Oh no cowboy!
Oh no cowboy
You and I finally get the whole Blogger.com thing figured out...you've all been incredibly supportive and signed up, and created blogs or whatever other nonsense you need to do just to comment on mine, and now what do I go and do?  I change everything again!   I've told you all before that I am a nerd.  Now you're paying the price for not listening.  Or FOR listening for that matter.
I'm telling you though, there is a master plan.  I've been playing around with some new Web based software that I've got to say I am loving!  How great is this whole Open Source thing (I'm using Joomla for those nerdy enough to care)?!   For the time being anyway, you know, until something goes terribly wrong and I find myself, once again, way over my head.  The point being that I'm using this nerdly (yes I spelt it like that on purpose) (spelt too!) little dGeek.com domain to try and tie all the pieces of my involvement on the Internet  together into one cohesive site.  I think the  "wired" term would be "Portal".  I'm hoping that this way I can disseminate information and collate all the feedback into one single unified force (yes, it is a force for good!)  I come armed with a long weekend, plus a couple of (if I may say so) well deserved days off.  Much to the chagrin of my lovely girlfriend Jane (I keep telling her it's actually work!) I'm spending that time trying to get this place in order.  So, instead of dribbling information out in all Internet directions, I will have a tidy efficient home where you can all come in and grab a cool drink (from your own fridge thank you very much...this glass of fine Snoqualimie Chardonnay from the Columbia Valley is mine!) and settle in for the duration...I'm very excited about all the things that we've got percolating and can't wait to share them with you and in some cases actually get you involved...if that suits you!

First off, I'm trying to figure out how to decorate this online pad.  I really like the idea of a man lying face down in a bowl of dogfood as our "logo".  What do you think?  Anyone want to give it a go?  I'll include a few photos that you can download and play with in photoshop or whatever blows your "art" up and makes you brilliant.

Prepare to commune...or crash and lose everything...whatever comes first!

D!

Joomla! Gotta love it. The greatest CMS ever invented. So much you can do and so easy to use too.

Nice choice Mr. Hewlett!

Sad to say I've just discovered your little community here.

So can someone give me an idea of where on blogger I can find David's blog? Like, maybe, David? *g*

Or anybody. I'm not good at Photoshop so I'll pass on trying the logo but the man in the dog food bowl sounds great.

I'd stick with jpegs or gifs. Most folks use Microsquish IE and it sometimes doesn't like to play nice with non-commonly used image formats. :x
Logos and artwork and blogs, oh my!

The logo idea sounds perfect. =) Here's hoping you have those pics for us aspiring logo artists, 'cause I'd love to give it a go along with the crowd. =) Y'want JPEGs, PNGs or raw PhotoShop/Paint Shop Pro files?
Written by lttledvl on 2006-09-10 22:00:25
Good logo idea! I don't have photoshop, I have jasc paint shop pro. Very similar with all the associated bells & whistles.

Liked your opening comments. I have some K in my frig (a small company that makes a great hard cider), but shall have to pass on cracking one open this evening as I have a thing called work in the morning. Communing shall now commence...

well with that hat you'll be my sec best cowboy (sorry no. 1 is already taken... but you can try to make it up :D)

and pic to play arpound? always!

but as you see on this "late" comment. I'm not that excited abotu thsis "portal" ;) too much to scole and my antipathy for Joomla! is growing every time I'm here.. But hey I won't complain about your work and efford you put in here (it's really much work. I dunno how good the software is, how much code you have to write at all an if if you use the editor or a program for that etc. besides I hardly can imagine you having actually a life besides Jane and SGA?). I'm really glad you wanne get in touch (or better "in click") with some of the fandom geeks (or simply weird people who have nothing better to do then beeing on this site)

*always write weird and too long comments*

How fabulous is joomla?! have to admit I was so geekily (new word - use it freely) amused to see you've discovered joomla. We've put together our own personal site plus working on my hospitals' sites as well with it. Love open source, love joomla (maybe even mambo).

(I work at a vet hospital so special sympathy for Mars' cone of silence).

Seems headgear runs in the family. ;)
In training...

I'm re-learning photoshop at school. I've never been anywhere near professional with it, though (class projects don't count and I haven't got the program on my home computer :sigh ). I used to work with Macromedia Dreamweaver, but I haven't got that here, either and my skills went down the tubes over time :cry . To be totally honest, if I could do anything at all to help, alert me.
Photoshop is my life...literally.

I wanted to say you and Kate did a fabulous job together. I felt so sorry for Rodney through all that mess with Rod, and the whole siblings not talking to each other for years really does hit home for me. My brother and I spent 17 years on opposite sides of the globe once without seeing each other. It was a bit awkward at first, let me tell you. You and Kate really hit that emotional note brilliantly.
Oooo pictures to play with!
Written by lemonchicken on 2006-09-08 20:09:07
Cant wait to start playing around with those photos. Definately want to give it a try! Whats our deadline?

Oh, and nice hat!

Though I've only got paint--yes, my nerdly skills are in need of some dire updating--I would love to see your photos. Makes me wonder who's face it will be smushed in that kibble... 8) Looking forward to your pictures!

