In my element!
In my element!
And now part two of the nerd’s words for L.A. Screening 2006 (about time I know!)

Let’s start this blog entry with a nice little film geek freak out! We had a bit of a technical glitch with our screening… I would say it was a doozie (I don’t know how you spell “Doozie”, but boy do I like the sound of it…even if it is a doozie of a word to spell)

Jane and I had wanted to do a “quality control” test to make sure of the film was going to run properly in the theatre. We tried to be good, organized and sort it out the day we arrived, but we just couldn’t coordinate it with the theatre. So we get there on the day, keep in mind that this is an hour before we screen the film, and they show us the “test”. It looked fantastic, because the West Side Pavilion Theatre has an HD deck. (Non-film nerds can skip the next paragraph if you want to skip my HD sermon)

I know that there are still a lot of film purists out there who say “film is far superior.” Well, I’m not ashamed to say that I love HD. I may even prefer it! The geek side of me can’t stand the thought of shooting something using a chemical process and then having to digitize the thing. After you edit the film, digitally, you are then supposed to go back to those little strips of film and cut that footage together with some sort of big, ugly, not to mention expensive, machine.?! No nerd worth their flash drive would go for that! Add to this the cost of “prints” for screening in most theatres, and you’ve got ridiculous. With film, quality gets worse with every time that celluloid passes through the projector. If you want to see a “film” film in all it’s glory, see it opening weekend, or you are going to be seeing scratches. Film is far too inefficient for the geek side of me. I love that the shots you pull out of that HD camera are easily copied and manipulated at exactly the same resolution as the original (and digital doesn’t scratch and deteriorate with handling.) With film you need to keep in mind that at the end of the day you actually have to process all that brilliant footage that you’ve just shot. That can add up pretty quickly. With HD you just shoot. That said, we actually made sure to keep our shooting ratio (the number of times we filmed each shot to the number of shots) down to a minimum. With a 14 day shoot, we needed to keep our debut puppy moving.

I think I’ve covered the loving HD theme… for now.

The problem with our impending screening was the sound! I’m standing at the back of the theatre and the sound is only coming through the front center speaker! We have created this beautiful (expensive) stereo surround mix for “A Dog’s Breakfast”. Tim Williams, our musical genius composer, has written, performed and recorded this spectacular soundtrack for the film. He was coming tonight to see it in a real theatre to get the full effect. We were now about to be present “A Dog’s Breakfast” in glorious AM radio quality MONO!? It sounded awful, all muddy and uneven. I was tearing my hair out, not that there’s much to tear at these days! The theatre was very sweet about it all, but they still couldn’t fix the problem. I had resigned myself to making an announcement and apologizing to everyone about how lousy it was going to sound. Luckily I have friends (though few will admit to it. Let me name names! William Phillips (Get Down, Foolproof) and Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Cypher, Nothing), both extraordinary filmmakers and Andrew Miller who wrote and starred in Nothing, all said forget about it (but not in Jane’s words). They figured that pointing out the problem before the screening just meant that people were going to be looking (or listening) for it the whole time. Given the benefit of a few months and I’d say they were right, but at the time I was wild-eyed manic! I was ready to start giving everyone in line their money back, which would have been foolish, since the screening was free. I ended up keeping my trap shut, though I was dying to scream out every time dialogue or neat little sound effect got lost in front speaker limbo. For all of you out there that saw the screening, we apologize for the technical difficulties.

To calm down and take my mind off things I thought I would pop out and say hello to the early arrivals. The problem was that little line of 30 people (that I was worried about 10 minutes ago!) was now hundreds of people long. Try as I might, I just couldn’t get a proper “hi” to everyone without turning our 7:30 screening into a midnight madness one. I think I managed to get to the end of the line and get a few chats and signatures and photos in there before I got dragged back to the theatre. Anyone who felt they didn’t get quality time, you’ll just have to come back and we’ll do it again…in stereo, thank you very much! Jack Nicholson once said that actors meet more people in one year than most people do in a lifetime… I know that I’m not going to recognize every one of you right away, so please don’t take offense and certainly feel free to remind me, so we can have a real chat!

I guess this is going to have to be a screening trilogy! Stay Tuned!

Verbose D!

