Jazz Hands!
L.A Part Three...Finally!
I do go on a bit!
Here’s the third and final installment of my interminable (virtually real time) account of the L.A. screening ;-)
We finally got everyone into the theatre and I couldn’t believe it, the place was packed! I mean, we had filled the place and then some. I couldn’t get over how excited everyone seemed to be being there. I have this little theory on movies in this oh so digital world. I feel that if want people to actually go out to see a film then it needs to be an event. If it’s just a movie, you may as well just watch that at home. I generally prefer DVD these days myself. Admittedly, I am an anti-social old rodent with little interest in the hassles of life in the world outside. So, if you’re going to get me, or any other tech-friendly shut-in to the movies, you’ve got to make it a spectacle and you’ve got to make it a social event. Audiences are only going to see a movie in the theatre if they’re getting something that they can’t experience at home; a huge screen in a gorgeous theatre with a crowd of friends and like-minded film nerds perhaps? Which reminds me…Mann’s Chinese Theatre!
I’m going to completely digress here and say that one of the coolest things that we did in Los Angeles, before we all flapped our way back to our various homes, was to go to Mann’s Chinese theatre and see the latest James Bond film “Casino Royale”. I’ll admit that I wasn’t convinced about this whole “new” James Bond and this “restarting the franchise” nonsense. Here’s the thing though; from the first frame of black and white Bond I was glued to my seat. I actually caught myself thinking “how’s he going to get out of this one!?” on a number of occasions! “Casino Royale” was truly great Bond. Daniel Craig was 007 the way 007 was meant to be. The action scenes were as harrowing as anything I’ve seen! (with the possible exceptions of the “Bourne Identity” films and the car chases in “Ronin”.) Anyway, that is what I’m talking about when I say movie event! Mann’s Chinese theatre is a work of art. If you can see past the millions of milling tourists, the pickpockets and the pan-handlers, you still feel the weight of years of film history, every time you visit the place. And it doesn’t hurt to be surrounded by a few hundred wannabe 00’s either.
The point, before I went all Siskel & Ebert on you (I know, I know! One of them is dead. The question is, which one?) was that we knew from the beginning that the chances of a true theatrical release for “A Dog’s Breakfast” were somewhere close to nil. So we wanted to, and are still planning on, getting out to see you at theatres in a kind of “Book Tour”. We’ll see where we’re going to be, where the interest is and then set up screenings accordingly. MGM have said that they’re okay with that, but we’re unfortunately I’m not a billionaire (yet!) so we’re going to need to start charging admission. This also demonstrates to the fine folks at MGM (teeheehee, we’re working with the company that makes Bond movies…just thought of that!) that this is a viable business model and that they should do this again with us in the future. If this works for them, selling them our next grand experiment will be a lot easier! The next planned screening is February 1st 2007 in London England! I’m thinking that I may put the tickets on Ebay and selling them that way. It was just such a fuss for the L.A. screening with all the RSVP’ing and the junk mail filters and all! We’re considering having some nice gold on white “Willy Wonka” style tickets printed - serial numbers and all. Kate and I could sign them, so you’ll get a one-of-a-kind memento, along with the screening itself…that said the cost of renting theatres in London is ridiculous! I don’t know how they stay in business! Poor Jane is frantically trying to find the right size venue, in a good location that isn’t going to break the bank!
Back to L.A… It was so exhilarating to have that theatre full of people. It really made the whole thing come alive. I have never enjoyed an audience reaction more than at that screening. We ended up with standing room only for 240 people in a 220 seat theatre! All that for a hastily organized screening that had been self-promoted in the span of two weeks, entirely online. I was so impressed with Jane! I actually tried to talk her out of the screening because I didn’t think we had enough time to get it all together… I was wrong. This, by the way, is something that Jane hears a lot from me.
