I really must get things in gear on the writing front or else I'm actually going to have to have a holiday next hiatus! Ideally I want to be shooting the next film! Right now I've got a chunk of "Design of the Dead" written, but I'm a long way from a first draft. We're really getting close to a "Starcrossed" deal, which could mean that our behind-the-scenes comedy could be the next hiatus project...should have more on that shortly (which I know you've heard before!) Jane and John want me to look over "Cursed" (need to change the title, I know) which is a rather dark occult-thriller I wrote just before "A Dog's Breakfast". So right now we're a bit up in the air as to how to spend those precious months of winter.
The hiatus was ridiculously perfect. Jane and I managed to escape to Hawaii and grab some heavenly peace and quiet. We snorkeled about looking at anything and everything that floated, swam or drifted by, spending most of our days flailing around like the giant sea turtles with which we shared our little corner of the Pacific Ocean. Exquisite scenery (if you're on the Big Island, take the helicopter tour, it's breath-taking!) devilishly delicious food and sun-drenched, quality Jane-time. And get this - I actually managed to read...books! The thing about working on a television series is that all you EVER read is scripts. The biggest hit of my literary vacuuming would have to be This Book Will Save Your Life
A beautifully written, dryly-funny L.A. story that had me both missing & mocking my old stomping ground at the same time! Could be my favourite read of the year!

Written by nanook660 on 2007-08-21 14:05:06 Just read "THIS BOOK WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE' Good book. Now reading "THE WORLD WITHOUT US" Good book too. Thanks David for directing us to the books. I have enjoyed the ones you've suggested so far. Hey wait an idea is coming to mind. Hold onto your hats. We should form a Book Club here. What do you all think? Like the Oprah book club. Call it the HEWLETTARIAN BOOK CLUB. Catchy eh Fran |
Yet More Book Written by geminidream on 2007-08-14 18:52:55 Hey, thanks, I am rushing right out to find some of Scalzi's books. If you have any reading time left in this short Canadian summer and haven't discovered him yet, check out anything by Jack McDevitt (kinda old school hard sf but with 3D characters - lots of fun to read like early Charles Sheffield). enjoy the sunshine! geminidream |
Maui is mauuuuuuuuuuuuuuvelous Written by whovian on 2007-07-26 16:06:03 My husband and I have been to Maui 3 and 2 times (respectively) and we LOVE it. In fact we've never been to any of the other islands except for the airport in Honolulu (which doesn't really count if you ask me). I told my parents to go and THEY loved it. My brother got married on his birthday this year (July 21) and HE is in Maui with my sis-in-law enjoying the aloha spirit, gorgeous moutain/ocean views and all that the great state of Hawaii has to offer. I'm so glad you not only went but enjoyed it, too. It is a good place to unwind. Glad to have you back. |
Hail to the King, baby! Written by TheSprklnEmerald on 2007-07-25 22:28:24 Glad to have you back. I can't believe you're nearing the end of season 4 filming! It doesn't seem fair that renewal depends on ratings that come through so long after you film. The way Sci Fi does things irks me. Anyway, I got the movie from iTunes and Amazon, and I made people watch it at Shore Leave. Paul was asked about it during his Q&A's, and I gave him a copy of the special flyer I'd made up for him to sign. The original one has his signature on your forehead. Best of luck to you at Comic Con, and I hope the blog for Sci Fi works out. That would be a very good sign of things to come. Plus I'm glad to hear that you're doing things with the Katie Brown character. I was worried it'd be a season of McKay following Carter around. Love ya! Em |
Hello there Written by Arlessiar on 2007-07-25 16:13:47 Glad to hear that you and Jane had such a terrific holiday and lots of time to relax and just to enjoy each other’s presence! Shocking, you might actually have nothing to do next hiatus? Ah no, I see you’ve quite a few projects lined up in true Hewlett fashion. *g* Really, where do you find the time for all that? Shooting SGA, promoting ADB, new film projects, writing scripts, reading books, time for Jane and Mars, friends and family, surfing the Internet, updates on dgeek and twitter – wow! But I bet you’re a workaholic and can’t do nothing for weeks on end, right? Because you could actually try to do nothing this hiatus and just enjoy family quality time. Good to hear that Kate’s been back to Atlantis! I can’t wait to see Jeannie again! Two brilliant Hewletts playing two brilliant McKays – how much better can it get? *g* I’m one of those who can’t download ADB from iTunes (not possible from iTunes Germany) or amazon.com, so I’ll wait for the DVD. I’ve never seen the movie (missed the London screening) and I didn’t read any spoilers, so I’m very curious about it - for many months now! I wanted to thank you for your efforts concerning the international release! I’m so glad that we’ll get one eventually after your talk with MGM. I’ll probably buy the original English version of it though as I simply can’t wait much longer to see it, and you said we won’t get the international release so soon. Which brings me to something I’ve been wondering about: Do you have any idea already if the international release means that there might be a dubbed version in Germany? Usually most films/TV shows get dubbed here. I often prefer the original versions, but many other people here who can’t speak English but are also curious to see this film (like my Mum ) would be very happy about that! So if there really was a dubbed version I’d probably even buy both versions of the DVD… Me, a big fan? Noooo, of course not As I won’t have seen/be able to watch ADB when you do the “twitter livechat ADB screening”, I also won’t join in the fun (have to avoid many twitter messages then I fear *g*). I can only hope that you think of repeating that event one day and might do another online screening, maybe after September. What do you think? Hope you and Jane have lots of fun at Comic Con! Don’t party too hard; you still have to be able to write your report.

