It would appear that I really need my weekends. I should know this by now. I've been doing Stargate Atlantis for four years. By this time of the year we're all about ready for a nice long summer hiatus. Not that life on Atlantis isn't a thrill a minute. The hours can wear at you, though, especially when half of your "free time" is spent learning lines. Let's just say that this is the time of my seasonal switch to decaf. ;-)
Friday was a massive 10 1/2 page day on "Be All My Sin's Remember'd"... which, in case you didn't catch my tone, is evil! Up until now a big day would have been about 8 1/2 pages! And as the lovely and talented Tapping pointed out "it's all McKay, all day!". Still, when you've got Andy Makita directing and Amanda, Mitch Pleggi and Michael Beach serving as the glazed-eyed listeners to my endless stream of techno-speak, you really can't lose. Mitch has this incredible ability to crack me up, whether he intends to or not! I pride myself on being able to mess around until seconds before we roll and then pull it together for "Action". This is not the case when I'm dealing with Mitch. I seem to have the same effect on Amanda. And Michael just has the good sense to not look at any of us when we're sucking in our faces trying to hold it together. We've all really missed having Mitch around. Turns out that it's been a year since he was last on Atlantis. Of course he's been off working with Taye Diggs and being a big time network TV star...as he should be. I'll tell you though, it was great having him back. Even if he ruined every scene I was in ;-) I'm writing a part for him in the our next film, tentatively titled "Design of the Dead". He's such a good sport about what I have planned for him! We'll see how he handles it when I actually follow through with a script! Anyway, Friday was another one of those magically, mirthful, miserably-long days that somehow still don't seem long enough.
A forty minute wait to cross the border on my return home was a bit of a shock though. A few more of those Friday nights and I think we'll be heading back to civilization! We have taken the plunge and given up the Kitsilano townhouse that we rented from my father. Kate's going to take it over for the summer, for about a quarter as much rent. It pays to be the youngest! "The Cape", as mummy refers to our part of Washington, is just humming these days with sun and sea worshiping seasonal inhabitants. `Stupid tourists ;-) I pretty much avoid the beachy zones except during weekdays when it's a little slower and as the case was today...wetter. That said, Sunday was spent roaming through ankle high water as warm as a bath and chasing little fishies about in the blazing sun, with Mars and the hounds (Lester and Maggie).
I had meant to get this chatty blog all up and pretty for you on the weekend. However, all of a sudden it was 5 am Monday morning. There was a terrible noise and incessant chatter of unearthly voices. I tried to wake Jane to warn her that all hell had broken loose. I tried swatting at the hideous fuzzy bat-eared creature haunting my slumber, and bobbing before my sleep crusted eyes like some kind of sick demented teddy bear. Then I woke enough to realize that I was trying to "snooze" Mars instead of the alarm clock. Jane, thankfully, didn't notice a thing. My long and rambling point? It was a nasty early call this morning. Am I feeling sorry for myself!? Not really, as my first scene was to act beside a lovely female replicator. And the not quite so lovely Nykl. Still, she managed to look lovely and spit out the techno-speak like the pro she is. And he managed to mangle his lines and not bump into too much of the furniture. I was out of there in a couple of hours, thank you very much! So, after a late lunch with the lovely Loughman it was back to learning scripts for a few hours. I am now armed with a basic understanding of what I'm supposed to say for the rest of the week and I've just got back from another 25 minutes of running...otherwise known as torture. Photo shoots and international press junket this weekend, so I've got to look my best...that said I also need the use of my legs...hello legs? I can't feel my legs?!
Peace!

