Tacky Tourists!

I really must get things in gear on the writing front or else I'm actually going to have to have a holiday next hiatus! Ideally I want to be shooting the next film! Right now I've got a chunk of "Design of the Dead" written, but I'm a long way from a first draft. We're really getting close to a "Starcrossed" deal, which could mean that our behind-the-scenes comedy could be the next hiatus project...should have more on that shortly (which I know you've heard before!) Jane and John want me to look over "Cursed" (need to change the title, I know) which is a rather dark occult-thriller I wrote just before "A Dog's Breakfast". So right now we're a bit up in the air as to how to spend those precious months of winter.

A Dog's Breakfast seems to be doing well in downloads, from both APPLE'S iTUNES AND AMAZON UNBOX but I think the real marketing push seems to be holding off for the September DVD release. I think it's a good sign the the first thing Joe Flanigan told me about his new iPhone (can you say jealous!) was that he'd downloaded "A Dog's Breakfast" to watch on it. We'll definitely be schmoozing, promoting and marketing our puppy at next week's San Diego Comic-con. Best Buy (who will be selling the DVD...which is hugely great!) is going to host a signing on Saturday from 2pm until 3pm. Perhaps I'll see a few of you there? Looks like I may also be doing some kind of a blog thing (like I'm not already?!) for SciFi.com.

The hiatus was ridiculously perfect. Jane and I managed to escape to Hawaii and grab some heavenly peace and quiet. We snorkeled about looking at anything and everything that floated, swam or drifted by, spending most of our days flailing around like the giant sea turtles with which we shared our little corner of the Pacific Ocean. Exquisite scenery (if you're on the Big Island, take the helicopter tour, it's breath-taking!) devilishly delicious food and sun-drenched, quality Jane-time. And get this - I actually managed to read...books! The thing about working on a television series is that all you EVER read is scripts. The biggest hit of my literary vacuuming would have to be This Book Will Save Your Life A beautifully written, dryly-funny L.A. story that had me both missing & mocking my old stomping ground at the same time! Could be my favourite read of the year!

I also stumbled across The Secret Lives of Bees in the resort’s book exchange/library. I'm such a suck, but I found it a bit relentless with all the terrible things happening to terribly good people. However, I really liked the writing and the fact that I got through the thing in a day and a half goes a long way to telling you how readable it was!

In fact we've never been to any of the other islands except for the airport in Honolulu (which doesn't really count if you ask me).    I told my parents to go and THEY loved it.    My brother got married on his birthday this year (July 21) and HE is in Maui with my sis-in-law enjoying the aloha spirit, gorgeous moutain/ocean views and all that the great state of Hawaii has to offer.    I'm so glad you not only went but enjoyed it, too. It doesn't seem fair that renewal depends on ratings that come through so long after you film. The way Sci Fi does things irks me.     Anyway, I got the movie from iTunes and Amazon, and I made people watch it at Shore Leave. Paul was asked about it during his Q&A's, and I gave him a copy of the special flyer I'd made up for him to sign. The original one has his signature on your forehead.     Best of luck to you at Comic Con, and I hope the blog for Sci Fi works out. That would be a very good sign of things to come. But I bet you’re a workaholic and can’t do nothing for weeks on end, right? Because you could actually try to do nothing this hiatus and just enjoy family quality time.     Good to hear that Kate’s been back to Atlantis! I can’t wait to see Jeannie again! Two brilliant Hewletts playing two brilliant McKays – how much better can it get? *g*    I’m one of those who can’t download ADB from iTunes (not possible from iTunes Germany) or amazon.com, so I’ll wait for the DVD. I’ve never seen the movie (missed the London screening) and I didn’t read any spoilers, so I’m very curious about it - for many months now!   I wanted to thank you for your efforts concerning the international release! I’m so glad that we’ll get one eventually after your talk with MGM. I’ll probably buy the original English version of it though as I simply can’t wait much longer to see it, and you said we won’t get the international release so soon.  Which brings me to something I’ve been wondering about: Do you have any idea already if the international release means that there might be a dubbed version in Germany? Usually most films/TV shows get dubbed here. I often prefer the original versions, but many other people here who can’t speak English but are also curious to see this film (like my Mum ) would be very happy about that!   So if there really was a dubbed version I’d probably even buy both versions of the DVD… Me, a big fan? Noooo, of course not     As I won’t have seen/be able to watch ADB when you do the “twitter livechat ADB screening”, I also won’t join in the fun (have to avoid many twitter messages then I fear *g*). I can only hope that you think of repeating that event one day and might do another online screening, maybe after September. What do you think?     Hope you and Jane have lots of fun at Comic Con! Is that even possible?    I loved Time Traveler's Wife, as the protagonist's musical young adulthood reminded me so much of my own. You should try Life of Pi and the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime, whenever you have more time on your hands. It was certainly interesting it its way, with an intruiging concept, but I don't know...maybe I just didn't find the whole real-life relationship drama aspect of it as interesting as the time travel parts. Or maybe I just found those parts where he shows up and hangs out with her as she's a child amusing, charming, and vaguely creepy.

