We're working hard at getting Tim William's brilliant "A Dog's Breakfast" soundtrack available on iTunes. A few hurdles to overcome, but we'll get there!
Babies are fast approaching. Jane and I have been building cribs and furniture and reading stroller and car-seat manuals. We've gone with the Orbit Baby System
. I'm incredibly impressed thus far. It's really a dGeek daddy's dream come true...baby nerdware. The system literally just unfolds out of the box! All I had to do was pop two wheels into holes at the front! It's like transporting your child in a transformer! Jane and I spent hours online and in baby stores researching car seats and stroller systems and the most valuable information came from the parent blogs. So, I figure I better help give some back with some thoughts of our own. Jane and I got the car-seat base installed in about five minutes, and I don't have any concerns about having to move it to other cars with this new LATCH system. I think most newer cars have it and it's a lifesaver (pardon the pun). Not only does it make sure the baby is perfectly secured, it's a cinch to install. The main reason we bought Orbit baby was because it allows you to take the seat directly off the stroller and place it in the car at any angle. I didn't fancy having to lug all that weight around while trying to get the seat to snap into the sweet spot. You just drop it on the ring facing any-which-way and just spin it into place. Sweet! Right now, all I've been using the stroller for is wheeling around the house scaring Mars...but it does do a great job of that too;-)
"A Dog's Breakfast" DVD's are also winging their way ever closer. Can't wait to see our puppy on DVD shelves around the nation. The U.K. should be seeing the hound on DVD in early 2008 and I'll keep you posted on any news for those of you "international-ites". The Vancouver Film School has put together a screening of "A Dog's Breakfast", with a bit of a film-nerd chat about making movies, on Saturday September 8th at 4pm. Not sure if you have to be a student or not, but I'm sure you'll figure it out.
Shooting Stargate Atlantis Back in the wilds of British Columbia tomorrow with bugs, allergies and genii...not to mention spoiled princesses and growling beasts! What more could a guy wish for!?
Cheers,

Harry Potter Written by Mirth on 2007-09-14 08:59:34 I did the same with Harry Potter. Read all 6 books again so I would not miss a thing in book 7. Cant decide if I prefer The Order of the Pheonix or Half Blood Prince. Wanted to read it fast to know what happens but wanted to read it slow to savour it. Cant believe its over. Hopefully she will become bankrupt and we will have more. (selfish girl in the corner..that'll be me). |
Owl Impression...erm Written by Mirth on 2007-09-14 08:51:10 I have only just seen the Owl impression and I have to say I think it looked more like a very good impression of the action man my brother had when I was little that you moved the eyes with a switch on the back of the head. Still does not detract from the fact I think your great! Little ball of fun. |

Written by Zerocool on 2007-09-07 04:33:52 Could it be? you're shooting in a forrest once again!? oddly enough I've been checking out the 'mamas and papas' baby systems myself. Theyve come along way since my bulky old pram. Having said that babies seem to have a huge amount of accessories for such tiny things. No wonder the word want to drive 4x4's I'm so excited for you. |
Written by mackenziesmomma on 2007-09-07 04:15:51 Sheesh, I only DREAM about baby nerdware like that, and I spend all my time researching the stuff even though my little one doesn't fit into those things anymore(she's 18 months 12.15 kilos and 32 inches tall). I wish you guys luck with the little geek! |
Orca Whales and Owls Written by OatmealFairy on 2007-09-06 23:39:23 I wanted to say that I absolutely love you for your Hogwarts comment about the owl spotting. But I'm also here to deliver a message from my brother (23, closet geek with bad taste, he's not a fan of yours) , "I am disappointed in you for not making a Bowie reference." |
Owls and babies Written by px7555 on 2007-09-06 18:40:57 Ha! Loved your owl impersonation over at JM's blog site A friend who had a baby - and a big dog - said that before the baby came, she made sure she sprinkled baby powder around every day, to get the dog used to that scent, as well as the sound of baby rattles, etc. It helps the pooch adjust to the new incoming baby (or babies??) It's also good to sprinkle on dogs after they've been skunked (of course, wash in vinegar first, just as good as tomato juice and less messy). Powder masks the remaining scent. Just a useless bit of trivia. Looking foward to your interview on Canadian Spotlight next week. And the week after, ADB on DVD!! |
Written by geekjumper on 2007-09-06 16:07:13 David, your owl impersonation is truly masterful. Also, 'babies'? 'Cribs'? Plural? Oh my! |
IPOD TOUCH Written by Alby on 2007-09-05 19:46:08 Don't you think you need one even though its completely irrational? Its like a compulsion. Do you think you'll be investing in one? |
Written by rosiewook on 2007-09-05 19:25:09 My goddaughter is currently using the Orbit system and my friends totally love it. Much better than my godson's which caused many a trip to the chiropractor. As for Myrna Loy? In spite of all of her amazing performances, my favorite movie of hers will always be "Cheaper by the Dozen." I wanted to be that together and calm when I grew up. (So sad that didn't happen.) And she always looks so classy in everything she did. : :: Is it September 18th yet? |
Written by shelsfc on 2007-09-05 18:26:13 "Baby nerdware"!! LOL! I'd love to know what you thought of Harry Potter too!! You can say without spoiling it!! Yay for an early 2008 ADB UK release!!! I can't wait!!! And good luck with getting the soundtrack on itunes!!!