“A Dog’s Breakfast” started playing and I forgot that the sound was only coming out of one central speaker. I forgot that I was nervous to the point of puddle and I forgot all the work we’d done to make this thing happen. People laughed. They all laughed! They all laughed at all of the right times! I can’t tell you how amazing it feels to watch people enjoying something that you’ve put so much time and energy and pain and joy into making. Not to mention all the family, friends and pets! I’m watching people I’ve never met in my life (okay I met most of them outside on the way in, but you know what I’m babbling about) getting the jokes and laughing and losing themselves in a little film we made. I was also so proud to see everyone’s reactions to our fabulous cast. Cheers for Paul when he first shows up, great laughs and groans of sympathy for Kate as she struggles to be sister to the manic Patrick - then there was Chris Judge! He brought the house down as the dashingly desperate date-er. That man has so much presence it’s not fair! You can’t take your eyes off him. That, and he just makes me laugh! I couldn’t have wished for better experience! Did I mention that I want to be a filmmaker when I grow up? ;-)
Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time for Q&As after the screening. The first question was about the soundtrack; if and when it would be available. I’ll just point out here that Tim Williams is a musical God! The soundtrack for this film is just perfection! Tim, having seen a rough (very rough) cut of the film, somehow crawled into my head and turned the jumbled mess of ideas and inspirations into the perfect soundtrack. Music can make or break a film. Tim Williams deserves a huge part of the credit in making “A Dog’s Breakfast” such an enjoyable experience. Tim could make Pamella Anderson look like Meryl Streep…hmm, that’s no not quite what I was going for… She’d still look like Pamella Anderson but she’d have the Meryl Streep acting chops…maybe Charlize Theron then? Is Charlize still going out with the grumpy poser boy? Tim could make him look like a good actor too, though he’d have his work cut out for him! I think I’ll move on.
After a few thank-you’s and a couple more questions, I went outside and hung out in front of the theatre. That way, I was able to do a little more of a meet and greet out there. People really seemed to like the film, even people who had obviously come out of duty. My favourite comments came from siblings, or parents, or spouses of people, who had dragged them there. I mean, these are people that didn’t want to be there in the first place, but there they were. They seemed so relieved to be able to tell me that they ended up enjoying the film as much as those that brought ‘em! There were representatives from SciFi and MGM in attendance, even though they had already seen a screener DVD! I feel really lucky to be working with such a supportive group of people. I can’t say enough about all of them. MGM have been amazing about working with us on the distribution side of things, and SciFi have not only been great at getting the word out, they… well, they’ll be the subject of a whole new “News” entry, any day now! ;-)
I would be terribly remiss if I didn’t thank each and every one of you that begged, borrowed or stole your way into the screening. People drove in from as far as my cold old home Ontario – Australia even! (I’m hoping they didn’t drive) Thank you all for your support in coming down and watching us play! Also, thanks to everyone who has requested a screening. I look forward to seeing you all at a theatre near you “reel” soon!
Cheers,
D!