Did you attempt any snorkeling pictures?    Totally agree with your taste in books. I'm a little surprised that you haven't given in to the Harry Potter craze. It's a wonderful world and a lot of fun to read. It'll take you no time at all to go through them. Cave in!    I got three hours of sleep yesterday so I could indulge in doing nothing but reading all day.     Well, the three hours was because my dog woke me up and I was too excited to go back to sleep. She took her revenge on me for being a slug all day at 1:30am this morning when she decided to make as much of a pest of herself as possible.    Good luck prioritizing your projects. Just trust your gut. You'll know which is the right one to concentrate on.

Books! Written by Aten on 2007-07-21 17:52:28 Ooh, hey! At long last I'm through with my annoying (and boring as hell) summer reading assigned book, so I can read for fun again, too. Still, my family has this great tradition for reading Harry Potter books: My dad reads the book aloud to the rest of the family, character voices included. The next few weeks of my summer are going to rock.     Dangit, I'm two hours away from San Diego (my birthplace, in fact) and I can't afford in any sense of the word to drive down there for Comic Con. I've always wanted to go, so "extraordinarily bummed" is an understatement.

I ache just thinking about it, as I do when it comes to any and all stories like that. Now that I think about it, I am going to have to reread it. Which will have to be in like a week, when I finish reading rereading and then absorbing Deathly Hallows.     Thank you for the book recommendations, as I am trying to spend what is left of my summer absorbed in books but have so far been reading cheesy romance and absolutely horrid SciFi. Though I do have to recommend to any and all the book China Ghosts, it is by far my top read of the summer.

All these people taking existence for granted and writing about life without enough nihilism thrown it for it to be really worth anything.    Working on a tv series sounds a lot like being a history major except instead of scripts all you read are articles and Monographs. :/    Going to comic con without geeking out would be a crime!

Written by Icarus on 2007-07-21 01:57:17 Well, you know what the most useful tool of a writer: a deadline!    It's a myth that art is created when the writer has perfect conditions, a lighthouse room with a gentle breeze off the coast as he or she pens that masterpiece, with all the time in the world to tweak it.     In reality, the first draft is cranked out with the cat standing on your papers demanding dinner, while being jostled on the plane, and by sneaking off to the bathroom when you're supposed to be doing work.     Up to 63,000 words on the novel now, which was at 37,000 words a month ago. The key? Pull the plug on the internet for stretches of time. At least an hour or two.

After having taken a helicopter tour, my oldest now want to learn to fly a helicopter so she can give the tours.    I'm one for 'Cursed'! I adore a good occult-thriller.

I can't wait to have the DVD in my hands.     Right now I'm in the 4th book in the Dune series. I've never read a series so slowly before, but it's well worth the time I've put into it.

Comic Con Written by tsaxlady on 2007-07-21 01:46:12 Glad to see you will be making the trip to Comic Con again this year.   I promised friends that can't go I would blog about Comic Con this year.    Tales from the Road and All That Jazz...    Would love to see you in the autograph line but getting tickets for that can be crazy at Comic Con. Will be at the Atlantis panel for sure.