The Invisible Man Series is also a good Written by nanook660 on 2007-09-05 13:05:01 David The Invisible Man DVD Collection is a good watch too. Book Recommendation for New Parents with Written by joyfulkim on 2007-09-04 22:59:04 Back when we had our first child after having a dog for 2 years (who was our baby), our vet gave us a little book called "Childproofing your Dog" (you can get it at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Childproofing-Your-Dog-Complete-Preparing/dp/0446670162/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-6090547-6707902?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188961015&sr=8-1) As a dog lover and a mother of five children, I strongly recommend it...the one with the hardest adjustment is going to be your first child, Mars . I just wish they had all of these cool stroller/carseat systems back when we had our babies....those old ones (just 15 years ago!) were a pain to install and half the time they weren't done right!

Strollers...for rollers!! Written by PLoker on 2007-09-04 20:45:21 Ah David I can picture you know chasing Mars around.. LOL.. poor doggie! If I lived in Vancover i'd be there but alas I'm in Ontario so I'll miss that. Great video! I'm not sure if Joe told you but we kind of started a book club.... Want to join? Always a pleasure P |
Dizzy!! Written by zwild1 on 2007-09-04 17:44:28 I got so dizzy watching your video blog in the wilderness...great scenery, but all that spinning...ahhhh! Sounds like you're having way too much fun with all the baby GeekWare stuff...and yeah, I saw part of JT's concert myself. |
JT, Potter and Hewl-ets (Hewlettets?) Written by ScarletBegonia on 2007-09-04 16:15:18 Please, please don't spill any Potter stuff...I'm still struggling thru. I must say that my respect for JT increased (came into being?) when I saw Black Snake Moan. He's a fine actor. As to babies...yes, exactly how many are you having? I feel like a granny all over again, reading about carseats and cribs. I'm almost as excited as when my own grandson was born. My son-in-law is pure geek, so I can relate. I was the hippie, music granny...making sure the boy was exposed to all kinds of good music, before and after birth (Grateful Dead shows in the womb don't seem to have harmed him any, maybe JT won't either). Best wishes, Scarlet |

Written by Nightsister on 2007-09-04 09:38:02 Oooh, baby stuff! We got the Britax Marathon car seat, because it fits anywhere from 5 to 65 pounds (we also got a crib that turns into a toddler bed and later on, a twin bed!) and since we live in NYC I figured I would do more "slinging" and less "strolling." Do they have that service where you live, where new moms and dads can go to certain fire stations and they'll check the car seat/LATCH system for you? Not that I think you guys don't know what you're doing of course, but it's always nice (and not paranoid, no way) to have a "professional" tell you that you're doing things right! Also, I don't know if you have time for more reading, but I enjoyed the Thin Man novel. Hammett really had a spark for dialogue writing that Powell and Loy were then able to translate on screen. |
Written by vecturist on 2007-09-04 09:34:08 Isn't it just amazing the sheer amount of stuff babies need (I'm sure you are comparing notes at work)? Yes, I have to agree the old movies (for me it was Bogart) made alcoholism look cool - my favorite quote, "The trouble with the rest of the world is they're a few drinks behind." |
The secret about having kids: Written by Bauer on 2007-09-04 09:04:19 Adopt :P. No seriously, you have one baby and then just adopt an older kid to look after that kid and subsequent others. Well - that's what my adoptive parents did anyways lol. My brother still uses a booster seat in the car and the idea of this 'snap in place' system almost makes me cry thinking of the time I've wasted in the past, lugging around and trying to secure baby seats. A Dog's Breakfast won't be out until early 2008 in the UK? Hmm, take a wild guess at why I am DESPERATE to get out of the UK lol. Is it a coincidence that I got my first day off work in near 5 months and it's a Saturday. I think it's time to call my Vancouver buddies . I wish - that would require some of that stuff - can't remember the name of it - little pieces of paper with a picture of an important person on it and it can be used to purchase food stuff . Keep on rocking! |
Oh my good night Written by Squonk on 2007-09-04 08:54:47 Timberlake?! Jane does realise the baby can probably hear that clap-trap - it'll be traumatised before it's even born! And that is one hell of a pushchair! Your kid is going to travel in style |

