Well aren’t I the last to know?! Turns out I’ve been scooped… by just about everyone!
We got back Friday night in time to gear up (in other words keep Jane in bed) for our first official photo shoot. MGM had us do a "A Dog’s Breakfast" photo shoot on Sunday, which went famously. It was great to have little Katherine Hewlett here again. Even if she orders Big Macs’ without the meat - who does that!? She also drinks all of our champagne and as it turns out, dog-sits Mars while we hurtle around frozen freeways!
Speaking of which, Jane tells me that she only loves me because, since we met, she’s been able to, not only drink champagne, but drink if often enough to have a "favourite" one – (Veuve Cliquot) It all sounds a bit "Absolutely Fabulous" to me, darlings ("Bolly" Baby!) The point being, you can all rest better in the knowledge that we’re about to have a whole slew of fine “Breakfast” snaps for you to play with in the near future. And an official poster for our puppy. Way to go MGM!
We have been dying to tell everyone about all the meetings and development schtuff, but we really couldn’t jump the gun. "Starcrossed" is SciFi’s series after all! Here’s how it all came about:
Way back at MGM’s wickedly cool 200th episode party we mentioned to one of the SciFi attendees that we had an idea for a series. They seemed interested, but before I could complete the idea and become the complete rabid schmooze weasel I longed to be, I was dragged off to embarrass myself in a “Behind-the-Hors D‘oeuvres” interview. If only I could use my rodent promoting skills for good! Luckily, Jane and John jumped in and launched into party pitch. The result was an invitation to pitch "Starcrossed" to the fine lads and ladies at SciFi! The problem was that I was in the final stretch of Atlantis, so a "free day" was hard to come by. We ended up having to wait for the end of shooting season three before heading down to do the serious series pitching. Finally, we got ourselves down to the SciFi offices in Universal City (I know Universal City! "We’re here to meet with SciFi, don’t you know" Weeee!) while we were down for the L.A. screening. They laughed at us, a great thing in this situation, and took us to then next stage - development!
So, I’m now hunkering down to write episode one of "Starcrossed"! We’re hoping to have a script in SciFi’s sweaty hands (I don’t actually know that they’re sweaty, but it’s got to warmer than Washington State, right?) by the end of February. Just in time for me to dive back into Atlantis and becoming again the man that made this all possible, Dr. Rodney McKay. Which reminds me – exercise! I’m going to be on camera again in just over a month! Stupid Jane and her stupid mince-pies…mince-stupid-pies ,yum!

Hello Written by Palpatine on 2007-01-19 19:59:55 Hi I'm Palpatine and I'm wondering if there is a lick of truth at all, to Doctor Beckett's being written off of Stargate Atlantis? and if so why? for it makes not a hint of sense as to why they'd kill of a main character like that, especially one that's such an important part of the show too. And is there a lick of truth to Doctor Elizabeth Weir's being killed off and replaced with Samantha Carter too? |
Coolbeans. Written by Dew on 2007-01-17 19:50:38 Will be most interested to see what happens with Starcrossed. Driving was so fun these last few days, wasn't it? Yay ice and snow. You'd need something lot stronger than champagne and pain meds after this mess. At least they think it's back to plain ol' rain for the rest of the week. |
Written by Scary on 2007-01-17 19:31:54 Congrats on STARCROSSED!!!! I am so excited. I only hope it airs in Canada and I don't have to do something illegal to watch it. Looking forward to those ADB photos and the official poster. Please say Paul is in Starcrossed!!!!!!! |
Written by crownglass39 on 2007-01-17 15:43:04 Congrats! Now we just need to find you one of those nifty hats that Kato wore... I can't wait to see the ep where the actors in StarCrossed find out about the joy and wonders of "fanfiction"... "They write What?!?" |
Written by tearfall on 2007-01-17 14:15:48 Sounds like a great idea, though I guess I'm selfish in hoping that it won't impact on Stargate Atlantis - because I really want you there |
Written by Sithdragn on 2007-01-17 11:08:14 Congrats on Starcrossed! I'm sure it will be fab. I really, really, really hope we'll be seeing Mr. McGillion there, btw. I can't imagine anyone else in the role! Best wishes to Jane (and to you, by the sounds of it). |
Written by gollysunshine on 2007-01-17 00:11:06 Congrats and good luck. Next time you're on the Universal lot, stop by and say hello. |
Written by mrskorber on 2007-01-16 21:05:38 Dude. Congrats, but ... after recent events, the thought of you being tooooooo busy for SGA makes me a little verklempt. So don't be too busy for SGA TOO soon, okay? Still. I wish you the best of luck with your projects. And on the recovery thing. I hate having people poking my innards and rearranging things. Scopes just shouldn't GO some places! Mitch K |
Congrats.... Written by MdGateFan on 2007-01-16 19:30:03 Congradulations on Starcrossed getting pick up. That is great news. Writing, promoting "A Dog's Breakfast", traveling exercising... it sounds like you are going to one busy beaver... or should I say squirrel. I hope all goes well with everything. .. |
Get well soon, Jane! Written by Jan on 2007-01-16 17:35:06 Wedding planning, a movie to promote, and now, a new series... hope you're soon well enough to enjoy all your amazing success, and to actually to apply yourself to all of that grinding work that lies ahead in the next few months. Oh, and I suppose congratulations to DH, too, while I'm typing. |
Written by LaClau on 2007-01-16 17:12:44 I'm gonna go all fangirl and WEEEEE!!! I can't wait. I read about it at Gateworld and Futon Critic and I just know I'm gonna love that show =D