Welcome Back! Written by hera2511 on 2007-07-25 11:21:40 Glad you had a restful--and at the same time--adventurous vacation. Is that even possible? I loved Time Traveler's Wife, as the protagonist's musical young adulthood reminded me so much of my own. You should try Life of Pi and the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime, whenever you have more time on your hands. They made quite a mark on me, and I recommend them to anyone whom I know well enough to talk to. Have a great time finishing the season, and godspeed at ComicCon. Best, Diane from Austin, TX |

Written by Shawna on 2007-07-23 12:57:27 Huh. I read The Time Traveler's wife. Or rather, sort of skimmed it. It was certainly interesting it its way, with an intruiging concept, but I don't know...maybe I just didn't find the whole real-life relationship drama aspect of it as interesting as the time travel parts. Or maybe I just found those parts where he shows up and hangs out with her as she's a child amusing, charming, and vaguely creepy. |
tacky indeed Written by crazy4dh on 2007-07-23 11:17:03 Definitely tacky, but you both look like you had loads of fun!!!! Glad you managed to get a well deserved break. Try C. J. Cherryh's Foreigner series. |

Written by rosiewook on 2007-07-22 07:51:03 Okay. We totally need a picspam entry so you can make us jealous of your going to Hawai'i. Did you attempt any snorkeling pictures? Totally agree with your taste in books. I'm a little surprised that you haven't given in to the Harry Potter craze. It's a wonderful world and a lot of fun to read. It'll take you no time at all to go through them. Cave in! I got three hours of sleep yesterday so I could indulge in doing nothing but reading all day. Well, the three hours was because my dog woke me up and I was too excited to go back to sleep. She took her revenge on me for being a slug all day at 1:30am this morning when she decided to make as much of a pest of herself as possible. Good luck prioritizing your projects. Just trust your gut. You'll know which is the right one to concentrate on. |

Ok, I registered too because... Written by McGillionFan on 2007-07-22 00:32:42 of you mentioning The Time Traveler's Wife. I'm on page 231 and really love the book's concept and story. I have to thank the neighborhood book club for making me read - and this book is this month's selection. I happened to catch a trailer for a Fall TV show on some network that's called Journey Man that may be following this book's premise perhaps? I may have to check it out. I have been enjoying your blog, show, movies, twitter, but your mention of this book made me want to say something. Glad you've been reading. Let us know how you like the book! I've also ordered A Dog's Breakfast on DVD - I look forward to Sept's delivery. I should be getting Dog's Breakfast AND Atlantis Season 3 in the same package and what a day that will be when they arrives! Oh - and about my username - I'm a Hewlett fan too - ha! Don't feel left out! Enjoy the last 8 eps! Good luck! (Do you really read these? lol) |

