Comicon Crazy! PDF Print E-mail

How great is it to be surrounded by over 100,000 of your own? These are my peeps! These are the Comicon geeks!

We've just done a massive Stargate Atlantis panel for about 4000 fans here in sunny, sweaty San Diego and signed a few hundred posters for those that could stand the heat of the endless line-ups. I couldn't hear a damn thing on the panel. So, instinct kicked in and I took the defensively smiling meerkat stance of polite attention with a slight edge of alertness for danger. No problem hearing the questions from the floor, just impossible to make out the words of anyone on the stage with me...perhaps it's better that way ;-)

Word from the nerd world is that there are Rodney McKay action figures out on the floor...yes, somewhere out there are little versions of me dressed in uniform and action attire...I think I've finally made it! But then I thought that when the little pewter McKay Trolls were released as well ;-)

A Dog's Breakfast is being beautifully flaunted on the "other" side of all the Stargatge Atlantis posters, with trailers blaring from the MGM booth (so I'm told...they won't let me out there!).

Must get ready for dinner...we're being wined and dined along with Jewel Staite and her kooky-cool and hilarious husband Matt...I plan on staggering back in time for drinks with FOX at the hotel a little later on...I'll see if I can coordinate a twitter or two in the process.

Cheers,

D!

Pewter trolls and ComicCon
Written by wraithfodder on 2007-07-31 20:22:38
Hmm, your pewter "McKay trolls" look like a cross between MONK (USA network show) and Liev Schrieber!

Meanwhile, loved your ComicCon blog over at SciFi. Best one of the bunch. Will you be doing CC next year? I gotta attend! :grin

Wonderful photos!

Just saw a couple of photos of you and Jane posing for the Comic Con photographers. I love Jane when she laughs, so joyous! And that sideways look on your face, hee! You two look so very happy.
Written by Zerocool on 2007-07-30 03:19:59
Hee Hee, You'd think with a room full of geeks they might be able to sort the sound out! It sound like you had a better time than Wolf Pegasus 2 anyway ;)
Written by nunshavingfun on 2007-07-29 23:41:37
Thank you for going to comic con! It was really nice to be able to meet you again! It's nice to know you had fun!

Congrats on everything as well!
Ahhhhh....geeks
Written by whovian on 2007-07-29 11:43:30
So I know I'm a geek. I don't care. I married a geek and we had two beautiful geek children. I LOVE to party with geeks. That musta been great! And even though I'm not really into comic books (I don't not like them and I'm a fan of stuff FROM the comic books I just can't let myself get obsessive about THOSE, too!), I REALLY wanted to be there. Oh well. I am SO GLAD it was a success! :p
Written by rosiewook on 2007-07-29 10:14:38
How could they not let a geek run around the prom? That's just cruel!

Be sure and tell us any tidbits that you did manage to pick up. You owe it to your fellow geeks to report what you know.

And pic spam! I'll take some pic spam.
Glad to have met you
Written by kangamoo on 2007-07-29 03:06:46
Just wanted to say I was glad to meet you backstage briefly before your panel, and to meet the lovely Jane too! I hope you guys both enjoyed the con, perhaps I'll get to see you both at another event in the future.
Thank you!
Written by sarblythe on 2007-07-29 02:28:29
Just wanted to stop in to "thanks" for making my con! I thoroughly enjoyed the SGA panel and didn't mind braving the queue for my poster in the least! Also, seeing you at the ADB signing and actually getting a chance to thank you for all of your wonderful work in person was certainly the highlight of my con, if not my year!

Thanks, again, for continuing to give the fans your all!

*hugs*
Back home now....
Written by fishbaum on 2007-07-29 00:56:27
I'm back home sweet home, but this was a great con! Yeah, you all on the panel seemed kid of out of it, good to know there is a reason! I felt bad for Jewel, she really did seem to feel out of place....

There are parenthood rumors awash and while I never got to see Jane this weekend, many of us are wondering if you have any news to share with us? (I'm the one who asked the parenting question -- good ol' Joe, "their bones are soft"!)
Loads of Fun??
Written by PLoker on 2007-07-28 23:10:05
Well from your blog and Joe's pics from his blog I can tell everyone is having a fantastic time.

Can't wait for your pics.
Written by grarr_enhanced on 2007-07-28 22:56:11
Woah.

Heyyy your Majesty, that toy thing from the link you gave? The face is completely all wrong xD It looks more like Martin Gero than you. The jawline is completely wrong, the eyes are too squinty and I dunno... the mouth should slant downwards a bit to get the real McKay :grin
Sounds like you're having fun.
Written by Tigereye on 2007-07-28 21:10:38
Wish I could have been there to see the SGA panel and get in line to have a poster signed. Too bad, maybe next time.

I'm glad that MGM is promoting ADB. Too bad you can't go and see the poster or any of the other stuff there. Guess that's the price one pays for fame.