I have nieces and nephews and I can tell you it's very exciting to be first time mummy and daddy :D Have you thought of names yet? Hee, that's the fun part!!! I never figure you for a Harry Potter fan...:D Oh yes, if you read this, can you pls tell me what you actually said in the video? Sorry but I think you talked a bit fast for me... BABIES!!!!!!! Written by whovian on 2007-09-04 06:06:24 I guess GMTA applies. But instead of it meaning GREAT minds think alike it means GEEK minds think alike. When we had our first baby (Allison the GREAT) we bought a similar system. You could pop off the baby carrier and snap it into the base in a car or a stroller. It was PERFECT. Of course that was years ago and this new one looks so much nicer. It ALMOST makes me want to have another. ALMOST. But not quite! Our youngest is now six and I'm so happy to be done with the diapers and sleepless nights. You guys have fun! OH! And let Mars sniff a baby cap straight from the hospital. It helps him understand who these new critters are coming into the home. Did with my pup and he loved the baby from the start. |
Awwww... Written by NZNeep on 2007-09-04 05:00:25 That's just too cute! This kind of feels like when my youngest brother had his first biological kid (when I say youngest, he is still 10 years older than me ). I think these geeky parents are going to raise the geekiest generation ever and I pretty sure any kids I have will be part of that. That really is the nerdiest pram I have ever seen... I love it! |
Unsolicited Advice Written by ZoniDuck on 2007-09-04 04:48:17 Okay, first off, don't be bustin' on JT. He put on a great show ( as I'm sure you'll find out when you watch it with Jane), and a display of talent and skill like that is sexy as hell. Now for the unsolicted advice. When my best friend was pregnant, I gave her and her hubby an exercise ball (the FitBall from BallDynamics). I gave it to them mostly because she was having a lot of lower back pain towards the end of her pregnancy, and a lot of moms said that sitting on the ball helped with that. But the most important thing I read when researching was that the ball could be used after the baby was born for bouncing/rocking the baby. Basically, you'll spend an inordinate amount of time with the baby in your arms either swaying from side to side, or bouncing gently, in an effort to calm them or get them back to sleep. This is HELL on your lower back and knees after just a few minutes, especially as the little dear starts to gain weight. Holding the baby while sitting on the exercise ball and swaying or bouncing gently will save your lower back and knees. Sara and her husband told me a few months after the baby was born, that the exercise ball was the single best gift that anyone had gotten them, and that they used it more than any other baby item. So that's my unsolicited advice for the day. Oh, that and to get a Baby Bjorn, because my friend's husband wore his out carrying their baby around, and not at all because I think you'd look adorable with a baby strapped to your chest. :-) As always, best wishes to you, Jane, Mars, and the baby (babies?). |

Inquiring minds want to know... Written by littleclaire on 2007-09-04 02:47:56 Add me to the list of people who want to know what you thought of Harry Potter :o) Good luck for the impending birth! I just had a baby, so I can say with absolute conviction - even if you stand away from the "danger end" you will still see everything! Hubby is still traumatized. My favourite item of baby nerdware (you coined a phrase, there!) was the AngelCare Sound & Movement monitor. As the first-time mother of a premie this saved my sanity. It detects baby's breathing, and screeches like a banshee if nothing happens for 20 seconds. Or if you take baby out of the crib without turning it off first. |

The Road Written by Astrumporta on 2007-09-04 00:53:59 I picked up The Road at an airport recently. Oh my, you nailed it! The bleakness is unrelenting, isn't it? Is it not possible to use beautiful language in a happy book? I have to admit I couldn't get through it, but it was just bad timing for my life. I will pick it up again. Come on, we'd love to hear your thoughts on Deathly Hallows! The whole planet has read it already anyway. |
Written by MdGateFan on 2007-09-04 00:28:32 Baby nerdware - great term. It is amazing all the things that are out there for parents and the kiddies. Poor Mars - the kid isn't here and he is already being chased pushed around. Good idea thought giving him a bit of practice for when baby become a toddler and wants to chase "Doggie" around the house. (My niece loves to that with "her" "doggie") On the other hand Mars will no doubt be very happy with amount of food that will be on the floor in about year.

