After my first email to amazon.co.uk only gained me the C3PO response, along the lines of, erm "WE DON'T SELL THIS, LOOK ELSEWHERE!" Hello didn't I say "You don't sell this but couldya?" I decided to try again, I have to say I was extremely polite in my first email and I think this confused the mechanical mind of the computer brain, which replied to me with the "your enquiry has been dealt with" email... So I went for 'polite' sarcasm! Haha Yes I can be polite even when I'm being mean! I basically said "hello your not listening to me, please don't do that this time or I might kick your ass!" Okay I pointed out that they totally didn't meet my query and I wanted them to do me a huge favour and STOCK ADB thankyou, I could possibly have been fobbed off, but at least I got the response I asked for which was for my request to be looked into, not ignored, misunderstood or thrown in the trash? Here's what they said....

Dear Kez (hahha I changed that bit!)

Thank you for sending Amazon.co.uk your suggestion.

Please be informed that we normally add the items to our catalogue,
based on the request made by publisher, authors and customers.

I will be sure to pass your message on to the appropriate department
in our company for consideration. Customer feedback such as yours
helps us to continue improving the selection and service we
provide. We appreciate the time you've taken to write to us.

If you have any other suggestions for us or would like to make a
comment at another time, please don't hesitate to send us an
e-mail.

Guess what I'm doing tomorrow? Kidding I'm totally going to wait and see what Mr Hewlett finds out from the foxes and lions (can't tell you how long it took me to work out what the 'animals' had to do with the DVD release?) I'm so thick sometimes!

I rarely use Amazon as there are usually a lot more sites that are a) cheaper and b) generally just better, faster and nicer to deal with. For this film, however, I made an exception only to be sent the following email:

Dear Customer

Thank you for contacting Amazon.co.uk.

We looked into the website anfd found that unfortunately, we are
currently unable to offer this item, as we're currently out of stock
of "A Dog's Breakfast" and we are not able to guarantee when or if
it will be available for purchase on our website. For this reason,
the item is currently not listed on our website.

Please note that our supply of popular items is sometimes limited
and some products sell out quickly. We are very sorry that you were
not able to place your order before our supply ran out.

You could also search our Auctions
(http://s1.amazon.co.uk/exec/varzea/subst/home/home.html/) or zShops
(http://s1.amazon.co.uk/exec/varzea/subst/home/fixed.html/) sites to
see if anyone is selling the item there.

We hope that you are successful in obtaining this item.

Thank you for shopping at Amazon.co.uk.

I was obviously unimpressed at this so I called them up and spent about ten minutes on hold only to be told 'No, I don't think we'll be selling it. Why don't you buy it from Amazon.com?' :roll

When I heard ADB was available for pre-order, I was so excited and headed straight to Amazon.ca. Silly me, I should have known better - nothing ever comes out in Amazon.ca before it's been on Amazon.com for a month. :roll

So then I went and pre-ordered the movie at Amazon.com, simply assuming that it would just take a while for the other Regions to be released and thought that was that.

Only releasing in the US? No plans for international distribution? THE HELL. I have no problem paying extra fees to ship my stuff across the border (I do it for everything else: movies, books, comics, etc., after all), but I'm in Canada and can, you know, actually *play* the movie in my DVD player.

That's just stupid. There are so many people who want to see this movie! They can't just sell it in the US! That's just plain wrong. It's discrimination I say! DOWN WITH ALL OF THEM!!! okay, okay, maybe not all of them, but I'm still mad. I'll send amazon some annoyed emails or whatever it will take.

Amazon emailed, MGM & Fox next.
I can't believe they didn't tell you your own film was available, that's mad!!

Amazon.co.uk Stock reply for me... still, I did suggest that they take notes of the contacts they get about this:

We appreciate that you've taken the time to send us your suggestion.

I have passed along your comments to our developers; customer
feedback like yours is essential in helping them determine what
additional features our visitors and customers want most.

As soon as a studio lets us know that it will be releasing a film,
we try to make that title available for pre-order in our
catalogue. If you're interested in purchasing a specific film, you
may search for the title to see if it has been listed on our website.

If you'd like to see a list of films that are "due for release soon",
click on the "What's New" link on the menu bar of our DVD homepage.

Simply select the appropriate link under the heading "New & Future
Releases" to view the list of DVD releases for the current week and
future weeks.

I've sent this to amazon.co.uk

"I'd be really interested in getting a DVD of 'A Dog's breakfast'. On Amazon US it's at number 15, and it's still in pre-release

It's made by David Hewlett (of Stargate - and that shifts some DVDs!)