TTW Written by kellyb on 2007-07-21 20:44:56 The mention of the Time Traveler's Wife broke me and made me finally register. If ever there was a book I wish I had written myself -- this one is it. I am sending Chicago thoughts at you... |
Da King Written by Pistol Pete on 2007-07-21 20:40:25 Welcome home your highness!!! Glad to hear you back to work and supporting your better half in the custome she is most familar. Scifi states new season to start in September and if I understand things correctley with Scifi, they split the season 10 episodes/split. Is there any word when second part of season 4 is likely to come on air, and how long will it take to scifi to make up there minds on season 5? Good luck in your down time, looking forward to "ADB" in Septemeber. Have you given any consideration to doing a western??? I can see it now, a geek cowboy! They do exist. |
Books! Written by Aten on 2007-07-21 17:52:28 Ooh, hey! At long last I'm through with my annoying (and boring as hell) summer reading assigned book, so I can read for fun again, too. Still, my family has this great tradition for reading Harry Potter books: My dad reads the book aloud to the rest of the family, character voices included. The next few weeks of my summer are going to rock. Dangit, I'm two hours away from San Diego (my birthplace, in fact) and I can't afford in any sense of the word to drive down there for Comic Con. I've always wanted to go, so "extraordinarily bummed" is an understatement. |
Ooooh I just finished Harry Potter Written by Kdvb1 on 2007-07-21 17:14:33 Are you planning on reading it? I bought it last night and read for about 4 hours and passed out tired...then started reading it today and finished in less than 5 more hours. I love those books!!! |
Glad you had a terrific vacation Written by Kdvb1 on 2007-07-21 17:12:33 I wanted to go see you and Joe and David Nutter(& tons of others ) at the Comic con but I didn't plan it early enough and flights from FL to there are costly now. I hope you have a great time without me. |
All Hail the Squirrel King!! Written by Tigereye on 2007-07-21 16:43:09 I'm glad to hear that you had such fun on your vacation. Only 8 more episodes to film in season 4? I have to wait until September comes to see season 3 (but I have it pre-ordered from Amazon along with ADB of course!) I have started reading "The Android's Dream" because I saw a picture of you holding it up and giving a thumbs up. I am just past chapter 1 (really hilarious!) Will have to see if I can get or order the others from the library. Also reading the SGA book Halcyon (haven't got too far into that either) Guess I will be doing alot more reading than I already do! Glad you're enjoying yourself while you're working. I have a question: Does MGM have a blooper reel for Atlantis that they will let us see sometime? I was recalling the twitter about the door that was difficult to work with. I think some of those could be pretty funny if they wanted to put them in the special features of the DVDs. Love ya! Tigereye |
Written by MdGateFan on 2007-07-21 16:19:22 So do you are JF have duels to see who is the bigger geek? Let's see, you have twitter, myspace, this web site, and he has the newest and best toy for geeks of all ages who have to much money. But good for him for downloading your film... I am glad to see that you had such a good time in Hawaii. That is one of the places I would love to get back to at some point. I only saw a small part of it more then a decade ago but it was beautiful. |

twitter at comic con Written by Sweeneybird on 2007-07-21 09:13:41 I am SO looking forward to being 'Twittered' while you're on stage at Comic Con - I think all attending squirrels should set their phones to play the SGA theme when they get a new message so that you can hear how many fans you have! |

Written by Klenotka on 2007-07-21 08:41:07 Hey David, welcome back! It´s great to know that you had good holiday. And now....do you know that Nykl was in convention while you were in Hawaii? He made a photo of us, his fans, and said that "he will show this to Hewlett, because whole cinema is full because of him" So I am only curious if he did already show you the photos |
Congrats on a fun vacation! Written by wraithfodder on 2007-07-21 08:18:23 Glad you had fun on Hawaii - maybe one day I'll get there myself and for excaping the shackles of the computer. It can be tough to do I'm one of those folks waiting for ADB on DVD - and Best Buy - yes! I'll be picking it up the day it hits the shelves Neat on the potential blog for SciFi.Com! Written by dgustavson on 2007-07-21 07:41:55 Welcome back! Glad you had such a good time. And good choice in books! Oddly enough I've just finished : * Old Man's War * Ghost Brigades * The Last Colony (Guess I need to stop taking suggestions from Joe Mallozzi ;-) ) The Time Traveler's Wife was also a fantastic book. Read that a while ago. I may have to check out This Book Will Save Your Life and the The Secret Lives of Bees. You're not the first person to suggest it so far. Welcome back once again! I can't wait to see the results of your next project -- whatever it will be. |
Books Written by kaniku on 2007-07-21 05:33:23 Just had to jump in to say that The Time Traveler's Wife is the BEST BOOK EVER. Yes, I did need capslock there. I work in a bookstore and whenever someone asks me for a good book, I put that in their hands. Excellent taste!!!!