Written by kaniku on 2007-01-16 16:38:20 It's a good thing I adore you David. Anyone else talking smack about Stuart Townsend would get, well, a smack. To make it up to me, I think that I should get a private screening. I hate going to the theatre. Much nicer to sit about in your pjs and watch it all on DVD. | Written by kaniku on 2007-01-16 16:38:00 It's a good thing I adore you David. Oh bugger indeed!! Good luck and better sound! | Stopping right here. Written by Icarus on 2007-01-15 04:19:45 Ronin is brilliant, gritty, white-knuckle action. If Casino Royale's anything like it... okay, up until five seconds ago I wasn't planning on seeing it. All right, you've sold me. *back to part three* | I do hate to admit it but... Written by Dew on 2007-01-14 19:19:42 yes Daniel Craig made a good Bond. But I'm personally highly biased towards three of the other men who have taken on that role. As long as you remember it's a whole new telling of those tales it's great. And again I'm stuck wishing I had the means to fly out to a screening. How about one in Seattle? Seattle's nice. We've even got a little snow right now. | Australian Screening? Written by FallenFromGrace on 2007-01-14 08:23:08 Please bring a screening here!! So glad that the night worked out ^^ | So happy for you, David! Written by crazymom on 2007-01-13 14:27:09 I'm so glad to hear that you are enjoying the response to the movie. That must feel wonderful! | Happy for you! Written by crazymom on 2007-01-13 11:42:44 It's great to hear how much YOU enjoyed the screening and the reactions. We (even those of us who haven't seen it yet) are thrilled about the movie, so it's good to know you are getting so much out of it as well. | Written by Kady on 2007-01-13 10:11:28 Davy-babes, why don't you just have one in liverpool, y'know, with it being the capital of culture? | Written by shelsfc on 2007-01-13 04:46:01 Really looking forward to Feb 1 :D I already have my flight & hotel booked...I just hope I get a ticket now!! Love the idea of the Willy Wonka tickets! And I couldn't agree more about Daniel Craig, he's an absolutely fantastic Bond! | London Screening Written by J Leigh on 2007-01-13 00:27:41 Wow, what are the chances? I live in Wisconsin but I'm going to be in London January through May. But I don't use Ebay or have an account there. Is there an alternative way I could buy a ticket? Pweeze? | Congratulations on your successful partn Written by lwinrich on 2007-01-12 17:57:12 Rhode Island is a long way from you. We would be at a screening if we could drive there, but you aren't here to help speed up our travel time and it is a bit of a drive. Looking forward to your new show, "Starcrossed," and congratulations on your recent engagement. Thanks for the smiles and laughs you allow my teenagers and me to share. April is SO long away, but once the kids are done with their exams - we can at least look forward to watching DVD's and reruns again. | London London London! It is always nice to here those sorts things from the other side as it were. I hope everything works out with the London screening. However you decide to do the tickets I will make every effort to be there. | Written by Assilem on 2007-01-11 21:23:28 You know what you could do instead of "selling" tickets. Do the "donation" thing, because well, all us Squirrel puppets will give tons of monies to your cause. | Written by GentleZephyr on 2007-01-11 20:27:55 I'm with you on the whole cinematic experience thing. I don't see a film at the theatre unless it's a big action film or some kind of event. And ebay tickets sounds like a great idea. Just make sure that you sell them in pairs, so we can all bring a friend! | Nice Written by Netty on 2007-01-11 01:35:09 Great to hear from you again D. Sounds like the screening was fabulous. Wish i was there. I really hope you come to Australia soon. Cairns to be specific. Which is Far North Queensland, Queensland. So please please come to Cairns David! Pretty Please with a cherry on top and chocolate sauce and sprinkles! Rainbow coloured sprinkles hehe I hope you dont put tickets on Ebay. It would be easier for you yes but because of all the people that are aure to see the movie the prices will go up in up. It would be better is there was a set price. Cheers Annette | Written by unspokenlonging on 2007-01-10 23:50:05 No thank you David. Written by AylaMc on 2007-01-10 19:35:17 Oh, I wish I could have been there to experience it with you and everyone else. From your recount, it seems like it was a real blast. And just to reiterate... Halifax could use a screening, eh? Or at least, somewhere in Canada - even if I can't make it, Canadians who can't leave the country need to see this film!!! | After midnight in Germany ... Written by Amy_McKay on 2007-01-10 17:52:55 So many words to read!! The screening sounds like a wonderful event!! I am in London next day, after the schedule day! Written by Ivan on 2007-01-10 13:32:19 