I like the idea of the logo, it sounds cool. Also, just as an aside, I happen to reside in the Columbia Valley, and I had to smile when you mentioned our Chardonnay. Thanks for the grin!

Welcome to your new home :) I'd love to have a play with photoshop - bring on the pictures!

Thank you so much for taking the time to connect with your fans like this, esepcially on your weekend off. It's either brave or crazy (or maybe both), but know that it's very much appreciated!

LOVE the logo idea!

Don't use photoshop cos I broke, but I use freeware instead!

Can't wait to see what else you've got in store for this place!!!

Can I ask who the guy with his face down in dog food is going to be? lol!
Oh yays!
Written by groovekittie on 2006-09-08 10:09:01
I am a huge fan of opensource as I am severly broke. lol Joomla is fun, but at my job, I use Mambo if that makes sense to anyone. :P

I can't wait to get my hands on the photo, although my photo manipulating 'skillz' are hardly up to snuff compared to some of your fans. :D
did someone say Photoshop?

Okay, since EVERYONE has signed up, I give in to the peer pressure and have signed up too - I now have so many accounts all over the net that even I don't know where I'm signed up anymore. But, I suppose, one day when I track myself down (it's always a fun thing to search your name through google) I will be surprised at all the fun and out of the way places I have joined. So! Here I am!

I am also now matching your photo with you, your dog and laptop, except I am in bed, with my (not apple) laptop and my cat trying desperately to sit on top of me, despite the fact that it is physically impossible.

Um. Okay, I will shut up now.

I am sure there are people who are way more qualified than I, but I think this weekend I will give that "guy face down in a dog bowl" logo a try...
Written by strivaria on 2006-09-07 23:29:50
*looks around* Nifty place ya got here. 8) Can't blame you for tinkering with new code toys though, I know I'd be doing the same if only my interest in it would perk back up. That said, GIMP has caught my fancy at the moment and I'd love to give a shot at that logo idea. So yeah, if you've already got some pictures in mind for the project, post 'em.

Now to go poke around some more.

Nice new digs! Having everything in one place makes it much easier and I am sure Blogger will survive without those of us who started up just to comment.

Part of me is wondering if all these moves are just part of a devious psychological experiment to see just how many of us will follow and how long it will take us all to migrate over here. It would be a brilliant study, just give it a ridiculous name like "The Internet Sheep Phenomena" or some such. Speaking as one of the sheep: Baaa.

And now - to go find new ways to not do billable work - the forums!!
Written by Linz on 2006-09-07 22:30:17
I'll take a stab at making art! I may have to recruit a few more Photoshop wizards to help me out though ;)

Bring on the pictures!
This is a fabulous idea
Written by Erynn on 2006-09-07 22:23:23
I think it's great that you're consolidating everything in one place. It will most likely save you a lot of headaches along down the road, and make it easier for the obs... err... focused among us to follow your projects and give you ego-strokage for your work.

Please tell Jane we all appreciate her patience while you're getting this thing together.

I love the idea of a photoshop-mishmash for a logo. I'm also pleased by the request-a-screening format! I hope you'll be willing to do a screening for all the writing/film/acting/cinema studies majors at my university! (Don't worry, we're in a big city, I'm sure a lot of non-students would be thrilled to attend as well.)

And thanks so much for taking time out of your life to connect with your fans like this. David Hewlett, how are you so awesome?

Post photos! While there are undoubtedly much better wizards than I at the task, my work my work for a temporary amusement.

As a fan, I want to thank you for taking time to do this. It really means a lot to everyone when you show that you care!

Consolidation, percolation, involvement, cohesion... far too many syllables for nearly two in the morning! No, it's all good - and hey, one more RSS feed to spam up my f-list.

One thought, which might rightly fill you with horror - any chance of setting up a chatroom onsite here? Which ::scrolls up:: ...you've probably got in hand anyway. Or, the traffic would crash this place off the buffers, or Oh God, what about moderators, too much like hard work! Etc. But is it something you've thought about? One more insomniac diversion would be so nifty!

Oh - and hello! Looking forward like billyoh to you coming back to Blighty next Feb! Peg2 is going to be like a failed AA reunion. Bring spare liver.

Oh yes, many people signed up to blogger just to reply to your blog. Myself included. I had to, I was feeling left out..lol.

That idea for a logo sounds great. Even though I have photoshop, I never use it...even so, I'd love to see the pictures.. ;) :)
Written by runtotorun on 2006-09-07 19:48:57
It's a good idea to consolidate all your bits and pieces here. I like the look of the site and the way it makes you want to explore further, which is how I came upon this post (ooh, a "more" button) ;) If you're still looking for people to attempt designing a logo, I'd be happy to give it a go. :)
Written by slodwick on 2006-09-07 19:27:01
Oh, goodness! The idea of having photos to muck about with in Photoshop is terribly exciting!

That logo idea sounds hillarious. Ah, visual humor. I might try something of my own, but sadly my Photoshopping skills are limited.

(Utter randomness: That "nerdly" bit made me think of a line from Eureka..."Yes, he said 'invisibling'." Heehee...wordplay funny.)
