mercury973 on 2007-02-15 10:14:13 Site looks mighty spiffy. Get well soon! This ick is no fun.
|
CB Written by zwild1 on 2007-02-15 09:27:00 Great geeky addition to the site. Thanks for that! Stress is great for depleting the immune system, so take a few days and de-stress. Oh, and chocolate and a fine wine is good for what ails you too! |
Written by Jand on 2007-02-15 08:41:49 Happy belated Valentines Day. I finally got the site to accept my password,I'm afraid I have been lurking for the last 4 months. I have very much enjoyed the chatter: you've got some excellent minions. Your new additions seem to work just beautifully, but I agree with the fellow Squirrels - rest and liquids should be your first priority. Suggestion for the the flu, especially if your throat is part of the problem. Coffee mug of hot water mixed with a teaspoon of cayenne pepper - gargle-you need not actually drink it. I know this sounds disgusting but it really has helped all of the sick ones in my household. After you finish the gargle chew then suck on a whole clove. After a few doses I noticed the whining and croaking around the house reduced considerably. Congratulations to you and Jane, feel better. |
Written by shelsfc on 2007-02-15 08:22:45 The community builder is great! Thank you! I hope you both get well soon! |
Written by Purpleyin on 2007-02-15 08:00:13 Mmm, content management system - new features are always fun to get, if scary to install. (yeah, I'm getting a life - right after I learn php ) Eeek, flu-brain. Seems that's been going around Pegasus 2 attendees - the literal con fever! Hope you and Jane had a lovely Valentines dinner, and that you both feel much better soon. Meanwhile, happy geeking. :D |
REST! Written by crazy4dh on 2007-02-15 07:59:19 You have the FLU! Rest,Sleep, Curl up on couch with Jane and watch TV, order in - don't cook! Don't stress out adding complicated sounding things to the Forum. The little squirrels can take care of themselves for awhile while Squirrel King recovers. Going Motherly for a moment - Chicken Soup really does help (something in the chicken helps the immune system), plenty of fluids, and rest. Stop wearing yourself completely out and let your body recuperate. OKAY ENOUGH MOTHERING as my son would say. He always accuses me of hovering when he's sick. "Still Alive" is the only thing we need to hear from either of you until you are better. If you lived closer to the squirrel minions neither of you would have to lift a finger until completely well.

Squee! A lovely Valentine's gift Written by rosiewook on 2007-02-15 05:03:47 Awww. You're so nice to your little squirrels. Building us more things to play with for Valentine's Day. Give us a few days, we'll break it for you. As a public health professional I'm about to slap a quarantine on this place. Get rid of the disease and pestilence, people! So here's the new rule for those who are still sick: you need to stay home and sleep a lot (computer surfing does not qualify as sleep) and you need to get at least 8 ounces of non-alcoholic beverage in you every hour you're awake. It will help tremendously. Believe me! However, because we are concerned, please at least post a two-word "still alive" blog so we know that we haven't lost our King and Queen Squirrel. Everyone feel better! Paula |
Written by sammy on 2007-02-15 04:30:07 Great news about the improvements to the site. but definately lay back and get yourself well, instead of updating when you're ill. is it the same bug you had in london? hope you and jane get better soon and happy valentines day to you both! |
Flu and panic attacks.... Written by Gebo on 2007-02-15 04:13:34 These are NEVER a good combination. Neither is a broken finger which I have at the moment. GOD it's hard typing. Anyhow I hope you both feel better soon, and had a wonderful Valentine's day despite the flu. |
Evil Flu (from London?) Written by Amy_McKay on 2007-02-15 04:04:12 You both - Get well soon!!! Currently myself has a flu. Then I'm going to make Jane the first dinner I ever made for her - I hope it tasted better than MREs Afterwards - A Happy Valentine to D! and Jane |
Written by SeiyaTheLeaper on 2007-02-15 03:19:27 Ooohhh! Personal messages!!! Nice!! And new geeky stuff to figure out and play with... double nice! Thanks, David! Hope you'll feel better soon! And good luck, Jane, for your first "David-cooked" dinner!! |