I just had to express my sympathy. On the bright side, your glitch led to an entertaining story. I laughed when I read your account (sorry), as it reminded me of being at DancesWithFilms in July. My first film, at an actual Hollywood premiere. The title sequence for "Sixes and the One Eyed King" rolls. Look, there's my name on the big screen. Me! What a dream come true! The first tense scene. Er, wait ... the actors' lips aren't matching the words. Seconds become agonizingly long as I watch what looked like a foreign film poorly dubbed in English. It turns out that the sound was out of sync by a few frames when it was moved from the hard drive to the Beta SP tape. Fortunately, we were at a hotel just a couple of blocks away. The director raced there to get the Digi Beta tapes. They made the switch and continued the movie. I can laugh about it ... now. It didn't seem to hurt us either with the audience or the reviewers, fortunately. I know what you mean about the amazing feeling of seeing an audience enjoy and respond to something you've created. I knew about it beforehand, but I didn't really KNOW it until I experienced it. Addictive.

Wish I'd been there to appreciate "A Dog's Breakfast." I look forward to seeing it.

I am glad I sat in the front. Otherwise I would have thought I was going deaf.

Getting to talk to Vincenzo Natali about the existentialism in Nothing was amazing.

You want me crying, don't you? Even beging?
Ok, then *fall on her knees* Please, oh, please, pleasepleaseplease...
Are we having a screening here?
I'm from Argentina and, shees! looks like we never get the good stuff *cry helplessly*
Congratulations, David, and thank you for lets us know how are the thing on the other side =D
*goes to read more fan reviews*

Your sound problem? I had the same one with a show I was doing; ironically its a simple fix once you stop trying to tear you hair out and keeping the director sane! (I am a Geek, I know more about sound and lighting than a 19 year old should!)

You should still do a Canadain Screeeningg *hint*PRINCE GEORGE*hint* and I'll get you a discount on the techy people of the Theatre Hall :P
the great digital debate

You know there are shlews of film makers & photographers would would stand on either side of the line and tout that one is better over the other.

Me? I swing both ways, lol. I love my digital camera & the instant gratification of images *right now* but since I don't have uber fundage, I don't have the tricked out high-end model, so for tricker shots I have to go to the 35mm SLR.

I'm sure I could go on at length of the pros & cons of both (yah, I'm a geek :grin ), but I won't do that here.

Can't wait to see the film. Perhaps a screening at DragonCon? :) I know there's a few of us minions that would love to see it there. And you! :p

I want a screening in the south-eastern part of the US.

No biggie, I say. A tech glitch is a tech glitch and if people are going to throw a fit over a tech glitch during a preview movie they were invited to view for free, then they should just not go at all. *sigh*

Anyhoo, from what I've been hearing--no harm done at any rate. Hope the next tech glitch happens here in good old (cold) Minnesota. :D

Yeah, I can definitely see why HD would be preferable. It's the wave of the future...as they say.

Why didn't you mention about those friends of yours coming before the screening? I daresay Vincenzo and Andrew have fans amongst the squirrels (myself included) who would factor such things into the "can I really make it?" equation.
Written by AylaMc on 2007-01-04 07:02:03
well, it sounds like nobody really minds that the sound wasn't up to par - who's par, anyway? what is this? movie golf? - and like they're all willing to forgive you this tresspass.

Unfortunately, if you don't bring this baby to Canada soon*cough*Halifax*cough*, I'll be forced to take desperate measures.

I do hope you're enjoying the New Year, my best to you and yours. :) Give Mars a pat for me. [he probably gets more attantion than you these days, ;P]
Written by skeeter18 on 2007-01-04 01:32:45
I just wanna say:

David, you rock! :grin

And HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Let me just say...
Written by Aten on 2007-01-03 22:58:05
The sound still came across great from my fifth-row vantage point. I usually get completely overwhelmed in movie theaters when the sound gets too intense (seriously, the base waves have vibrated my entire body on occasion!). I noticed nothing wrong. In fact, it was perfect, in my humble opinion. Perfect for someone like me, that is, and rarely do I run across others that remind me of myself. At least in real life I don't...