hey, it's you! Written by Lewis on 2007-09-03 23:27:48 Glad you're back, man! |
First post here Written by emyrys on 2007-09-03 22:59:48 After weeks of lurking & enjoying your blog, I had to finally comment when you mentioned so many things that I wanted to answer. First, the Thin Man is one of my all time favorite movies -- I have loved the whole series for years & if you are just watching them for the first time, you are in for a treat! (The first one is the best, but they are all pretty wonderful). I think that Myrna Loy & William Powell are the best onscreen married couple ever -- their chemistry was perfect (respectful, witty, sexy, familiar). (hmm, ok, Hepburn & Tracy were great too). I am looking forward to the DVD release of A Dog's Breakfast (and have it preordered via Amazon ). I've shown a bunch of friends (not involved in Stargate fandom) the trailers & they are looking forward to it as well. My daughter just finished the 7th Harry Potter book today, and will be even more excited when she realizes that she was reading it at the same time you were (she's a big fan of both Stargates). Which reminds me of the last thing I wanted to say -- best wishes & good thoughts to you & Jane & the baby. The only advice I ever give to new parents is to try & always enjoy each stage of your child's life. It's too easy to start grieving about what is gone (for example, missing the helpless infant as they start to walk & talk). Children grow and change very fast, and if you are not right there with them and paying attention at whatever developmental stage they are in, you will miss it. |

Baby nerdware... Written by sinister_mosquito on 2007-09-03 22:13:22 Well, can never start to young...lol... I'm a little curious as to how close the 'little sproglet' is.?. Good luck in the wilderness David. I can't wait to see season 4, and ADB! |
Sticker Shock! Written by ladyniko on 2007-09-03 22:12:44 **gasp** $900 for the car seat/stroller combo? Yowtch! I hope that the car seat is one that will last up to a certain weight, because they tend to grow out of them so fast. Then, you have to go buy the booster seat that will last them until they're like until they hit the next weight/height peak, then, one more after that until they are finally over a certain weight/high combo to not have to be in a booster seat any longer. I believe my oldest sister went through like 3 sets of car seats (she had twins) when my nephews were younger. Poor Mars - you're having too much fun chasing him with the stroller. Are you trying to get him ready for when the Sproglet is a toddler and thus, thinks it's fun to chase Doggie all over the house w/ their stroller? (Says the aunt of 5 nephews & 2 nieces.... Good luck getting everything together and I'm sure we'll be hearing about all the cool & geeky baby toys you'll find to play with (under the claim that it's for the baby....) |
Now I want a new stroller Written by wordplay on 2007-09-03 21:52:26 Never mind that my littlest has just started kindergarten and will be five in a few weeks - I was addicted to baby gadgets and went through a truly shameful number of strollers, carrier, slings and backpacks when mine were little, because there is no system so well-developed that it can't be tweaked to a state slightly closer to perfection. Much with the shiny there! Have fun! |

You are cracking me up! Written by crazymom on 2007-09-03 21:17:37 You don't do things by halves do you? Not that I wasn't doing the same thing about 16 years ago. Now I'm looking into driver's ed classes, which is just incredibly scary. |
Written by JennyJenn on 2007-09-03 21:14:28 "baby nerdware" - that cracks me up. That's fantastic that you're set and ready to go already! I simply marvel at how organized you are; learning lines, filing a hit TV show, traveling, set for baby, filming the next "favourite line", updating the blog, promoting movies, (planning the wedding?), and probably more mundane things like eating and showering. I think we all want to know what your secret is. Do you have a TARDIS stashed nearby? |
Written by Vikitty on 2007-09-03 21:14:25 Gah. I'm at work and can't load the youtube video. What did you THINK of the 7th Potter book? You only said you finished it! Liked it? Too short? Etc, etc? LOL! I'd love to see a video of you scaring mars with the stroller. Poor Mars. Oh, and no, you don't have to be a student at VFS to attend the screening. See you on Saturday! |
Written by Leishkin on 2007-09-03 21:14:02 oooh transformer-pram, will you call it "pramatron"? Aaaaanyway. exciting stuff all round. If this is how excited you are about the soon-to-be hewlett-let, I can't imagine how ecstatic you'll be when it's actually born I'm so happy for you guys! |
Busy! Written by px7555 on 2007-09-03 21:11:40 Wow, talk about having a full plate! |
Can't wait for season 4! Written by Tigereye on 2007-09-03 21:06:40 Or 3 on dvd either. I need cable! Love your little vid there. I hope you don't mind that I linked to it on my new forum. Have fun at the park for the rest of the week! ;-) |
Sleep? Written by Siann on 2007-09-03 20:59:41 You have so much going on! Do you ever find time to sleep? Lord knows that will be nonexistant when the little one arrives. |
Dangit... Written by Aten on 2007-09-03 20:59:25 We had class today! I am officially ticked! Yeesh, I'm such an empath. I'm getting a bad case of excited nerves with the "fast approaching" dates, too. What I need to focus on now is organizing transportation into town so I can go to Best Buy on the 18th or slightly after to pick up that DVD! Extras, thou shalt be MINE! |
weekend in the wilderness Written by fumblesmcstupid on 2007-09-03 20:56:01 I don't know about you, but I had a meltdown putting the crib together. |