Written by Erynn on 2007-01-16 16:16:05 I hope you're feeling better soon, Jane. Had I known y'all were going to be down this way I'd have waved as you zipped by Everett. Congratulations on Starcrossed. Any chance of Getting Paul to reprise his role in it? That might almost make up for what just happened on Sunday. Maybe. At least I know *you* wouldn't do that to him. |
Written by xfkirsten on 2007-01-16 16:11:58 Congratulations! I'm very excited to see this new series!! :D And I'm still waiting for a Seattle showing of ADB, because I need to see it, like, NOW! Awww, the icy roads haven't been so bad! Well, except last Wednesday, when my hour-and-a-half commute turned into 9 hours when my car got stuck halfway up a hill. It's just another Seattle weather adventure this year. (Personally, I'm hedging bets that we'll get The Big Quake in the next three months, because we need it to complete the winter natural disaster trifecta) Good wishes to Jane, for a speedy recovery! :D |
Written by PB_Gal on 2007-01-16 16:11:36 I can't beleive they only had two lines 2nd last to that article.. it should be 2nd on the list, only second to the G.Clooney one :P I of course heard on gateworld :P Congrats again mate. Oh and if you loved Absolutely Faboulous you should get you hands on some "Kath and Kim" |
Never had mince-meat pie.... Written by bluejay on 2007-01-16 15:58:20 Wow you have been busy! Congratulations on everything that's been happening. I can easily tell that Starcrossed is going to kick George Clooney's mini-series in the pants. Yes, don't deny it! (And a side-note to Sci-Fi, there better be a Season 5!) Best wishes to everyone, especially Jane. |
Written by sammy on 2007-01-16 15:41:54 Congradulations on 'starcrossed'! is it gonna be anything like the starcrossed show pauls character is in in your ADB film? since it has the same name? hmm pies! i actually read freyas post and cracked up laughin as i had just thought of another point in tao of rodney (which im actually watchin at the mo) and i had just got up to the point where your character stole carsons doughnut and ronon makes a comment about "fatman"! Just challenge mars to a run around the park, that should put you back in shape!
|
COOL!!! Written by Usagili24 on 2007-01-16 15:21:19 Can't wait for the end of season 3 let alone having to wait for season 4. Now I have to wait for Starcrossed and ADB. *passes out* I don't wanna wait I want everything now. (LOL my friend just Shep smacked me) Well we don't always get what we want. But I would love it if you did a screening in Florida. *sniffles* Nobody comes to Florida. *cries* Why doesn't anybody come to Florida. The closest Sci-Fi has come to Florida has been Georgia. *sniffles* Please come to Florida, Orlando's a good place. Tampa's sweet to, just think of all the beaches. |
Thank you! Written by reona_cat on 2007-01-16 15:16:40 Pictures! [flails] We get pictures? New Poster Written by Freya on 2007-01-16 14:53:57 You're getting a new poster for the ADB? As much as I LOVE the old one(perfect to post on random street poles)I can't wait to see the new one. |
Written by sueKay on 2007-01-16 10:49:16 Congrats!!! I honestly cannot wait to see what Starcrossed is gonna be like! I am a huge fan of sci fi comedy I'll be turning the spoof site into a real one when I get the chance too! Any hints as to which actors we can expect to see on Starcrossed? |
Cheers! Written by chynadoll on 2007-01-16 10:19:49 Aside from the maintenance work (feel better soon, Jane), what wonderful news! Congratulations to all of you. I'm glad to see how all your hard work is paying off. As for the champagne - look at Kate, rocking with the Widow. Excellent choice for champagne. That's my favorite as well, followed by Piper Heidsieck. Alas, "champagne taste, beer budget" applies in my situation. Congrats again, and best of luck! |
mmmm pie Written by Freya on 2007-01-16 10:18:48 Wow, you sure are keeping busy. I really don't know how you'll be able to write the script and learn all the McKay dialogue. Then again, maybe you are Superman hmmm…. Very curious about the new season with all the character addition/removals. This is gonna be an interesting season. And if you don’t want Ronan to make more statements as in Tao of Rodney “ SHEPPARD: [off-screen] Same old Rodney. DEX: [off-screen] You sure? He looks a couple pounds heavier to me. TEYLA: [off-screen] Ronon. DEX: [off-screen] What? He eats all the time! It's not like he exercises. SHEPPARD: [off-screen] He's feeding his unhappiness. ” , you might want to take a break from the delicious mince pies. Mmm, this made me hungry. Well I’m not a movie star so I can eat what ever I want. Moohahahaha (Evil laugh) All the best with the London screening null |
Written by Pandora on 2007-01-16 10:10:39 And just when I thought I was not sure I could find a new scifi show to replace SG-1 in the DVR slot. Starcrossed, a real show. Gosh that along with work being cancelled on account of ice, this day can get no better. Jane, take good care of yourself, the squirrels all have your back. David, you are one blessed man. Take good care of that girl of yours and we all look forward to SGA back on the air for round 4 and ADB coming to a theatre near us. 2007 is going to be a great year! |
Fabulous, dahling Written by 11nine73 on 2007-01-16 10:08:09 I did wonder why we heard from Gateworld first! Guess you're excused, in that case. "maintenance and repair…road work, really". She must really love you (or be deranged) to be marrying you when you talk about her in that way! Seriously, if it were me you'd be getting smacked about now. Good luck on the Starcrossed front. And the weight-losing one as well. Knew you'd regret eating all those pies! Like I have room to talk... Big hugs *snerk* Helen x |
Huh... Written by Aten on 2007-01-16 09:25:13 I could've sworn that McDonald's has a vegetarian selection. Then again, I'm not one to swear. I can say right now that "Starcrossed" will be anything but. From what I read of it (and saw in the movie), this new show is going to be a knockout. Besides, if you didn't write this, I would've snatched up the task in a heartbeat. A tachycardic heartbeat, even (darn my new medication!). As for Jane: A little, tiny vacation is good for the body and the mind. My dad had simple surgery recently and couldn't ride his bike for a month. While this irked him like no other, he now doubly enjoys his twice-a-week morning bike rides. Just remember that there's always a wonderful silver lining attached to these things. Wouldn't you know it, I have one friend whose mom works for NBC and another whose mom works for Universal (so, technically, don't they have the same boss?). They'll be begging me to stop asking questions soon enough. Best of wishes for Starcrossed, and for season 4 (and watch out for that ice!). I can barely contain myself! |
KNEW THERE WOULD BE BUBBLY!!!!!! Written by crazy4dh on 2007-01-16 07:56:11 Knew there was a good reason you didn't let us know first... Jane - road ma? - how do you improve perfection? Hope you feel better soon. Make David get you a little bell to ring when you need him to do something for you. Take meds, stay in bed, take advantage!! EXERCISE - great now when I don't feel like it I'll be thinking 'If David can find time to exercise so can you.' One less reason for me to be lazy. Jane - no more mince pies for awhile David needs to be able to wow us on screen. (Still hoping for more skin and cute boxers. |
Written by rosiewook on 2007-01-16 06:16:52 Jane, have we taught you nothing?! You make the man do all the work. Your job is to lay there and enjoy mocking him. ::hangs head in shame:: Take those meds! They're given to you for a reason. They'll help you rest and that will help you heal up more quickly. David. What are you doing reading these comments? You should be exercising while writing the first episode of Starcrossed. We're all seriously proud of you guys. Can't wait to see the finished product and the photo shoot stuff. Oh the mischief we can get into with new piccies! |
Written by Night Spring on 2007-01-16 06:13:28 Hi! There you are! Hope Jane feels better soon. I'll look forward to seeing her mince pies on you in season 4! And is it bad that when I saw all the hoolaboo this weekend over the changes in Stargate Atlantis, my first thought was: Great! More material for David's new show! :D |
My congratulations Written by Ivan on 2007-01-16 06:04:04 I'm glad to hear that , but I'm sad just a little because the fourth season will come to Russia only after year (Probably more than year). Well , I wish you luck Mr. Hewlett. Ivan |