Please, would you consider asking the suppliers to release a R2 DVD, or at worst making some R1 versions available as imports?

Form letter from playusa.com....
Written by Murk on 2007-06-26 14:10:08
I got the form letter (very promptly) from playusa.com

"We currently have no information regarding 'A Dog's Breakfast',
however it may be that we are able to provide this product in the
future. New items will be added to our website as soon as release
dates are confirmed by our suppliers, so it is worth checking the site
periodically."...

Now for amazon.
Ok, now I'm angry

Pleaaaaaaaaase, don't tell me us little frogs will NEVER see ADB ? I'm not blaming you of course, but this is so unfair from the distributors ! I'm mean, there is a huge demand, why are they shy of this ? They know you have a big audience all over the world and they know we're faithful, we don't wanna download it, we wanna buy it !!! Merde alors !
Got a reply from Amazon.co.uk
Written by SomeCallMeLaz on 2007-06-26 13:41:44
This is what I received, some bits snipped for length.

Unfortunately, we are currently unable to offer this item, as we're currently out of stock of "David Hewlett's A Dog's Breakfast" and we are not able to guarantee when or if it will be available for purchase on our website. For this reason, the item is currently not listed on our website.

I also browsed Amazon.com and found that due to heavy demand this item is currently unavailable from there also. I apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Please note that our supply of popular items is sometimes limited and some products sell out quickly. We are very sorry that you were not able to place your order before our supply ran out. We suggest checking our website from time to time to see if this item has come back in stock or if it is available from a third-party seller through Amazon.co.uk Marketplace.

You could also search our Auctions or zShops sites to
see if anyone is selling the item there.

Warmest regards

Customer Service
Amazon.co.uk

It does have a form letter-ish feeling. I suspect Amazon may have outsourced (at least some of) their customer service and the person has picked the best form letter for the situation and tweaked it, not realising they've never had the movie in the first place. Still, chances are someone somewhere has noticed the multiple emails from multiple fans looking for this film. We might even get Amazon customer services interested themselves!

last part of my last post didn't get published ... weird so I need to finish 'cause it looks funny.

The last bit was stating that the funky letters at the bottom there were of me taking out my fustration. I also had a silly question: Are the DVD's I use the exact same as what they use overseas?? Because I'd buy a bunch and send them out to anyone who wanted one who didn't live in North America.

Yeah the the our lovely neighbours to the south are still very selfish and think the corporate world revoles around them. I'm drafting a letter to amazon.com as we speak.. well after this.. hehe

Please understand me that I don't mean every single citizen in the US is like this, but seems that the big gahonazs are more and more like this.

There are how many other countries in the world?? How many other people in the world who are as excited as North Americans to see ADB?? That's what I thought.

Don't worry. It'll turn out well in the end. Us squirrels will start our chattering and not even Amazon can resist our cute, fluffy tails and big, brown eyes (or green in my case). So we'll fix this! :)
Don't blame you

:( I'd be peeved too! And no international release? Though, I'm in the US, I feel for all the other fans too! Hopefully the people in charge of this will soon realize (not doubt us fans will take care of that!) that they need to handle this market too. As for downloading it-I'll wait for the best quality possible. Its worth it!
I'm really upset!
Written by Phönix89 on 2007-06-26 09:58:00
I'm really shocked. They didn't tell you about the availability of ADB as a download? That's insulting! :upset
But, that's for me more important: ADB won't be available in Europe?! :eek
It was clear to me, that it won't be translated in German (for ADB I will watch in English ;) The Original is always better than the synchro) but I WANT to get at least one exemplar.
Already read a mail to amazon.com and amazon.de Hope, it will work...
I promise you, we're totally behind you and please keep us up-to-date.

Mad Dog Time - Mad Dog Idea!
Written by Icewoman on 2007-06-26 09:55:12
Yes, this totally sucks! David, I hope in your recent phone conversation you were able to get some of this sorted out. I am beyond furious! I realize this has got to be –on some levels- about money, but it’s about the film too!!! Hey, I’m not going to pretend I know anything about the movie distribution business – I don’t. But films like these are made to be seen – by everyone – by anyone who wants to see them, right!

So, here is my mad-dog idea (and I mean that in the sense of crazy, not angry) – should MGM decide on just a limited international release or whatever, why not start an “Adopt a Squirrel-Minion” campaign or a “Foreign Exchange Squirrel” program?? I, for one, would be willing to purchase an extra copy of the DVD and ship it to someone who, for whatever reason, can’t get the film in their country, province, region, territory, etc. It’s about the film, right? I mean folks can't rave about the film if they can't even see it.