I am really hoping that I will be able to meet you and the rest of the cast (I would especially like to meet you Sweetie!) sometime. Guess I'll just have to see.
I wish I was there! :(
Written by ladyniko on 2007-07-28 20:44:59
Hi -

Glad to hear you all are having fun. I am most disappointed in the Yahoo picutres - they had like a slew of 300, Hot Rod, Jessica Alba and Kate Beckinsale pictures, but none of you guys! :( Boo hiss on them! They don't know what they're missing!

I wish I was there, but the state of Missouri took 4 months to process my provisional massage license that I only just finally got in the mail today.

Oh well, there is next year and I am already plotting and planning to be there with my table in tow! So, I will gladly offer up my services as a trained and licensed massage therapist to you and the rest of the SG folks. :D

And now, back to studying for my board exam.... :p
Written by Sulien on 2007-07-28 20:16:04
Very glad to hear that you're enjoying yourself there. :grin If I hadn't bought a house, I most definitely would have been there myself.

There's a new McKay action figure?! Cool! I am so going to snag several! One to put next to Strider in the Thorongil beast (my car), one to set on my bookshelves and one to keep in the packaging. *runs off to Google search*
G4 TV Coverage
Written by windshieldbug on 2007-07-28 17:00:32
I'm enjoying watching the Con on tv. I am hoping to see one of the SGA panels covered.
Photos!
Written by wraithfodder on 2007-07-28 16:46:53
Oh, you took photos, I saw photos of you taking photos, please post some ;) And I wish I could have gone. It sounds like it's been a blast, but very crowded (sold out). I've been living the con vicariously through other fan accounts - I've culled 'em all to my LJ at Wraithfodder's Lair for anyone interested. Just thought I'd share since there's no way to put 'em all here. :grin
Written by Fraggledragon on 2007-07-28 16:14:30
Nerds and Geeks, comics and costumes, celebrities and toys AND the Squirrel King?!?!?! I would give my back teeth to be there!!! But then that would be painful...and a bit stupid...
I should just save my money and get my ass over there next time!
But that would hurt like hell too...my pocket that is!
Glad you are enjoying yourself!

You looked great yesterday! Not lost at all. :) From your comments above, I now know why castmembers are frequently hungover or still enebriated when they appear on panels. It's the "wine & dine" that the corporates make you do. I was beginning to think it was the thought of facing 4000+ fans(or there are terrible problems afoot in the industry)! Not going to brave the push & shove today. 2.5 days was enough for this year. Gotta let the bruises heal, so I can work tomorrow. I'm a psych nurse, so I should be able to write this off as research: 'When Geeks Get Together' - meek and quiet - Yah, right! Enjoy the rest of your stay. SGA is the biggest reason I go to Con, so I'm very glad you chose to come. Thanks!
Seriously?!
Written by Aten on 2007-07-28 15:25:53
Okay, that does it. I'm going toy shopping, or perhaps toy hunting. Depends on how hard it'll be to find one of those action figures.

I'm going to side with Becky S. and say that one of these days I'll make it out to the con. I'd love to be around that many thousand people like me, too. :grin
Written by equusentric on 2007-07-28 13:02:43
To quote one of my favorite commercials re: the pewter..."This...doesn't look like you." Hopefully the action figure will be more accurate. I'll buy one to put on my dashboard to keep Faramir company. :grin

And will put in another YES PLEASE for your attendance to Dragon*Con!!
Pros & Cons
Written by tpod on 2007-07-28 12:00:09
I don't know that wild horses could drag me into the madness that is Comic-Con, but I'm always envious of those who get to go. :cry

Y'all really ought to come on down South to Dragon*Con. It's Comic-Con with a twist of Southern hospitality and about half the insanity. More fun than you can shake a stick at AND has some of the best Geek-oriented programming EVAR.

Plus, you could possibly come face to face with your separated-at-birth twin Jason Hawes from Sci-Fi's "Ghost Hunters".
Written by WolfenM on 2007-07-28 08:21:50
Glad you seem to be having a good time at Nerd Prom, despite not being able to floorwalk (I hope you get the chance to at some point!). And I hope the new figure actually looks like you this time!! I'm surprised they don't have to clear the figures with you, actually ... Next time, make sure that's stated in your contract! ;)
Written by PB_Gal on 2007-07-28 07:05:16
Glad you had a good time David. There was a little photo of your in the background in Joe's Blog!
Oh my....
Written by whatsername34 on 2007-07-28 05:05:18
That pewter figure is ...well...dreadful. Still, I would rather have a scary action figure of me than none at all.

At least it isn't like those Burger King toys that Lord of the Rings put out..those poor actors. Not that I own those..or anything...yeah....

Wish I could be at the Comic Con. Never gotten to go, and I have a great Live Journal friend there right now.

Thanks for being so faithful to your blog so the rest of us can keep up. :)

Oh, and that Meerkat joke almost gave me death by Ramen Noodles. What a way to go.

Meerkat, a good look. Always look like they know everything that is going on.

Hope you and Jane have a great time the rest of the weekend.