Written by shepsangel on 2007-06-14 18:20:29 Firstly congrats on the Spacey, there really was no competition there. Huh? Weekend? What's that? I haven't had a day off in 3 weeks, so I know how you feel about needing weekends. Fortunately I get this saturday off, and then I have to go another two weeks. I love my job Nice to find a fellow runner, I'm currently training for the London Marathon next year, so I can definately sympathise with you there.
| Spacey Awards Written by Menolly on 2007-06-11 02:39:28 Congratulations on your brand new Spacey Award!!!!! I loved the acceptance speech short, sweet and right to the point. | OT: Where's the next enrtry? Congratula Written by watcher652 on 2007-06-11 02:09:24 Sorry, I couldn't wait for you to make another entry. I just had to say Congratulations! for winning the Spacey for Favortie TV character. Well deserved I say. I still don't get why "24" is considered genre, but hey, you beat them all! And so did Atlantis! Yay for our team! Space news release here. Maybe this isn't so off topic after all. It was part of your weekend. | Written by crownglass39 on 2007-06-10 20:27:34 Boy, M&M are really doing their damned best to ruin Atlantis, aren't they? | Written by nunshavingfun on 2007-06-10 01:46:29 "I can't feel my legs! I HAVE NO LEGS!" | Written by crownglass39 on 2007-06-09 07:04:40 The doggie snooze button doesn't work quite so well, at least he doesn't drool on you if you don't get up quickly enough. Count yourself lucky, my cats have come preloaded with "Pinpoint Bladder Finder 2.0" and can sit on mine with unerring accuracy if I don't get up quickly enough. | Written by Sulien on 2007-06-09 02:36:55 Running? Gah! I had enough of that in the Army, thanks! Besides, remember what happened to Jim Fixx? As for the tourists, I know exactly what you mean (I live in Ocean Shores, WA). | Written by everly_dawn on 2007-06-07 19:28:16 Wow, I feel inclined to say thanks for just being you. Your blog always has the ability to brighten my day if just for a little bit. I don't know why it continues to amaze me, it shouldn't, but it does. Today was one of those days at work where you say..."and why do I do this for a living again?" I'm sure you've had them, everyone does at some point or another. LOL It's summer reading time and I'm a Youth Services Librarian in a public downtown library. Need I say more? This is the time of year where teachers sigh in relief and librarians put on the battle gear and brace themselves for the impact of stampeding children! And BTW...You aren't the only one that does things like trying to "snooze" your pet in a sleepy daze. I remember a cat I used to have that got that treatment several times...because she liked to sleep ON the alarmclock. Of course you never look before you groan, roll over and slap the offending buzzing thing. It was also very confusing at night if I woke up and was wondering what time it was. In my sleepy daze I often had several moments of "Huh? *scratches head* where did my clock go?" Hopefully the summer will treat you and Jane well and you'll be able to come back to work well rested. I have no idea how actors do it, I can barely memorize my grocery list without forgetting something let alone 10 1/2 pages of script! | Wake up call!!! Written by zwild1 on 2007-06-07 19:09:45 The Mars snooze alarm, hilarious!!! Whenever My Italian Greyhound hears any noise in the house(oh,say my alarm, for instance)he runs and leaps onto the bed and prances on my chest and insists on licking my face until I wake up! This in itself is certainly enough to wake me up. There is no need for a snooze on my alarm clock. I feel your pain on the tourists though. We don't live near a beach, but my parents live on a lake that is bustling with campers, boaters and jetskiers in the summertime and the roads around the lake are loaded with slow-moving mopeds and gawking walkers...Jeesh... | Written by firefly827347 on 2007-06-07 16:10:54 Eugh, running. The ultimate torture. I laughed out loud at the image of you trying to "snooze" Mars, poor thing. Look forward to the next blog! | I just love reading your blogs D! Written by animallover on 2007-06-07 04:05:27 Thanks for sharing some of your life with us! I really like reading your blogs! You always brighten up my day which hasn't been that bright lately. I always get visual pictures when you write things. Hope you don't work to hard & find time to just relax & have fun with Jane & Mars! | Written by SeiyaTheLeaper on 2007-06-07 03:45:44 WOW, great post to read first thing in the morning. Congratulations on the two Startford Festival Awards, and of course let us know when "Design of the Dead" has a final title.... so we can start marketing! I have a lot of respect for people who go jogging... I couldn't, I'd get bored after the first 3 minutes! Poor Mars, hope