Starcrossed Squee! Written by Sweeneybird on 2007-01-16 04:26:50 I'm so excited for all of you! But I beg you, David, don't go all 'Rodney McKay, Action Hero' on us - I like my scientific geniuses to look like, well, scientific geniuses. |
Written by paxford on 2007-01-16 01:52:07 Wow! is that a Moose-Penguin hybrid? or something uniquely Canadian? And the imdb listing for ADB has an interesting review... PG?? |
Congratulations! Written by dutch eowyn on 2007-01-16 01:43:20 My! Exciting and busy times! Take care of your lady (as I'm sure you will), good luck with the excercising *reminds self to do the same* and wishing you lots of energy and fun with all the upcoming and running projects |
Wheeeee! Written by Shawna on 2007-01-16 00:58:47 I cannot tell you how excited I am about this new series! I can't wait to see it, or to learn anything more about it. It sounds awsome. Thanks for finally letting us in on the secret. You know...officially. Also excited about the new pics. Yay! Will there be any more Starcrossed pics in there? heehee...I made four border crossings in one day not too long ago, but that was because I got lost in Blaine (my excuse is, it was cold, white, and I'm now fairly certain there is more than one place to cross). So, I accidentally went to Canada. At least the nice Canadian border patrol lady didn't laugh too hard at me. |
Written by mystisblom on 2007-01-16 00:47:23 I'm so happy for me right now. For me, because I'll be able to see your ideas on a weekly basis. And now last but not least, good luck for the Pilot and 'May Our Transmatter Beams Cross Again My Golden Stranger'. |
Written by pavaneofstars on 2007-01-16 00:20:14 Eeep! It ate my comment the first time I posted! Apologies if this shows up twice. Congrats on Starcrossed! It’s going to be fantastic! *bounces* I hope Jane feels better and is up and about soon. You’re such a sweetie to her.