:)
MGM lies and how to get into the convent
Written by PHoss on 2007-07-28 03:45:08
Sorry to say this David but there are no trailers of ADB playing at the MGM booth. Also if the problem with you not being allowed on the convention floor is because you'll get mobbed my I suggest wearing a costume and changing the sound of your voice? I mean your an actor for pete's sake shouldn't be that hard to go incognito?!? And if the problem is that your badge says David Hewlett well that can easily be fixed I'll gladly trade you mine and take your place for a day rofl.
Pewter McKay Troll
Written by LogicSequence on 2007-07-28 03:43:25
You know D, i never said anything before, because you know, it was your first McKay action figure. But in all honesty, those pewter McKay trolls look like the devil-spawn of John Travolta and Martin Gero! ;)

Glad you're having fun at ComicCon! Wish i was there to share the fun with ya, i am after all, one of "those" peeps! Except i'm a poor peep, and can't afford plane tickets or hotel accommodations. :(
Written by slbrannen on 2007-07-28 03:14:57
OMG I am dying. That is absolutely hilarious...the pewter McKay action figure?? Whattt? What can you say accept. That is just...awesome!! I don't know what the heck the figurine looks like, except for the stylus pad there is little resemblance. Thanks for the updates. Its fun to read about your side of the experience. Interestingly enough...I can't help but wonder. Is this the first time you have had to fake it during a panel discussion?? :grin
Q&A at Comic Con
Written by Lasha on 2007-07-28 03:03:38
From one of the 4,000 people who was sitting in the crowd at the SGA panel, you did not look like a meerkat at all.
Written by Masterchica on 2007-07-28 02:47:45
Ok I have to be the first to admit that you can totally put the "chubby look" and still be very attractive... but that figure looks nothing like you (That actually looks a lot like a chipmunk)
Have Fun!
Written by crash on 2007-07-28 02:44:39
Sounds like a blast! Thousands of geeks in one place?! I'd love to find just one at the factory where I work. Tired of the "DUH" looks whenever I try to start a conversation.

Happy to hear ADB is being promoted.

Have a great weekend! Wish I could be there.
Written by s_aurius on 2007-07-28 02:31:15
Sounds like you're having lots of fun. Thanks for taking the time to let those of us who can't attend know what's going on! :)
Please update us! If you have time...
Written by Kdvb1 on 2007-07-28 02:17:53
Those of us that really wanted to go would love to see any and all pictures and videos you have of the Comicon and your vacation if you want to share ;)...and read anything you would like to write about it...including an hour by hour diary of what one does at the Comicon :grin(joke). I have never been to a Con and really wanted to go to that one in particular...note to self: start saving now for next year! Yes I am a Con virgin....hmmm that just doesn't sound right!
While you're at Comic-Con...
Written by mklutz on 2007-07-28 01:02:07
You should check out John Allison of Scary-Go-Round. It's a fantastic web comic out of the UK.

So jealous I couldn't make it to Comic-Con this year. *sigh* Maybe next year. I'm glad you're having a good time, though! And I love that you can enjoy the con the same way we fangeeks do. :) Please keep coming to them! I hope to get to see you at one sometime!
Glad you're having fun!
Written by JintosNanna on 2007-07-28 00:22:00
I'm glad you're having fun. Without televisions no less. Ha ha ha!!! I'll never get tired of that crack! :-p I'm keeping my fingers crossed to see you and Jane pop up at Dragon*Con next. Paul's gonna be there and it'll be a chance to promote ADB which I watched the other night.

Hugs,
Rachel (JintosNanna)
So, your having a ball!
Written by animallover on 2007-07-27 23:47:52
Glad to see you are having a ball! THanks for filling us in those of us in other countries can get a kinda feel of being there! :) :) hove a fabulous dinner & enjoy yourselves.
Ahh the joys of the con...
Written by MdGateFan on 2007-07-27 23:37:31
Sounds like you are having a lot of fun.

Why won't they let you over there? Are they worried about a fan mob or that you will spend all your time looking for Doctor Who stuff? :)

A McKay action figure? That is good news. Are you looking forward to being able to play with yourse... er I mean the McKay doll? ;)

Have fun with your dinner. Having been to a number of cons over the years I know that the what I really enjoy is spending time with people over food (and sometimes even having a good meal)
Yay for the ADB plug!
Written by watcher652 on 2007-07-27 23:04:08
That's great that ADB is on the Atlantis posters! Did you know that there's a $5 credit toward the DVD if you get the download on Unbox?

I see from a photo on Joe Mallozzi's blog that you have your video camera with you. Are we going to get a video blog of Comic Con from you?

Enjoy the rest of the con!
Written by lemonchicken on 2007-07-27 22:57:26
Aw, D. Bet you wish you could wander around the booths and peruse at leisure. Pros and cons of being Earth's hero I guess!

*Hugz* Hope the rest of the weekend is just as great! I haven't seen the latest action figures yet! The SG-1 ones looked really good.
Enjoy
Written by Becky S. on 2007-07-27 22:33:31
Have a great dinner. Sounds like a lot of fun was had today. I know a few people who go to the con every year but I haven't had the chance yet. SOmeday.