you didn't "snooze him" to hard!!!! :-) And who are Lester and Maggie? | weekend??? what is that Written by Maritimechick223 on 2007-06-06 23:36:54 I know how u feel about needing weekends. I think I go to the only college in America that doesn't get out in April or May. We just started finals this week, so the previous two weeks and weekends were spent studying. Now that finals are here, the days start between 0500 and 0600 with the beginning of studying and go until at least 0000. Once finals are done, our "hiatus" is about 2 weeks. Then its back to the Maritime Academy for summer classes and full time job. Caffeine good.....Decaf bad. Especially for people with long or strange hours. I'd imagine that trying to memorize lines is almost as "fun", hard, as trying to memorize Nautical Rules of the Road, or Stability and Trim formulas. Not that you probably know what Stability and Trim is, unless you've done anything in the maritime world... Can't say as I've ever tried to "snooze" my pet before. Usually have a change in engine pitch or a wave hitting the ship to wake up too. You should bring up to the writers (not that you probably want suggestions) about doing an episode with a world that is as advanced as earth, but focus on the maritime industry....or at least tall ships | Written by #1StarGateFan on 2007-06-06 23:11:22 wow I live in Missouri glad we dont have any beaches. I plan on being a future actress/ producer, is it realy tough remembering all those lines? I have only been in a few plays with not so many lines and I got through pretty ok, I just didn't put my whole heart and soul into it because of school :P yesh yesh I am still a Sophy it stinks. Well I hope summer break for you comes on swift wings dear David lol. Good luck with filming, don't worry it will start to losen up soon.
| Written by dpainter on 2007-06-06 22:42:01 Oh, gosh, David--you're so funny! Trying to "snooze" Mars, huh? I don't imagine that would work too well. LOL Also, I must agree that running/jogging is absolute torment!!! | Your new word is: Tourons! Written by lttledvl on 2007-06-06 21:24:13 I lived in Norfolk, Virginia for several years (the city right next to Virginia Beach). I know what you mean by all the tourons, I avoided the beach like it was the plague during the summer. All those damn Canooks! (no offense) (tourons; noun; plural. a combination of the words tourist and moron. meaning; a tourist that is also a moron). | Stupid tourists indeed Written by wordplay on 2007-06-06 20:42:12 I live in Washington DC and refuse to go anywhere near the National Mall or Georgetown during the holiday months, so I feel your pain - BUT we're going to be in that part of the world later this summer, and now I have that uncomfortable feeling you get when you realize that you have become that which you loathe. Don't hate us because we're clueless! Busybusy everywhere, I think; here, things have gone off the rails because the children are in their last weeks of school and that means plays and dance recitals and international potlucks (nanaimo bars are international, right? who cares, we're going with it, and I found what I am willing to swear was the last can of custard powder in DC, so I win) and field days and god, we NEED a summer holiday just to recover from the end of the school year. Good luck getting some rest! The international food store that had the custard powder has a killer wine section, so I'm relaxing the old fashioned way. Cheers! | My town on the weekends Written by FilmStar3000 on 2007-06-06 19:43:50 Well my town were I live is no better its so poor we have no cops none, There nothing to do but read a good book if you what to go to the mall good luck its 20 miles way and the gas like $3.50 or up!!! So this weekend im staying in. | Weekends Written by San5000 on 2007-06-06 17:50:13 I live in a seaside resort town so I avoid the beach area at weekends unless the weather is not so great :-) As for weekends in general...they go too fast! | THE AMAZING AND ROMANTIC HEWLETT Written by crazy4dh on 2007-06-06 13:31:17 I love how no matter what's going on you have time to say something sweet and lovely about Jane. She is very, very lucky to have nabbed you. I hope she knows that. When you mention 25 minute runs fit into your schedule I feel 2 things. Guilt that I have trouble walking my dog and hope that shorts become part of Atlantis' uniform Get some rest and quit smacking Mars on the head. It doesn't work. My dog doesn't have a snooze button either. If I don't get up he start licking the bottom of my foot. And I am very ticklish. | Written by s_aurius on 2007-06-06 09:43:59 We all knew you were a busy man, but we now have confirmation that you do indeed sleep contrary to popular belief that you had a usb port and you just recharged that way. Running!! It's the best form of exercise IMO. Nothing like feeling like you're going to die to make you feel alive. | Just too cool. Written by allison on 2007-06-06 08:10:22 *being constantly reminded that you rock* ;D So, when is Paulie going to begin shooting for 'All My Sins...'