I'd like to know how much is the ticket cost? | Re:Ticketing Idea Written by ZoniDuck on 2007-01-10 12:33:02 I emailed Brown Paper Tickets to ask about Canada and Europe, and they advised me that they do operate in Canada, but not in Europe yet. So you could use them for any US or Canadian screenings if you wanted. | Ticketing Idea Written by ZoniDuck on 2007-01-10 12:19:13 Thanks for sticking with this recap to the end, D. I really enjoyed reading about your experience, especially what you thought while watching ADB with an audience. Regarding tickets, this won't help for London, or any screenings in Canada, but for anything else you do in the US, I'd recommend Brown Paper Tickets. I bought tickets through them for a Phoenix Film Society screening of Bobby, and they were very easy to use. The fees are very low ($1.25 US per $10 ticket for the screening I went to), and you wouldn't have to pay any eBay or PayPal fees. Also, I agree with you about Casino Royale. I am not a Bond fan at all, but I went to see it with my Dad, and we both loved it. I would happily pay to see it in a theater again, and that's saying something. Best of luck on the London screening. I hope you'll find a suitable theater. Personally, I wouldn't have any problem paying for a ticket to see ADB. From what I've heard, it's well worth the ticket price, whatever that price might be. | Written by Shawna on 2007-01-10 12:09:24 Ebay tickets? I really hope you decide not to do that. Sure, it's a great idea on your end; they'll probably go for quite a deal more than movie tickets normally do, but it's...well, it's bad for me. Selfish, yes, but I'm just saying that your less wealthy fans (like those of us who have to wait until a screening is within reasonable driving distance) will likely get quickly outbid by those with more expendable currency. Certainly, I can see that, given the small number of screenings you'll be able to do, you'll want to make as much money on them as possible, but...aw, heck, I'm just worried that you'll finally have a screening in Vancouver or Seattle and I won't be able to go because I can't afford the $50+ ticket. Not that I'm expecting them to continue to be free, but I'd prefer it if tickets were sold at a set price. | London Cinemas Written by zedpm on 2007-01-10 10:23:24 Just had a look at my old degree notes, and it seems most of my lecturers recommended putting on any screenings at the Prince Charles Cinema - now I don't know if it is suitable in any way, other than it's just off Leicester Square and it's pretty awesome, but just a thought for you!
| TEASE Written by crazy4dh on 2007-01-10 09:38:37 You are such a tease!!!! How does Jane stand you? Just kidding. The teasing just makes us want more of you. Congrats on the success of your film and with Jane saying YES. We all say she's so lucky, but it is obvious that you feel that you are the lucky one. Still holding out for a screening near Kentucky. And yes paying for tickets is just fine how else do you make a profit and pay everyone who helped out? Waiting anxiously for more "news" and knowing you a few days will drag out as long as you think you can keep us on tether hooks! Nice to know that you like action as well as sci fi. I loved Bourne Identity. | France...David... France Written by Kev1305 on 2007-01-10 09:30:00 Great report David ! I did enjoy the reading...I like when you write things... you should write movies you know ? Seriously, now I can't wait any longer to see the movie.. PLEASE COME IN FRANCE ! In london you'll be at only 1h30 from the theater I requested ! | Written by ariana on 2007-01-10 07:22:27 I really wish i could have been there but thanks so much for the report. I have to say that i completely agree about Bond. I can't wait for the dvd. I could watch that movie over and over again. Although i've kinda been to see it three times already. *sheepish*
| Quick comment cos I'm going out now Written by 11nine73 on 2007-01-10 06:23:00 "So, if you’re going to get me, or any other tech-friendly shut-in to the movies, you’ve got to make it a spectacle and you’ve got to make it a social event." A what now? A social event? No, you're going to have to remind me as to what one of those is. "Daniel Craig was 007 the way 007 was meant to be." *throws things at you* NOOO!!! No, no, no. You're so wrong, you could't be wronger. "The next planned screening is February 1st 2007 in London England!" I hate you! *cries* Not really, but I'll miss it. Going back to the whole social event thing, looks like I'll be waiting for the DVD - there IS going to be a DVD right?!! - and sit at home on my own. Sad now. No hugs, Helen x | Blast! Written by PB_Gal on 2007-01-10 05:55:19 sounds like you had one. Unfortunately I'm from a part of Australia that could fly, ship OR drive to LA, but hearing all the reviews from everyone only makes me want to see it even more. I love that you're trying to say thanks to the fans for