Written by Fraggledragon on 2007-07-21 04:07:40 Hey to Hewlett! Time Travelers Wife is one of the best books I've read! My favorite reads are all the Dirk Pitt novels, by Clive Cussler! Especially Shock Wave and Atlantis Found, Hey! Atlantis Found! Never made that link before now! Kudos to the helicopter, I just love them! Just bought two new ones actually. R/C model ones that is! Luvin the blog, luvin the site, Luvin Atlantis and luvin Dr Who! Keep it up mate, don't burn yourself out though! Fraggle |
Adorable! Written by cinderlily on 2007-07-21 03:13:47 You and Jane (or is it Jane and you, I fail English... and I'm a teacher!) are officially the most adorable couple ever. I read the Time Traveler's Wife almost a year ago and I have to say that it is truly brilliant. I ache just thinking about it, as I do when it comes to any and all stories like that. Now that I think about it, I am going to have to reread it. Which will have to be in like a week, when I finish reading rereading and then absorbing Deathly Hallows. Thank you for the book recommendations, as I am trying to spend what is left of my summer absorbed in books but have so far been reading cheesy romance and absolutely horrid SciFi. Though I do have to recommend to any and all the book China Ghosts, it is by far my top read of the summer. |
Written by nunshavingfun on 2007-07-21 02:53:55 Modern books aren't existential enough! All these people taking existence for granted and writing about life without enough nihilism thrown it for it to be really worth anything. Working on a tv series sounds a lot like being a history major except instead of scripts all you read are articles and Monographs. :/ Going to comic con without geeking out would be a crime! |
Fantabulous! Written by animallover on 2007-07-21 02:49:18 I just made up a new word fantabulous! Cross between fantastic & fabulous! Very happy you had such a great holiday & some quality time spent with Jane. Love the piccie of you both in front of a copter "very nice"! Glad to see you had some time to read a book more... Peace Cathie |
7 Hours into the Deathly Hallows myself! Written by Zerocool on 2007-07-21 02:21:09 Hey! Glad to hear you had a good time! The thing about reading is that it traps you and distracts you from writing. I find my own writing pretty poor in comparison or that I don't think Ive read enough of what's out there to write. What if I write something only to find its been done before? Have fun at the Con, wish I were there! Bought my Harry Potter at midnight and haven't put it down. except to write this Its a page turner! |
Written by Becky S. on 2007-07-21 02:11:14 Glad to hear the two of you had a great time on holiday! You actually managed to do some non-work type of stuff! Hope all your writing projects keep going well for you. Wish I could go to Comic Con. I have a friend that goes every year. But I'll be working that weekend. However, have fun as much as possible while you're there. |
Reading and ADB Written by WolfenM on 2007-07-21 02:06:50 Ooh, been wanting to read The Time Traveler's Wife Myself -- but Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will have to come first! Are you going to spend tomorrow reading it like a large nubmer of your squirrely minions will be? *grin* Congrats on the success of the download of ADB. In case you missed my twitterering at you, I want you to know that I broke down and downloaded it myself. (You merciless self-promoter, you!) Loved it, but having just had a hysterectomy, it brought new meaning to the phrase "gut-bustingly funny". Still, life has been ridiculously rough for me of late, and watching ADB's really helped me keep my spirits up (as has watching Atlantis and chatting with people here). Thank-you. ADB will be getting a glowing review in August's Sequential Tart. Oh, and a request. I and many fans are very enamoured of the orange fleece -- it's been highly discussed on LJ. More pictures, please? (Well, when it gets cooler out, I mean. Don't want you to swelter!) And maybe a few pics of that Dalek I hear you own? Lots of Who fans here! Stray thought: Don't you think Twitter.com needs to sell a shirt that says "Get Twitterpated!" ?... |
HAIL! THY HEWLETT RETURNETH! Written by LogicSequence on 2007-07-21 02:05:50 Well it's about time you updated your blog! I'm really glad you had such a great time in Havaii! Sounds like it was rejuvenating, relaxing, and all around fantasting! I have to say though, you two make the quintessential tourists in that photo! Speaking of, lets see more! We can experience Havaii vicariously. Filming has gone by quick this season, at least it seems that way to me on the outside (heh, not always to you i'd imagine). And it's AWESOME news about Best Buy. How great is it going to be to walk in and see A Dog's Breakfast right there on the shelf! You know you're going to spend too much money buying copies of your own movie... As if we don't know you'll pick one up the next time you walk in a Best Buy (well, at least after Sept. 1 . And colour me jealous about the signing at Best Buy! I wanna go! Damn linear distance between two points nonsense! Oh, and hey, you can Blog about Blogging about twittering for SciFi, that might make for an interesting couple of reads. And by interesting i mean utterly confusing. Sounds like you have a lot planned for hiatus. Starcrossed, or DotD, or Cursed? Don't spread Teh Hewlett to thin now, we'll need you back in one piece at some point. We can't loose our intergalactic space hero now can we? As always, it's really great hearing from you David. No one else would keep in touch with us the way you do, we really appreciate it more than you know. Thanks again, we love ya! |
Written by Icarus on 2007-07-21 01:57:17 Well, you know what the most useful tool of a writer: a deadline! It's a myth that art is created when the writer has perfect conditions, a lighthouse room with a gentle breeze off the coast as he or she pens that masterpiece, with all the time in the world to tweak it. In reality, the first draft is cranked out with the cat standing on your papers demanding dinner, while being jostled on the plane, and by sneaking off to the bathroom when you're supposed to be doing work. Up to 63,000 words on the novel now, which was at 37,000 words a month ago. The key? Pull the plug on the internet for stretches of time. At least an hour or two.