? Written by casey on 2007-06-06 07:59:33 David, Go for a swim - it's a lot less torture on the knees and just as good cardio. I swim a couple of times a week and it's winter in Australia so if it's warm in Canada/Washington, it would just be lovely! Congrats on your promotion of the movie. I can't believe it's a LONG time before we see Season 4 of Atlantis. Hearing you talk about it makes me excited in all the upcoming stuff. I'm not working for the rest of the week and we have a public holiday next Monday so it's a LONG break for moi! Take care matey and go easy on the Nykl. | Written by kjlysen on 2007-06-05 21:22:02 Hey David! A couple things reminded me of you this last week. One was when I went to see Pirates 3... there was definitely a scene that could have come straight out of Nothing. The other was a commercial I saw a couple days ago. The guy says, "The environment in Dr. McKay's office is wonderful!" It was for a dentist, but it definitely had me choking on my soy milk for a minute. Have a good day! | I hear ya Written by Aten on 2007-06-05 21:13:57 I just got out of school this past week. Let me tell you, it's not as much of a relief as one would think. I've got college and a big move coming up (to Ohio), so my "vacation" time is scheduled. That is, other people have expectations for me. So much for R&R... Much luck with finishing the season. I know exactly what you mean about holding it together. It's one of my two great downfalls whenever I try to act. The other is line memorization, so I guess I just know what you mean all around. | Written by windshieldbug on 2007-06-05 21:06:21 I've tried to snooze my husband before. I need to buy guitar hero. | Ah ....the weekend Written by PLoker on 2007-06-05 14:11:44 I think we all have a love-hate relationship with our weekends, except if it's a long weekend. My weekends are usually spend catching up on household chores like laundry and grocery shopping. I was curious about how the concept of the weekend got started and found this little diddy on a website. Hope everyone finds it fascinating. The concept of taking time off from work is ancient. The Bible asserts that even God took it easy on the seventh day (thus compelling Him to create football). Although pre-industrial European Christians viewed Sundays solely as a time to dedicate one's self to the Deity, European workers had a longstanding practice of skipping work each "Saint Monday" to recover from the previous day's drinking. From 1793 to 1805, the French Revolutionary Calendar called for one day of leisure at the end of a 10-day week. But it wasn't until the English industrial revolution that the movement for an additional day off took hold. The American concept of the weekend has its roots in labor union attempts to accommodate Jewish workers who took Saturday instead of Sunday as their Sabbath. The first five-day work week, according to a posted extract of Rybczynski's book, was instituted by a New England spinning mill for just this reason. In 1926, Henry Ford began closing his factories on Saturdays, thinking this would help spur the economy. But it wasn't until 1940 that the two-day weekend officially began nationwide, thus paving the way for golf addiction, rummage sales, and a really happening song from the supergroup Loverboy. TGIF, everyone, TGIF. http://ask.yahoo.com/20050617.html http://ask.yahoo.com/20050617.html | Weekends are overrated Written by crazymom on 2007-06-05 13:21:54 I swear weekends wear me out more than the weekdays, although I seem to forget that about every Wednesday and start looking forward to the weekend again. Silly me! This week I'm being sane and looking forward to the WEEK, because at the weekend I have to do extra work to prepare for the annual visit of my nephew, who thinks I'm SuperAunt. The week will involve visits to the Combat Air Museum, lots of roller coasters, fishing, and many, many meals, since he eats like a typical teenager. Tuesday I'll be on a train all day--5 hours to get him, 3 hour layover, then 5 hours back--and we plan on having my laptop and my Atlantis DVDs at the ready. Between the nephew and double shifts at work the following week, I think I'll get a break about June 25th. So hang in there, David, I'm with you in spirit! We will survive! | Written by Muffin on 2007-06-05 13:02:18 Thanks for keeping us up to date David! I spent all of last weekend sick so am i need of something to cheer me up. Looks like McKay is going through it but more specifically you, which is not so good! Looking forward to seeing the new eps! Have fun with the press!