supportind ADB but, yep you've gotta make a living (other than what SGA is paying ya!!!!). Maybe for the die hard fans, have the first 10-20 tix free or at a smaller charge! Anyway If one Aussie was able to make it to LA, how about you guys comming down and hearing all our Aussie Accents... I know all you yanks/Canadians love our accent! | Written by Catsitter on 2007-01-10 05:49:46 It sounds as though it was great. I wish I could have been there! I would certainly expect to pay for a ticket to a screening, though I've never bought from EBay. You wouldn't be auctioning them, would you? And sorry to keep harping on about Nottingham, but you can book a film screening for a Sunday afternoon at the Broadway Media Centre there for the cost of 150 British pounds, which includes 30 tickets. Bargain, or what? | Written by casey on 2007-01-10 05:18:18 Hey David, How interesting your description of your thoughts and emotions. I'd be nervous too given that it's your pet project and you and Jane and lots of others have put so much into it. I would love to pay to attend the screening of your movie in London! I was actually wondering how you could keep giving free screenings when you first announced a possible screening. The only problem is that well, I'm arriving in London on the 1st ...in the evening, so I will probably miss the show! Still, I can't believe that it's 3 weeks away. I am going to Europe primarily for a holiday and to visit family there (I'm from Sydney by the way) and the con is incidental to my holiday. Take care and let us know about the movie stuff. Give Jane a hand shake from me for being such a trooper... I hope she finds something! | Written by SeiyaTheLeaper on 2007-01-10 05:03:40 Ohhhhh.... tickets on Ebay... now I'm worried... I hope there'll be a lot on sale, 'cause now I'm REALLY REALLY worried I might not get a ticket!! Paying is not a problem, the price isn't a problem (I can go without eating a day or two), as long as my friends and I are ale to get a ticket. *sets up camp in front of the PC, open on the eBay webpage* | Written by Zerocool on 2007-01-10 04:45:21 Selling tickets on ebay is fine. Im sure most people here understand that London is very expensive. But I am worried that time is running out and we wouldn't get the tickets in time and that I would be outbid to get them (hopefully you would go the 'buy Now route). I loved Casino Royale But I thought the Polka scene in the middle could have been cut in half. If you are like me and don't understand gambling the drama was lost. | oops! But i really hope i get a ticket!!! Havent actually seen casino royal, but the after show party (which was actually a day later) after the london premier was in Chester (where im at university), so we got to see all the vip's, limos crowding the streets, and david craig himself. Written by Aten on 2007-01-09 22:26:01 Sorry. That I couldn't resist. To paraphrase a well-known singer (I feel a tad shy about mentioning her name), What've reels got to do with it? Y'know, DVD release alone sounds wonderful to me. Here we have a movie that everyone has to see multiple times in order to take in all the brilliant humor. I remember missing a few jokes in the theater because I couldn't hear over the laughter! It's like a great line I read once about such a film: "I've seen it from beginning to end so many times, but still not all the way through!" Stil, I feel that I should be thanking you. I had an incomparably fantastic time at the screening (despite the sparse Q&A session. No specific questions entered my mind, anyhow, so gleaning the info from others' questions was just fine for me). I think the best part was, truly, sharing in the laughter (among other reactions) with my fellows. Of course, AFTER the movie was over, it's a no-brainer to tell what my favorite part was. There. Written by watcher652 on 2007-01-09 19:15:37 I hope some of that film your friend Vincenzo is recording with that very fine camera makes onto the dvd. | You tease! Written by watcher652 on 2007-01-09 18:28:16 ...and SciFi have not only been great at getting the word out, they... well, they’ll be the subject of a whole new "News" entry, any day now! ;-) What, what, what?! You tease, you! Thanks for the rest of the LA report. It's wonderful that the audience got what you were doing and you got to see them laugh and enjoy themselves. Thanks also for letting us know you still plan to take the movie around. DVD movies are fun at home. You don't get all the noisy whispers or that person kicking your chair, or your feet sticking to the floor (at least not in my house). But there's nothing like the shared experience of a group of people laughing or sniffling or gasping at something they see larger than life on a big, big screen. I hope you'll be able to bring your movie to my neck of the woods. And (no spoiler comment here), that line from The Ark? So David! Did you throw that in or was that written that way?