Also, the HD-ness was amazing. There was one scene that looked almost three-dimensional! I'm not kidding when I say that my jaw just about dropped open involuntarily. :grin

Another L.A. screening? My heart rate accelerates at the thought. No, I really am checking it. Am I shaking now, too? Yes, yes I am. ;)

From one wordy person to another, let me just say: I still "loved it to pieces".
congratulations and *utter greediness*
Written by Merrily on 2007-01-03 20:50:00
Speaking as someone who's happily attended 7AM screenings at the TO film festival because Don Coscarelli might be speaking to the audience-- I'm certain, even though I wasn't there, that no-one noticed the sound, because they were too busy thinking you were charming for wanting to meet the attendees. And also thinking, "free!"

AND, speaking of not having been there (this is the *utter greediness* part), when might yer film have a showing in Toronto? (Or did it already? I am often far out of the loop. However, Google can't confirm or deny, so I'm asking.)

The Royal on College St @ Grace has just got new ownership and a facelift and seems interested and willing to show indie films. Also, I'd totally pay to go. Sic Kate on them, yo! (Sources say she's tenacious and gets shit done.) The hometown kids want to see yer work in glorious Cinema Size.

Take care, David. And Jane. And Dog. Happy New Year!
It was fine!
Written by Astrumporta on 2007-01-03 19:31:56
The HD was so pretty, I honestly did not notice a problem with the sound at all, which makes me feel all superficial and inadequate as a film goer. I was up in the front, but it sounded fine to me. I heard the pills crunching under your feet, for sure!

I complete relate to why you love HD. Why go from analog to digital and back when you don't have to!

As to your time in line, you were way more generous than any of us expected. Don't promise more, or you're going to end up having to visit each and every one of us at our homes for dinner. It could get out of hand :)

Thank you for writing this second part. It's so great to be able to hear more about the screening from your point of view.
I don't think anyone noticed the sound issue. All the reports I've read about the screening have been very positive.
I can't wait for your next report about the screening! :)
Written by MdGateFan on 2007-01-03 17:40:13
Glad to hear (read?) that even with the glitch everything went well.

And your friends are/were right. Pointing out something like that would have drawn attention to it.

I hope that all goes well with the screening...

"Don't sweet the small stuff" they say. It sounds like it was a success anyway despit minor gliches :grin I can't wait to see ADB in southern Ontario :roll (patience I have). Here's to the new year 2007 DH--the year of the squirels. I hope it's a good one ;)
Wish I could Have been there!

Darn, sounds like it must have been a great time! Too bad I live way out here on the east coast (of Canada), maybe I'll eventually be able to pick the movie up on DVD :sigh

I would have loved to meet you in person or even see you in real life D, but I just couldn't make it.

Perhaps another time :)
Written by sueKay on 2007-01-03 12:05:51
I'd loved to have seen the movie in LA regardless of the sound problems...maybe someday the film will make it to Glasgow? :grin

I love HD! We've got HD cameras at work, and whenever anyone comes in to have a look at the professional ones, we always keep them out to take some footage and then hook them up to the HD TV we've got in store. Obviously they're not a patch on the ones used in the TV industry, but they're pretty cool all the same!
Woulda shoulda coulda
Written by Jan on 2007-01-03 11:35:16
I'm sure I WOULD have loved the movie despite any sound difficulties, if only I'd been able to be there and see it.

** heavy melodramatic sigh **

Seriously, though, everyone who went to the screening loved the movie, and have done nothing but sing exclamation-point-laden praises ever since. Ya done good.
HD
Written by mrskorber on 2007-01-03 10:40:45
My husband is a digital compositor in Vancouver and HD has defnitely changed his work over the last few years. I suspect you and he would have long, rambling discourses of praise about this sort of schtuff. Beyond that, from what I've heard about the screening? People loved it, sound or no.

Happy New Year!

I'm realy sorry hear about sound too, but I think you shouldn't worry about It, I completely sure everything will be alright.
And I can't understand "geek" - what that mean?
Happy New Year for David H. and all your's family, I wish you a lot of happiness in New Year.
I hope to see you soon.
P.S. I'm sorry about my mistakes.

You know, stuff like the speaker thing happens hun. You just have to accept that you can't control everything

Is the real reason you love HD that it's you initals backwards though? *grins*

I forgot to add my wishes for a Happy New Year to my last comment, for which I humbly apologise. I was a tad upset by the prospect of missing the UK screening.