Written by gravityisalie on 2007-02-15 02:52:33 getting into work and reading your latest post , what better way to start the day!!! i reccomend vodka , lemons and 2 aspirin mixed in hot water , it doesnt quite cure the flu but your too drunk to care! mwah , get well soon! |
Written by Squonk on 2007-02-15 02:47:09 You're still ill!?! Bless you! I hope it all clears up soon - and that you don't add more food poisoning to the the mix with this meal! Thanks for the modifications (i know nothing about computers so it all kinda goes over my head i'm afraid) Now go and rest! |
Written by dutch eowyn on 2007-02-15 02:44:49 Thank you for being so good for us, now please go and get some serious, much needed and well deserved relaxation done? Curl up with Jane, listen to some music, watch a couple of dvd's, ignore the squirrels for a bit; we'll play among ourselves |
Loving it! Written by Kate28 on 2007-02-15 02:31:07 Gosh I'm having fun playing around with the new features - thank you for adding them David! And still not well eh? Sorry to hear it, take care and feel better soon both of you! |
Get well soon! Written by Catsitter on 2007-02-15 02:04:03 Yes, hope you and Jane are feeling better soon, and the improvements to the site sound good. Thanks! |
Funny Valentine... Written by watcher652 on 2007-02-15 00:51:45 Wow, that's a very interesting photo of you, er, Patrick. I love the weird perspective, your head so large and your feet so small and far away. You look a little like Hank Azaria (sorry, just saw Mystery Men on SciFi). Thanks for tweaking this site. It's fun to discover new things. You do back up before you tweak, right? So not food poisoning, but flu? Or maybe both? Ugh! Please take care of yourself. We want you all rested and well when you go back to filming Atlantis. |
FLU = LAME...kay thanks. Written by spamco on 2007-02-14 23:55:45 & geeking out = love. That's how I generally live my life, no matter what I'm doing. I find it to be entertaining. Hope you two feel better. =D |

Written by AylaMc on 2007-02-14 22:49:12 feel better! seems like everyone's feeling under the weather now (a lot of people I know are suffering from flu/cold, and I have my own health issues to worry about) the site stuff sounds nifty (if maybe I don't understand most of it) and the suggestion of a PM system makes me go ooh! look forward to hearing your thoughts on Peg2 and the London Screenings! |
Written by Netty on 2007-02-14 22:36:20 Great to hear from you again. I know its a bit late (well i think it is...its the 15th in australia now) but happy valentines day. Ive taken a look at the extras youve put up and its great. Thx alot. Really apreciate it. I did filming yesterday for valentines day for skool and it was fun. My teacher said i did a good job. New CB Features ... Written by amararti on 2007-02-14 22:34:22 Hi again David, the new features you've added so for look great. It's interesting to see that there are over 1500 registered members. I wonder if its possible to add a field to show how many are online instead of scanning through 54 pages?? (yes I really did). Maybe list users alphbetically or even online users first then those offline - that would be cool - but I don't know how configurable this stuff is (and yes - I do want the moon on a stick ) However - NO more mods till you are feeling better - go hibernate for a few days you poorly little squirrel .. BTW - who approves the CB pics. Peace, Love and hibernation ... AMx |
Happy Valentine's Day Written by tmac72 on 2007-02-14 22:33:58 Wow, you are really going above and beyond for us. Thanks for fixing the problem from this morning. I was going ‘nuts’ because my husband has gone anti-coffee and didn’t make any so I was missing my caffeine fix then I couldn’t get a hit of dgeek. I was in bad shape for about an hour. I’m sorry to hear that you and Jane are both sick on your first Valentine’s as an engaged couple. Everyone here has been sick with something for a few weeks. I am finally getting over it just in time for my son’s second round of it. I swear it’s like the plague that just won’t go away. Stay in, stay warm, drink lots of fluids....you know the drill. I’m off to check out the cool updates I am hearing about. Many thanks and much love to you both.