Congratulations Two Ewes! Written by Carron on 2007-01-15 23:25:13 I am thrilled for you both! Almost makes the deep freeze we've been having seem a little less bitter. And more snow on the way - more chances for you to play on the roads. Just consider it a form of bumper-hockey. Tell Jane to rest, sleep, eat food that's completely bad for her for a few days, and take it ease on the road to recovery. We're all thinking good thoughts for her. And you, sir, to your word processor! I was so happy to hear that StarCrossed was going to become a show. I'm already laughing - I know it will be great. There is no rest for the wicked (or the h0rrid), so find a way to hook that compy to the exer-cycle and pedal your way to fame and fortune. Best to you both - and if I can pick anything up for you from Pikes or down at the International District, you just let me know. |
Written by kir_fect on 2007-01-15 23:12:59 Congrats. Well wishes to Jane. Well as in get well not fall in the well. Ah what a sweetheart you are |
Written by thaddia on 2007-01-15 22:57:08 Congrats on Starcrossed! I've been dying for you to tell us all about it. As for Kate's food order, from a vegetarian here, I gotta love her for it I always get the strange looks when I try to order my deli bagel at Einsteins with no meat...hehe. And last but not least Jane, I hope you're feeling better! |
Starcrossing Hewlett returns from Pegasu Written by watcher652 on 2007-01-15 22:48:28 Yay! A post I can attach my "Congratulations!" I'm so excited for you. Many of us were hoping this was what you were hinting at in an earlier blog. This is so yesterday's news. We're all busy now listening to your MGM interview. Just kidding. You were really funny in Andy Mikita's interview. And Martin Wood talked about the technical side of shooting Tao. Glad to read everything is ok in Hewlett/Loughman household. I thought you might have had another power outage. Kate gave us a blog entry to tide us over. I figured you'd post soon (if just to harass Kate) since you can't have her reporting all your news. Tell Jane we all want her to take it easy. She's going to be co-producing a new show for SciFi soon and she'll need her strength so she can lean on the writer to come up with those scripts. Did you feel that? It's all the squirrels jumping up and down in glee!