So... HAPPY NEW YEAR :grin

SYMPATHY GALORE
Written by crazy4dh on 2007-01-03 07:54:09
I sympathize completely. When things go wrong I completely FREAK. I just know that the whole event will bomb, but it usually isn't as bad in reality as it was in my fertile imagination.

From what I've read the screening was a success and everyone was thrilled with whatever amount of time they got with you. I know I'd be thrilled just to say hi and shake hands on a night like that 'cause everyone realizes you have so much going on.

Still hoping for a screening anywhere near the vicinity of KENTUCKY. The list of bribes growing - Fudge, homemade cheesecake, bowing minion playing gopher for the day,.....
Written by rosiewook on 2007-01-03 05:16:06
You're a perfectionist? Who'da thunk it? :p

I am totally with you on the HD thing. Being a Star Wars geek, I was sold all the way when LFL put out their film in glorious HD. Ever since then, I totally prefer it. It really puts you right there in reality. (Well, as real as Star Wars ever gets.)

So funny to read about the event from the other side. Every review I've read has positively glowed about it.

My only concern now is that if everyone was laughing too much when the sound was crappy, what will they do when they can hear everything?!
The trailer
Written by Orlane on 2007-01-03 04:44:10
The trailer of a dog's breakfast is very very very very funny!! The best moment is when you scream. Good job! I hope i will (I'd?) can see this movie in France soon.
Excuse me for my english!

Yey for big, bouncy, beautiful HD!
I hope it comes out on HDDVD! Hell I wish Stargate would come out on HDDVD, It does get broadcast in the UK in HD. Im not sure if theyre holding out and waiting to see if Blu-Ray might win.
Anyway people I meet who are purists are silly linear editing types who cling to it I guess because their jobs depend on it...they will come round to it!
As for the sound pah!
The Brits do it better :grin
Possible Oz screenings...

definately willing to see it in Mono if that's how fate decrees! :-)
Sound problem?
Written by Annie on 2007-01-03 01:52:03
In all the reviews I've read about the LA screening, none of them have mentioned there was a problem with the sound so it must have still sounded great - even if it wasn't up where you had hoped it will be.
Written by Erynn on 2007-01-03 01:48:54
I wish I'd been in LA, sound difficulties notwithstanding. Hope you had fabulous holidays, and happy new year!
You are right
Written by dutch eowyn on 2007-01-03 01:24:15
Yes. Indeed HD is beautiful and practical for all the reasons you mention. But I can't help but feel an irrational love for film. I work in a movie theatre, and I love the sound and smell of those solid looking machines, with the fragile film roling over all those pulleys and spools. Film is big and clumsy and bloody heavy, but what can I say, the projector room is my favorite place in the world.
More screenings part 2
Written by Mercury973 on 2007-01-02 23:44:02
Ay ay ay- where's the edit button?

I know a bunch of us signed up for screenings, but, are there any plans for having another screening? (other than London).
Is it dependent on how many people from a certain city signed up?

I can't wait to see it.
More screenings?

That's too bad about the sound, but I bet it was still great!!

hiya david,

Interesting to read all these processes. I wasn't at the screening, living all the way here in Oz and I doubt i'll be in London on time, should there be a screening even if I am going to be there on 1st Feb.

I like the process that you took and I admire your dedication and commitment to all.

Great decision on the high Def., it's the best way to view anything. Thanks for the update and the glimpse of behind-the-scenes action, as gut-wrenching as it sounds to have been.

I'm sure, even with sound problems, it was still an awesome movie viewing David and I can't wait to see it fully, instead of clips :sigh
Coming to Calgary soon? :grin
If not I could always hunt you down on set in Burnaby {In spring} and bug you until you do a showing for poor lil moi :)

I was just wondering today what happened to that "second" part--thanks!
Written by Becky S. on 2007-01-02 21:49:16
Thanks for part two David. It's always good to hear what was happening from the "other" side of things. I'm sorry to hear you had a sound situation, but your friends were right - if you had mentioned it, then everyone would have been listening for it. From what I've read about the screening, everyone on the fan side was pretty darn happy with how things turned out and in time you will have a chance to meet with all those you didn't get to spend enough time with.

2007 will be a great year for you. Promise.