| Written by Stargate_Geek on 2007-06-05 12:50:51 Aww! Thanks for toughing through it for us, we really do love having McKay on SGA! Heh, your 'The Cape' sounds a LOT like my 'The Cape' AKA, Cape Cod. There's a reason I spend my time on weekends hiding where none of them can go! Of course, I'm gonna go be a tourist this summer... I'm such a hypocrite | Thanks for the Chat ... Written by amararti on 2007-06-05 12:45:34 ... it is much appreciated that you take the time in your hectic schedule to write a nice chatty Blog entry. Yup - weekend downtime is essential - and it sounds as if, much as you enjoy your job, you are looking forward to the summer break. But do you ever switch off? - I doubt it. Paddling on the beach with the dogs sounds like my kind of Sunday - running not so much, never could cope with running for running's sake - however combine it with some kind of ball and racket combo and that's a different story. ... McKay *heavy* episodes are a good thing, no? Relish your opportunity to shine - we shall certainly relish the opportunity to watch you when the time comes, season four sounds very exciting so far ... So another movie is in the offing ... that's great news - but don't forget to take those essential quiet moments for yourself - my thought for the day - "The trouble with life in the fast lane is that you get to the other end in an awful hurry". - so the time spent wiggling your toes in the water is very important ... You'd probably have to walk for longer than you run, though -- I usually go for at least 45 minutes, prefferably for an hour and a half (or longer!). Or I suppose you could just let Cadman take over for you ... Does Mars have the uncanny ability to know when the alarm is supposed to go off and then wake you a couple of minutes before? Crossing at the Gananoqua border is not bad crossing into New York state from Canada is smooth sailing. I do know that crossing at Niagara Falls is a long wait all the time. Funny story family and I were in Saskatchewan and we were driving in the southern part and here we were driving and then we saw it right after North Portal along Canada/USA Border the sign saying welcome to North Dakota. Funny part was there was no border guards or duty free it was just a road and there you are in North Dakota Last time I smacked my snooze button I ended up having to get a new clock radio I smacked it and sent the thing to the floor. | Written by Shawna on 2007-06-05 06:15:23 Most of the times I've crossed the border, it's only been a few minutes, especially crossing north, so I was quite surprised a few months ago when it took me over an hour to get INTO Canada. You know, you've inspired me. If I get a job in Vancouver (which I hope to do; that's where they seem to keep most of the good shows, after all, and by "good" read "sci-fi"), I think I'd like to live in Washington, even with the commute. I'm thinking maybe Blaine. Cute little town, nice views, and evidently about half the population is packing heat due to being border patrol, law enforcement, etc. so it's got to be fairly safe...I'd guess, anyway. Regarding the snooze, I always have the best intentions of getting up when my alarm goes off, but always seem to insist on just a bit more sleep once it actually does. Of course, my alarm is my cell phone, placed on the other side of the room, so "hitting snooze" for me entails getting up, walking over there, flipping it open, hitting "end", then going through the process of resetting it. Then I get right back in bed and go right back to sleep. I've even got it set with a audio clip from Pirates 2, where Jack Sparrow is yelling at the crew like a madman, because I tend to sleep through music. It tends to annoy the heck out of anyone else within hearing distance. Oy. Sorry, I ramble. | Thanks... Written by Amy_McKay on 2007-06-05 06:00:39 Such a long blog!!! They're just messing with you, right? I did detect a bit of glee in Joe Mallozzi's blog when he spoke of this episode. Now I know it's because they get to torture the cast and crew with it. He's evil that way. (But still hilarious.) And talk about evil. Running? Ick! Take extra care of yourself between now and the summer break. Written by watcher652 on 2007-06-05 03:06:16 Did Nykl mangle his lines or not? Didn't quite understand that bit. And hey, who says Nykl isn't as lovely as that female replicator? We shall have to see about that! Hooray for