Now, I realize this might not be the perfect answer for forcing MGM's hand. However, if they agree to expand their distribution, but just won’t go far enough… at least this gets the film out to some people in those areas who might then start a campaign of their own… against MGM and the distributors to say “Hey, we’re out here and we want the damn movie!”

OK, going back to my own rose-colored-glass of a world now. It was the shiny, happy thought that counted, right?
*throws hands up walks off in a huff*
Written by kez193 on 2007-06-26 09:42:02
Having heard that there NO PLANS for an international release of ADB I decided to put away my "oh well" attitude and strike while the iron is hot and bothered, ok I emailed amazon.co.uk to ask ever so politely (as reccomended by SomeCallMeLaz) if they could see they're way clear to selling a region 2 version of the DVD. Well I got a reply this morning that could quite well of been written by a machine? Hmmm? Okay I thought, perhaps I was a little TOO polite, maybe I came across more "simpering idiot" than respectful fan looking for her FIX! Well I've given it another go, adding in just a hint of sarcasm and a smidge of hysteria? I did say that this was my last ditch (desperate) attempt before *I threw my hands up and walked off in a huff* (thats not impolite is it?). I await my second (possibly automated response) then I'm going to ask to speak to the manager, that usually works for me in reallife non internetty situations! I will not give up, there are far TOO many David filled DVD's out there that I can not have because I refuse to emigrate to the US or buy a multi-region dvd player? oooh?

Ofcourse I have plan B to fall back on(also known as the Treed Murray manoeuvre), FINDING a Region 0 dvd? Fingers crossed folks!
Written by MdGateFan on 2007-06-26 09:23:16
I am not sure what I, as a US customer can do to help, but I am with everyone in spirit. Maybe go for a visit overseas and mail a letter from there?

I really do not understand what the problem is. Does it really cost that much to burn those things, to code them for the different regions that they won't do it unless they are fairly sure they will sell a large number of DVDs? I would think that given how cheap those things are to make (the DVDs - not the flims) most of the money made is profit.
Written by ozziebabe on 2007-06-26 09:01:36
It makes me really mad when they do this. I wrote to both MGM and Fox and politely demanded that they have proper International release date. I want to walk into Target or where ever and buy this movie from an Australian shop. I don't want to download and miss out on the extras! :(
that is so unfair
Written by alison_974 on 2007-06-26 08:51:30
why do they keep doing this to us.
they should just release the dvd as a region code free dvd and us overseas "apperntly minority" can just order them from america or something.
no offense to you good, non-annoying americans, but sometimes it seems like america thinks they're the centre of the world, well, when tv and movies are concerned.
i guess it's our own countries as well, like in australia we only just finished season 2 of atlantis last week... i think that is the australian tv channels fault though, they're so lazy... and cheap.
woah... rant much, sorry guys.... so who can i send a ranty email to?

I did kind of want to download ADB today so we could watch it tonite and not wait til the DVD gets here in Sept. Yeah, patience is NOT one of my virtues :)

Okay. Apparently they've taken away the ability to download. I guess they weren't supposed to allow that until September 18th? :?

This might explain why it seems so half-assed to you. MGM probably hadn't intended to start, yet.

Take this one step at a time. We'll plot our attack. Keep pushing the US release and strategize for the rest of the world.

I bet we could figure out some backdoor method to do this.

And, in happier news, it's doing really well for something released so half-assed.

I can't believe they did that! *hugs* I hope from your latest Twitter that you have something sorted out. MGM Aren't doing themselves any favours really. It will be only a matter of time before poor quality copies find their way into the international market. Also given the relatively Huge push in the UK I am VERY suprised. I do have a mulit region DVD player but Im going to have to wait up to 36 days for it to arrive in the international mail as it is. As for downloading...yessh, this is me *slowest ever snarkastic clap for MGM*,

I'm here in the UK and have been telling my friends about your movie and MGM aren't going to release it here? I hope your new Twitter 'great talks with MGM' means you've knocked some sense into them. Having said that - we've got region free DVD players and I could ask the parents to get me a US copy when they go to Florida next year (along with the copy they'll be getting for themselves!). I'll get to watch it somehow lol

Which shows it as available - but I'm not sure of anything beyond that.

It allowed me to click "pre-order" and brought up the next page with no errors or text saying it was not available. I found the URL (above) on Google by searching "A Dog's Breakfast", currently the seventh hit down from the top.

Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Fox has a long history of being idiots about distribution and programming so I am not all that surprised that they are involved in this idiocy. I think it is ridiculous that they are not trying to distribute this internationally. At the very least they would make a lot of money off of it so I do not understand why they don't realize that there are other countries.