By all means, geek out! Written by crazymom on 2007-02-14 22:23:52 I'm planning on moving as little as possible this weekend myself. My sister is coming, and our plans include several DVDs and a big bucket of frozen margaritas. She has already claimed (long-distance) the massaging recliner. I'm too lazy to build a fire, but the loveseat and an electric blanket make a good substitute, I've found. Whenever the site does something strange, I imaging you out there playing Mad Geek somewhere! Have fun, fix Jane something nice, and then collapse for a while, for heaven's sake! |
Written by stillwaters on 2007-02-14 22:19:59 Go! Go! Take a nice long break and don't come back until you've had a real chance to recharge and get healthy! *raises glass* Cheers! |
back again... Written by Aurora on 2007-02-14 22:18:08 ..just to say I really like the Community Builder. We now have profiles on here and that is a great thing to have on a forum. Helps people get to know each other better. Oh and the Searchable Users list...also very cool to have. Easier to find people. Great additions to the site David. |
Written by Shawna on 2007-02-14 21:59:17 Well, this just looks neat. It'll be interesting to see how these new features affect the place. Good work on getting that little "null" issue solved quickly, though. What were you, just sitting around the computer all day? Sorry to hear you guys are still sick. Seems like just about everyone I know has something. I've just come down with some throat thing that I think is strep, myself. That picture's quite...interesting. Still can't wait to see more. Happy V-Day, monsieur et mademoiselle (soon to be madame). |
Written by Becky S. on 2007-02-14 21:53:01 It will be interesting to see what you are adding to the site. Thank you for taking the time to improve it. By all means, rest! As much as we want to hear everything you are going to tell us, we don't want you or Jane sick or exhausted. We'll wait. Take care of yourseves first. |
Written by thaddia on 2007-02-14 21:45:12 Seems like there's a lot of people out sick this Valentines. I hope everyone feels better soon! Happy Valentines! |

Written by Aurora on 2007-02-14 21:26:44 Is it at all weird that I am excited about checking out the Community Builder and figure it out? Yup...I turning into a geek more and more everyday. I love it..lol I just want to be a dGeek right now...not entertaining or writerly I'm afraid. By all means...take a break...geek out and enjoy yourself. Play a bit. David, I hope you and Jane feel better soon. Happy Valentine's Day |
Personal Messages?! Written by Aten on 2007-02-14 21:14:30 Sounds like a good idea, but of course, here comes pessimist-girl to see one little, insignificant ramification: You'll have no idea what we'll be talking about. Unless you can read what we write in private messages, too. VIOLATION OF PRIVACY!!! I'm not the first (and definitely won't be the last) person to say that stress like this is no good for illness recovery, but geeking out certainly is. I can proudly say I didn't suffer from the infamous "animator's disease" (sickness contracted from sharing a keyboard with a sick person) this year on my robotics team, but the sense of acheivement gained from getting CG characters to walk for the first time ever (*EEEEEEE!*) contributed to my well-being like no other. Gotta love home remedies. As for this Community Builder...I'm at a loss. It sounds like an overall good idea, though (despite my negative rant above). I guess I don't spend my entire life in this rolling, adjustable swivel chair after all... |
Wide eyed ... Written by amararti on 2007-02-14 21:00:28 but not bushy tailed by the sound of it! Thanks for all your efforts forum-wise (and just about everything-else-wise for that matter) but honestly it sounds like you (both) need to take some serious REST - after all, don't you have a trip to a galaxy far, far away in a little less than two weeks? However, who am I to talk about obsession - after all it is 2:55 in the a.m. here in the UK - nuff said ... Well it is probably still Valentine's Day where you are *does a little geographical and time zone mental calculation* yup, so Happy Valentine's from a.n.other-geek-who-can't-sleep Love, peace and better health .. AMx |
Written by s_aurius on 2007-02-14 20:58:57 Happy Valentines to you too! What a great gift for all us squirrels an update from you. I hope that you feel better soon. My husband was sick today as well so not much going on for us this evening. I hope that you're able to enjoy our time. I look forward to the IM feature! |
Hey. Written by Dew on 2007-02-14 20:58:34 No killing Jane with food. That would be very bad. Rest at least and try to get better. |
No sweaty panic attacks, now... Written by Jan on 2007-02-14 20:37:13 Don't go working yourself up into any heart-pounding, ulcer-causing panic attacks on OUE account. I can just see the next story to make it to digg's front page: "Squirrels took my health, my peace of mind, MY WILL TO LIVE..." I really don't think any of us would want that. Take a deep breath. Have a mince pie. Don't spend your Valentine's Day anything less than happy.