the return of Mitch Pileggi! Are you serious about having him in your next movie? That will be so cool! Given the tentative title, will a hideous fuzzy bat-eared creature make an appearance? Thanks for the teeny spoilers, we live for this stuff! Have fun at the photo shoot. Will Mars be attending? | Written by sistine_spy on 2007-06-05 02:20:28 LOL, it was a beautiful weekend up here in the Northwest wasn't it...too bad I spent most of it inside painting our house's interior. Before he became all crazy famous (about 10-15 years ago) Bill Engvall had this great skit about his little boy coming in and puking on him and his wife in the middle of the night. He says they should make an alarm clock that sounds like a child throwing up cause "there is no snooze alarm. You here that noise and you're like, 'I'M UP, I'M UP, is it on me, is it on me?' You'd end up showing up to work in your underwear, 'what are you looking at Bob, there's no vomit on me today.'" LOL, I think it's true, it would wake anyone up, even whoever said that they have to put the alarm clock across the room from them... Cheers, Dani | Snooze buttons are evil. Written by Dew on 2007-06-05 02:08:50 I kept hitting mine this morning so hard I hurt my hand. At least you weren't that mean to poor Mars. Hope you made it up to him! And I totally misread the part about your legs...I read it as "jello legs" and was laughing as I reread it properly. Works either way from what it sounds like. Crazy runner. And switching to decaf is just wrong wrong wrong! | Written by dgustavson on 2007-06-05 01:19:22 Press junket? Hey, why wasn't I invited? ;-) Have fun and try not to give those journalist-types a hard time...okay, too hard of a time. -d | Written by MdGateFan on 2007-06-05 01:15:49 10 1/2 pages... ouch, that sounds like a lot of work. I know what you mean about the tourists. I try to avoid most of the touristy areas of another Washington (Washington, DC that is) during the spring (when school kids from all over come for a week of sightseeing) and the summer when the rest of the tourists descend. That said, I recently western Washington state and I can understand why people would want to be there. It is truly beautiful and from what I hear, one actually sees the sun during the summer. Hope this week is a bit easier for you...even if that would mean less McKay for us. | Nykl hating- why? Written by cinderlily on 2007-06-05 01:06:29 Why all the Nykl hating? Is it a need for David superiority? We all love you both, so play nice with the Czech, capiche? Also, just to let you know, running? You are a wee bit crazier than I thought. Why run when you can take the tram, I say! Liz (who only sounds partially lazy.) | Written by darklock on 2007-06-05 00:54:06 Mitch Pileggi is an amazing actor. Thank-you for the inside bits regarding him. He sounds like a fun guy. Cheers! | Written by GentleZephyr on 2007-06-05 00:47:16 To stop my partner and I submitting to the lure of the "Snooze Button", our alarm sits on a chest of drawers on the other side of the bedroom. This morning, we were woken as usual and were on the verge of leaping out of bed, when my cat jumped up and (accidently)landed on the Snooze Button. We just looked at each other and took it as an omen. Oh what a joy, the next 5 minutes were! | Snooze Written by amyfo on 2007-06-05 00:21:28 Wouldn't it be great if pets did have snooze buttons? At least for the weekends. "Five more minutes and then I'll feed you, I promise." | Time flies Written by Becky S. on 2007-06-05 00:17:54 The weekend did go far too fast. It feels like this whole year has been going by pretty darn fast. Or am I the only one who feels like that. Sorry you had such a rough Friday. Hope the rest of the week goes much better for you. | Decaf?!?!?! Written by James on 2007-06-05 00:11:30 I gave up coffee last week and went completely over to expresso. I figured why go half way? | Weekend? When? Written by lemonchicken on 2007-06-05 00:00:00 I think there was a rip in time this weekend - mine went by so fast, too fast. At least the weather was good for you! And, a 10 1/2 pages? How do you manage? Wow... And the not being able to feel your legs - couldnt help but immediately think of "Duet". You really ARE like McKay. *smirks* | Who are Lester and Maggie Written by taywolf on 2007-06-04 23:59:11 I have seen the names of these hounds in the site before but am not sure who's dogs they are.