This is what drives illegal downloads. Show me a movie that's not released in Australia and I'll show you thousands of Aussie computers with illegal downloads. I've a friend in Malta and she can never get anything.

Written by Shawna on 2007-06-25 20:22:20
I just looked at the download link and it says the item's not available, nor does it give a price or date that it will be available, so I don't know what's going on there. Yeah, this is unimpressive distribution for such a big company as MGM. As far as international distribution, does MGM hold those rigts and just aren't choosing to use them? Because if not, you could distribute it yourself, theoretically, as a last resort. There are certainly ways of making a downloadable version available to everyone no matter where they are, and you could set up some sort of paypal system. Kinda ghetto, yeah, but if worst comes to worst, it's an option. Plus, you wouldn't have to give a cut to a distributer.

MGM and FOX are playing their big business schemes again!! This squirrel is behind you a hundred percent and hoping you will provide some key email addresses in order to begin the bombardment!! :upset You are an amazing actor/director/person and you deserve WAY better than this.

Cheers, Dani

Gahhh!

So I went on there to bitch and they fixed the download error. I still am going to complain for the Region 1 "only" release. That is not playing fair. MGM really wants to piss off the fans, eh????????
Written by Dew on 2007-06-25 19:28:57
Personally I didn't see where it was the full release so I can't tell you what might have gone wrong. I did email someone I know that still works at Amazon. They've not got access to all the details but they said if it was the full release for download it was done in error and should certainly be corrected now. They, Amazon, can not only lose a lot of money but they don't want to risk losing customers for such a snafu.

But I have to admit seeing the trailer on there now is cool and so not safe for work. Makes me laugh it's something Amazon sells but if they're employees were to get caught watching it they could be fired. Stupid Amazon.

(And yes I'm a former employee.)

Just put up a review at the Unbox listing, said I was gonna wait for the "real" DVD, with all the extras! But I emailed them, and asked why it was available now when the release date wasn't stil September -- wasn't that illegal?? ;)

Also put in a good word for us Mac users, and the overseas folks too.

Let us minions, squirrels, er, fans know what else we can do to help!

I think it's time to start making it very clear to MGM & FOX that "the rest of the world" is not to be ignored.

but...i thought the rest of the world wanted to be just like the US? listen, if y'all would just let us annex you, you could enjoy the finer points of this great nation. like amazon.com. and an open willingness to allow others to think just like we do.

I wondered if you knew about the downlaodable version since you hadn't mentioned it. But I only learned about it just before going to work last night. As for th emails, we'll take care of it, don't worry.
Written by animallover on 2007-06-25 19:22:35
I really hope it becomes available to the rest of the world Especially AUSTRALIA!!
YEs, I will do a letter to Amazon telling them of my "unhappiness" with them.

David I know you will do everything you can to make this happen. We know it is not your fault
Download no longer available
Written by amyfo on 2007-06-25 19:02:56
I just called Amazon to find out why they took the download down and they said it was removed for one of two reasons. 1- Amazon took it down to update it. Or 2 - the studio made them remove it from the site. I hope it is just the first option and they are updating it so people outside the US can download it too!

Okay. I've written Amazon, and am looking for an MGM address.

I sent a nice little email to Amazon.co.uk requesting they offer the wonderful David Hewlett's wonderful directing debut, A Dog's Breakfast for sale on Region 2 dvd.

Well, not quite, but I did include the pertinent information such as the title, director's name and the fact is is available from Amazon US so they can't claim they don't know what it is. I also told them I expected they would receive emails from other fans.

The most important thing is to say polite, folks, don't let your pissed off-ness shine through because you're emailing people who don't care about you, or the movie - they care about the fact they're having a bad day, traffic was a nightmare, the kid's got flu etc etc.

Don't give anyone a reason to delete your email or throw your letter in the bin. If you're nice, people will help you. Trust me, some of my customers get pushed to the back of the queue for days and others get diamond service ;)

For an industry that works with some of the more advanced technology available it never ceases to amaze me that they aren't more forward moving with regards to their fans. It's disturbing when we, the fans, have to stand around and wait in the dark for the people 'in charge' to screw in a light bulb. Geez... do they need help? I'm sure there are more than a few of us who could help them convert the film to the necessary format(s) for international distribution. But, no.... we are very patiently, because we adore you, waiting for TPTB to make it available to us - a large *global* market. Um... ranting? Sorry. I'll be good, now.
Standing by...

While I personally am happy--DVD ordered, don't want to download--I'll be happy to add my voice to the cause if it will help. I'd be horribly disappointed if I couldn't get a copy! Let us know what we can do, even those of us who aren't being shut out. Maybe especially those of us who aren't being shut out!