Written by Becky S. on 2007-01-15 22:47:13 First: All our love to Jane. Many, many wishes for a speedy recovery. Second: We knew there was a photo shoot coming up, just not when. Then Kate updated her blog and mentioned that she had been there for it. Can't wait to see those pics. Third: (and by far not least) The news about "Starcrossed" was great to hear! We're really looking forward to seeing it. And I know SueKay was thinking about changing her mock website into a real one. |

Jane, Starcrossed, McKay! Written by windshieldbug on 2007-01-15 22:36:53 David...you're hilarious. I totally needed this update today. THANK YOU! So lets see: YAY to the series. I can't believe we got that out before you...wait nevermind squirrel curiosity is incurable. End of February huh? By my bday Scifi is gonna have an epi of Starcrossed!! YAY! Kate told us about the photo shoot! Weeee!! We can't wait for shot. *Thinks of all the sigs possible.......* Time to start being Dr. McKay. Oh! I was watching "The Sentinel" the other day and the Athropologist was pretending to be a "Dr. McKay"! Weeee! It's it strange what we squirrels hear in other shows?!?!?! Go jogging, swimming, bike-riding. And eat all your Big Mac's without meat (ewwwwwwwwwwww). JANE: Hope you feel better! Take the pain meds, they make you feel better.

Woohoo! Written by tmac72 on 2007-01-15 22:36:09 HA! Big Macs’ without the meat? What's the fun in that? If you are going to have one, you may as well go all the way with it. Congratulations! That is such great news about Starcrossed. We are all very excited for you. You just keep throwing good news at us left and right. I hope that Jane is up and around soon. Take care, stay warm and keep away from the mince-pies.

Congrats yet again! Written by lemonchicken on 2007-01-15 22:35:43 Wonderful to hear it from you! I see any rumours have now been cleared up - you're writing the episode, not acting in it. We thought we might lose McKay! Great news on the photo shoot - looking forward to all the pics. Thrilled to be experiencing this all through your eyes, D. All the best to Jane. A glass of champagne for a Starcrossed filled future! |
Written by darklock on 2007-01-15 22:34:41 Well wishes to Jane. *g* Kate scooped you, too. She blogged last night that she'd been to an ADB photo-shoot for MGM o'er the week-end. |

Written by casey on 2007-01-15 22:27:39 Oh David - this is excellent news! And hope all is well with Jane. Good news and I did not expect any of this - I didn't know Starcrossed was being pitched but apparently people had been speculating Good luck with the writing. And just do lots of swimming - to exercise. There must indoor pools around Seattle right? I swim a lot and I'm tanned all over but it's summer in Sydney anyhow! |
Written by archae_ology on 2007-01-15 22:26:10 Again I must say YAYS! To the series! :D I cannot wait to see it! And good luck to Jane with the surgery as no matter how minor it still sucks liek woah. |