| Can't wait to see it. Written by Mercury973 on 2007-01-09 18:09:07 Any truth to the rumor goin 'round that ADB will be released on iTunes? Or a screening in Vancouver? Say, March-ish? | LONDON BABY YEAH! Written by angiebaby on 2007-01-09 17:42:00 Nice to know you had a great time. Can't wait for Feb 1st I have booked the extra day off my work just in case I have to go to london a day early | Written by Kim on 2007-01-09 17:07:23 Ahh, you're killing me with this london screening, hope you guys get something sorted without too much more stress. And if it's meant to be, I'll get the extra time off work (and if it's not, I won't) Thanks for the update on L.A! Kx (anticipates new news) | Written by s_aurius on 2007-01-09 17:04:20 Sounds like an absolutely wonderful time all around! I definitely wouldn't mind paying an admission fee to watch the movie. I'd even be willing to pay higher than the average ticket price. I can't wait to hear what this new news is going to be. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later. Thanks for taking time to write up this report! | Written by rosiewook on 2007-01-09 16:55:59 Just like being there! Those of us stuck here for the February 1st viewing would most definitely appreciate another blow-by-blow from your perspective on that one, too. As for tickets, I'd be surprised if you didn't charge, at this point. The people will come (along with many squirrels). Let us know when you start sales and we shall spread the word! (And I'm so willing to buy tickets for the screening you're going to do in Atlanta. ::does Jedi mind trick: | London Screening Written by alineelizabeth on 2007-01-09 16:40:31 I think it's brilliant that you're coming across to the UK. Shame it's not Scotland but I'll definately fly down to see the film. The trailer looks really good and I can't wait to see it no matter what the cost. | GOLDEN TICKET Written by Wabit on 2007-01-09 16:36:57 Feb 1st here we come Will the squirrel's get a heads up first David??? Mmmmmm golden ticket, good excuse to eat loads of chocolate to me. | ADB Screening :) Written by borgteddy on 2007-01-09 16:29:28 Whoohoo to a London screening. I'm working on changing my flight so I can be there for it. Selling tickets on eBay sounds great too. Will we get some warning before they're put online for auction? And is it possible to buy more then 1 ticket, since I'll have to buy one for my friend as well. | Written by Muffin on 2007-01-09 16:10:42 Great report David, a real enjoyable read just wish I could have got out there. *Fingers crossed* The London Screening goes ahead will definately be there. Buying tickets on ebay sounds good! :D :D | Coolies Written by Annie on 2007-01-09 16:09:46 Thanks ever so much for the final part of this update, it sounds like you all had a brilliant time that night. Congratulations to everyone involved on how brilliantly the evening went. That said, I can't wait for 01 February and the screening in London. I decided as soon as you fist mentioned it that I was going, and yes I'm draggin my mate Saz along with me, and paying to get in wouldn't phase me a bit. I got money for Christmas, and will be getting money for my birthday, ready for Pegasus 2 so have some for the screening as well. And I totally agree with you about Casino Royale - how cool is that film. Can't wait for it to come out on DVD so I can watch it again. I thought that Timothy Dalton had done a great job of taking the film Bond back to being what the book Bond was - then I saw Daniel Craig. Boy did he shut up all the people who had said he wasn't right for the part. |