Put the nail gun down and step away. Deep breaths.

I'm on a Mac, so the download won't work for me either, but my PC pal says the download is unavailable for her as well right now. While the download would be nice, I'm happy to wait for the DVD in September. Easier to watch a movie with friends on the big TV instead of huddled around the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro.

At least it's not up on iTunes movies, too. Grateful for small favors and whatnot.
Written by jbpiggy on 2007-06-25 18:37:56
so far i have come up with the following just now need to know who to send it to:

A Dog's Breakfast has been a great success winning awards and fans around the globe.

When it came to promoting the film the director and his fans have done the work not the distributors.

The fact that it is being released only in the US has caused a storm of protest on the movies official site. (Storm fronted by the director himself, closely backed up by the star Mars whose heals are dogged by the fans.) A Dog's Breakfast is set to be the best independent film of 2007, at least give the fans the respect and credit they deserve and grant an international release instead of upsetting the very people that helped promote the film.

To be honest the US entertainment industry gives a shit about the rest of the world and it always has been and probably will be. If a tv show doesn't hit in teh US it doesn't matter if all europe (for example) loves it and it's a big sale.
About ADB I doubt it that german amazon release it, maybe UK (that's what I am hoping for, so there is at least the chance of import or ebay). But it's hard enough to get tv show out here that is dubbed and sucessfully aired here if they don't want it. I wait for The Outer lImits or Space Above and Beyond. A lot of people write them but there is either the standard reply of "we haven't planned to release it" or the newest thing is no reply at all.

I love to try (and do) but I just wanne say I don't have much hopes for a RC2 release. they may have it at amazon.com and france/uk amazon gets it as us imports.
Amazon.ca

I e-mailed Amazon.ca yesterday asking if they'd be selling it, and they said no and to buy it through amazon.com :(

Relax and take a deep breath

I'll be bombarding them with emails asking when (not if) it'll be available in other regions.

Written by libitina on 2007-06-25 18:34:43
All I'm getting at the download site is the preview clip, and I'm registered in the U.S.

I did stop by and pre-order while checking out their mischief, though, so not all is lost.

Well this does indeed have me quite angry for your sake. I'd say your long-hoped for distribution deal has gone a wee bit sideways - but never fear, the Squirrels are here. As others in this industry have found out, it's not really a good idea to mess with the fans. We mess back. So. It would appear there is some high-level chewing out to do. You let us know who, and we shall do so. In the mean time I shall be starting with Amazon (this item is not available?!) and MGM (ever consider making a phone call, boys??!!).

Just do me one favor and...no more with the nail gun today, huh?
I've sent an email to Amazon.com
Written by Annie on 2007-06-25 18:32:25
Okies, I was pissed off enough just now when I couldn't download ADB from Amazon.com that I sent them an email. I asked:

1) Are they planning on releasing the DVD in countries other than America?
2) If so, when will it be available to buy here in England?
3) Why is the download feature for the DVD locked down to the United States only?
4) Will they be allowing people living in countries other than the United States to download the DVD?

I said that I have already purchased the DVD as I am lucky enough to have a multi region DVD player but, having said that, I would like to be able to purchase the DVD in my own countries format.

I ended it by asking them to please let me know the answers to my questions as I know of others who would purchase the DVD if it was available to the whole world and not just to the people of the United States.
That's Amazon for you
Written by moose on 2007-06-25 18:19:43
They do often think they're on their own planet.

Then again, couldn't the problem be with the distributor? Wouldn't they have had to make the film available to Amazon?

Have you put the nail gun down?
Written by watcher652 on 2007-06-25 18:19:17
I'm so sorry how what should have been a happy event is turning out to be such a frustrating one for you. Take a deep breath.

I'm still really happy about the DVD release in Sept, but I'm a region 1 buyer. I want all the other regions to be able to buy it, too. Good heavens, you'd think at least the UK should be able to buy it, not to slight the rest of the world.

I'll send out the news with a note that more concrete plans are in the making. Waiting for more instructions, sir!
Written by APMC4CB on 2007-06-25 18:18:06

I don't blame ya for being p*ssed. I can't beleive they didn't tell you! That's just plain wrong, and bad business. I'm glad it's doing well in DVDs and Downloads, but still it was wrong of them not to inform you. And i know quite a few peeps over at GW that i told about the Download the other day were surprised too, and upset because they don't live in the stats like me and can't even download it. They've all preordered DVDs to be shipped overseas.

Anyways, we're behind you 100%, tell us what to do (you have already, duh me) and we'll do it!
